Hilton Avisford Park, Arundel

Advantages: Superb location. Comfortable, relaxing hotel, steeped in history. Superb staff.
Disadvantages: Loud Christmas parties tended to conflict with the country hotel ethos!

...We have just returned from a two-night stay at the (correctly-named) Avisford Park Hilton near Arundel on the south coast of England. Described by Hilton themselves as an hotel where ?You can live like a Baronet. After all, it was once the home of Baronet Montagu, Admiral and friend of Lord Nelson. The jewel of the South Downs

Advantages: Historical town with many attractions nestling in the midst of the South Downs.
Disadvantages: Over run with tourists in the summer. Half the major attractions shut in winter.

...Arundel (pronounced ARR-n-dl (arrow), not AIR) is a small town situated in the heart of the rolling South Downs in West Sussex. If you're ever in that part of world, it's well worth spending at least half a day there, if not longer. It's a very pretty and historical town, which is dominated by the twin edifices of the Norman castle and the Gothic cathedral at the top of the hill, and the River Arun running along the bottom. The skyline does make a particularly dramatic vista if you approach it from the bottom of the hill near the river. My association with the town probably starts from well before I can remember. The Town House is a Tiny Treasure

Advantages: Lovely rooms, great smellies
Disadvantages: I didn't get to try the restaurant - maybe next time!

...I've never been to Arundel before which is a bit of a shame as it seems to be a lovely little town although I'd have to admit it seems a bit over-supplied with antique shops and speciality little stores selling things you don't need, like a whole shop just selling walking sticks for example. I nearly didn't stay at the Town House and visit Arundel at all due to a bit of a 'cock-up on the communication front' with the lady who was helping to book me a room. She told me that the Town House wouldn't take a booking unless I told them when I was going to arrive and I got in a bit of a snit, fuming "It's not a bloody dentist, why do I need an appointment?" ...My partner booked this hotel for 2 mid-week nights as a surprise treat for my birthday, she chose this location as it was near-by to the very beautiful Arundel and selected the Hilton as we had never stayed at one before but believed their name to be synomonous with "excellence". On first arriving our impressions were of a lovely old building that had retained all its original features, set in extensive well-maintained grounds (although most of it seemed to be a golf course) with sufficient parking for all. Advantages: Stunningly colourful flower display. Great free attraction. Historic origins.
Disadvantages: Can be crowded during the day. Two days and it's all swept away!

...I was brought up never to discuss two things: politics and religion. This review does not set out to be any religious discussion whatsoever, I honestly feel that such is the spectacle of the Carpet of Flowers in Arundel, one's religion or lack thereof really does not come into it. However, the flowers are there to celebrate a "feast" in the religious calendar and therefore their very being does require certain explanation and qualification. For those of you who do not know Arundel, it is the cathedral town (it really is not big enough to be a city!) of the Arundel and Brighton Catholic diocese. Late weekend break at Arundel Fontwell Travelodge

Advantages: Very good value for money for a family with children
Disadvantages: With no car, one needs to keep in mind the lack of buses on a Sunday!

...At the start of the school summer holidays, I researched late 1-night breaks in the countryside for my family, and quickly discovered hotel stays for families when late-booked could be horrendously expensive. Eventually, I conceded that the cheapest available booking I could find for us was a Travelodge hotel near Arundel. As a non-car driver/owner, and with a couple of family members travelling with me, I was rather nervous about how we would manage to get to a car-owner's hotel, presumably near a motorway. However, it worked really well, and the weather kept reasonably fair, only raining a few minutes from time to time. Advantages: Close to City Centre and overlooks River Cam
Disadvantages: Rooms need the same treatment the communal areas have had.

...Arundel House Hotel is on Chesterton Road, directly overlooking the River Cam and only a 5 minute walk from Cambridge City Centre. It has been developed from a row of terraced houses and whilst this doesn't take away from it as a whole it does affect the setting out of the interior of the hotel - mainly corridors, rooms and bathrooms. I live in Cambridge and had never stayed here before but a friend booked a room for a night away as an anniversary present for my husband and I. The hotel is very clean and stylish but the rooms do not match the quality of the rest of the hotel. The restaurant, bar and conservatory areas are clean, smart, reasonably stylish (depending on your taste!) and comfortable but the room failed to live up to my expectation for a hotel in a prime location with communal areas to such high standards. Advantages: An extremely enjoyable costume drama.
Disadvantages: None

...a fan of costume drama then this is most definitely one film to add to your list. The wardrobe department must have worked overtime to produce such spectacular outfits. Young Victoria is as pretty as a picture, she is seen in many different gowns during the course of the film all of which are elaborate and beautiful. As we are taken on the journey with Victoria we are treated to some spectacular cinematography, there were many locations used during the filming. Westminster Abbey was in fact Lincoln Cathedral, Wilton House in Salisbury, a few scenes were shot at Blenheim Palace, then Arundel Castle in Sussex and Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire were both used.
