...sda is one of those supermarkets which has a really bad reputation, in the past this has been justified, but asda is currently going through something of a re-invention of late. In 1999, Asda was bought by the american chain store giant Wal-Mart. For me, this is when things started to go downhill. The quality of the goods and even the stores in general began to plummet. I stopped shopping there and took my business to Tesco or occassionally Sainsbury's. In late 2007 I moved house and realised that my closest supermarket was now an asda (well, morrisons was closer but I strongly dislike shopping there) and so decided that it was time that I gave them another chance. Ok, so their stores are not as well organised or as snazzy as Tesco or Sainsbury's but they are clean and tidy so thats good enough for me. The staff are also not as...

...Asda is my main supermarket, being only a 15 minute walk away from my home . There is a Sainsburys nearer, but I don't find them as competitive for price, so Asda it is . The store I am concentrating on in this review is located on Front Street, Arnold, Nottingham The first thing you're going to be wanting to know is how to get there . Now, I'm pretty sure you're not going to be coming from far and wide if you're visiting my local shop , but it can be accessed via several main bus routes from Nottingham City Centre, as well as from Carlton, Calverton, Gedling and Mapperly . If you prefer to walk, it's within reachable distance from Redhill, Daybrook, and Bestwood. ...I've been shopping in Asda for as long as I can remember. Although there is a number of shops near me, such as Tescos, a local Co-op and a Somerfield, I always seem to find myself drawn back to the big green giant. When I was younger, Asda seemed to have the brand of cheap and cheerful. It was were you went when you were running low on money to shop, with other supermarkets such as Tescos and Safeways seeming to me (in my younger eyes) more up market. However, either it was me being idiotic or Asda having reinvented its image, but I now find Asda being my supermarket of choice (or perhaps it's the third option and I am cheap!) ASDA, THE ONLY TRUE ONE STOP SHOP?

Advantages: Vast Range of Products. Value For Money. Some Stunning (Non-Food) Bargains. George Clothes. Fewer "Trick" Offers.
Disadvantages: Dodgy Trolleys. Huge Check Out Queues.

...WHO ARE THEY? In the simplest of terms, ASDA is a nationwide "superstore" chain. My definition of the word "superstore" is as primarily a grocery store, with ancillary departments - clothes, electricals etc, rather like those in a department store. To fully qualify as a superstore in 2006, they will also have to retail petrol. In short a one stop shop if you like. ASDA - Associated Northern Dairies, a good old homespun north of England company yes? Well once upon a time, maybe. Now for some years part of the gigantic American Wal-Mart chain which, in the US at least, exercises colossal buying power and is able to control many sectors of the economy. ASDA

Advantages: Most of what you need under one roof
Disadvantages: Owned by Walmart! Poor offers compared to competitors.

...Financially, people are finding times hard. More now than ever. Is ASDA helping? Not really. ASDA have always stayed away from traditional offers, in favour of 'rollbacks' Low prices always... but they aren't. They are still offers! and that price will go back up after a few weeks. So is 20p of an item that costs over a pound as good value as its competitors buy one get one free's? Hardly. I've noticed lately that they have started putting up the cost of items dramatically for a couple of weeks, so that they can then 'roll back' the price 20p or so, to a price that was ABOVE what it was origionally. That takes care of their Grocery department. A thumbs down! But the benefit of ASDA is that unlike other supermarkets they have more to offer than just grocerys. The asda experience

Advantages: good value for money, very good offers such as buy one get one free's.
Disadvantages: long queues, very busy, some rude staff

...I used to believe that asda was the best value supermarket...until one was built in my hometown of Folkestone. Don't get me wrong, most things in asda are fantastic value for money, and they have a large variety of offers every day instore. As a student, I spent hours browsing the isles and picking up bargains. It was cheap, convenient, sold practically everything and opened nearly all hours. However, the company has now shortened its opening hours (quite inconvenient because I tend to work evening - early morning shifts at work, and sometimes get hungry or thirsty after), and the queues are quite ridiculous. Overall though, the price and the offers are worth fighting off a stampede of shoppers all fighting over the reduced section on a Sunday afternoon....

It Asda Be Asda For Me

The Entrance *************** The entrance to my store can get quite hectic in the busy periods of the day, especially rush hour, that's a killer. The reason for this is a badly placed roundabout with too much traffic volume for the width of the road. They really could do with adding another lane to stop the backlog this causes. Car Park ************* The carpark to my store is massive, but believe me I have seen it full up at peak times. There are great disabled parking facilities, situated closest to the stores entrance for ease of access. The spaces even talk to you when you park in them to warn you that this is a disabled facility only. There is also ample parent and baby parking...

Asda "Why Pay More"

Advantages: Local, Good customer service, reasonable prices.
Disadvantages: No Cafe, Small toilet facilities.

...Asda is our main 'walmart'/ supermarket that we shop at once a month. Our weekly 'top up's are usually done in supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Aldi Lidl etc...so I can compare Asda to a few of the other main ones in my review. Asda is part of the 'Walmart' family, which is bascially a chain of discount stores worldwide. 'ASDA' is actually as aquisition of the names 'ASquith' and 'DAiry' because Asda was formed by a guy called Peter Asquith, who owned a Butchery and sought a company called 'Associated Dairies' to take over. It is reknown for it's discount prices, both as a grocery supermarket and also in its own branded clothes section called 'George'. ******** Store info********* Asda is open from 8am till 10pm on weekdays/ saturday and 10am till 4pm on Sundays.
