Eyam village in Derbyshire

Advantages: Scenic and relaxing
Disadvantages: too many new houses being built

...The small village of Eyam, (pronounced Eem) in Derbyshire, is a picturesque pplace with such an historical story to tell. Brief history, which entices the many tourist to the village??. It is best known for it's residents heroic act in 1665 when the plague, (black death) took hold. The plague hit the village in in August of 1665 contained in flea infested materials delivered to the local tailor, George Vicar, from London, he died with-in the week. When the towns people realised what was happening they were advised by the rector, Reverend William Mompesson to quarantine the village thus stopping the infection spreading. The villagers used many precautions, such as burying there own dead, not allowing visitors into the village and having goods dropped off at certain points on the village borders. In all over 250 villagers died...

Stainsby Mill, Derbyshire

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

...Stainsby Mill enjoys a location within the idyllic setting of the small village of Doe Lea in North Derbyshire. It's very close to junction 29 of the M1 motorway but with its rural location you could be easy to think that you were miles away from anyway. This is a rare example of a 19th century water powered flour mill. It is now owned and managed by The National Trust but what makes this place especially unusual is that it is still in everyday use and the end product of bags of flour are still commercially sold. I had previously visited Caudwell's Mill in Rowsley, Derbyshire which is about twenty miles from here and I was expecting to find quite a few similarities. Both of these flour mills are still operated by a water wheel, they both still produce flour but the similarities seem to end there. Whilst Caudwell's Mill uses...

The Derwent Valley, Derbyshire

Advantages: A Great Day Out
Disadvantages: Lots Of Enviromental Damage Was Caused During Its Creation

...the Derbyshire Pennines, along with the A628 "Woodhead Pass" and the M62 Motorway. The A57 is generally the first major Road in Derbyshire that is blocked with Snow during the Winter so if you are planning to visit this area during the Winter Months be warned. Ladybower Reservoir lies 12 miles to the West of Sheffield and about double that distance to the East from Manchester. As you approach from the Sheffield side there is a Bridge that carries the A57 Road over the bottom arm of Ladybower Reservoir and immediately after this Bridge there are usually many Cars parked on the grass verge. This is the point where the Derwent Valley begins and there is a narrow Road which turns right here which will take you a further couple of miles or so along the Western edge of Derwent Reservoir to a large Car parking area and Visitors Centre called...

Ashbourne Court Hotel

Advantages: Prime location, bargin price
Disadvantages: Cheap fixture and fittings

...Needed somewhere on short notice for a wedding in the Ashbourne region and this hotle fitted the bill perfectly. It is ideally situated on the main street, which makes finding it easy. Checked in quite late, but still found the staff to be pleasent. Booked a double room plus breakfast for two for only 80 euros. The rooms where very spacious and included a king size bed and the usual hotel extras. Fixture and fittings where perhaps a little on the cheap side, and the lack of corridor lighting made finding your room a bit of an adventure! The breakfast was served in a nicely decorated room the following morning - good selection of hot and cold foods - fresh juices would have been nice though. Overall, a pleasent stay in a nice hotel - and a bargin too....

Just one little gem in Derbyshire

Advantages: Beauty, peace and tranquility
Disadvantages: none

...I live not to far form the Derbyshire border and quite often visit some of the picturesque villages that frequent the beautiful place that lies within. Every time I visit one of the villages?places like Eyam (pronounced Eem? see my review, plug?plug?), Stoney Middleton and Castleton, famous for its Blue John?I am always amazed by the stunning scenery and the total peace and tranquillity of my surroundings? However, this review is about the beautiful little village called Edale?. ** WHERE IS IT?? Edale is a small village in Derbyshire, just off the A6187?overlooked by the beautiful Mam Tor, Lose Hill and Kinder Scout, with many little Hamlets around its edge, such as Barber Booth and Ollerbrook Booth. Apart form the beautiful scenic route into the village by car there is also an excellent train service which runs from either...

The Anglers Rest, Derbyshire

Advantages: Good Sunday Lunch, Nice Pub And Lovely Setting
Disadvantages: Food Is Quite Expensive

...The Angler?s Rest is one of three Public Houses/Restaurants in the little picturesque Village of Bamford, in an area of Derbyshire?s Peak District National Park known as the High Peak. I visited the Angler?s Rest in Bamford recently for Sunday Lunch, although I must confess that this was not actually my first choice of venue. I had intended to visit a place called the Yorkshire Bridge, which is a popular place and has a good reputation for food. In fact, the Yorkshire Bridge was so popular that we could not find an empty table, hence we headed back up the road about a mile to the Angler?s Rest. I have eaten at the Angler?s Rest before but this was many years ago. Back then this place served excellent food but I had heard that its standards had fallen since that time. I had however heard that this place had recently changed owners...

Orgies in the Derbyshire Countryside!

Advantages: A magnificent building in a great setting.
Disadvantages: Good weather needed to get the best from a visit.

...A while ago I produced a review about the town of Bolsover in Derbyshire. In it I mentioned the lovely castle that sits on the hill overlooking the Vale of Scarsdale and the surrounding Derbyshire countryside. We don't visit as often as we should, but I very lucky in that I get to help out at events (the most recent being the Derbyshire Food & Drink Fair), gaining me free entry to the grounds and castle. ~~~HOW TO GET THERE. We usually go to the castle from where we live in Chesterfield. Our normal methods of transport are either a shared taxi (costs about £8.00 from the town centre) or by bus (numbers 81 to 83 drop off at the centre of town and its not far to walk to the castle). There is a train station around six miles away (also in Chesterfield) and then you need to walk into the centre to get the bus to Bolsover. If...

The Mackworth Hotel, Derbyshire

Advantages: Great location, warm and friendly
Disadvantages: May be out of budget, hotel rooms not suitable for disabled guests

...The Mackworth hotel is a converted and extended farmhouse situated on the edge of the medieval village of Mackworth, Derbyshire. It lies just 2 miles out of Derby City Centre with close links to the M1/M6/A38/A50. We chose this as our wedding venue in the October of 2006, after visiting the Hotel for several meals and evenings out previously. As well as being fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, the hotel boasts extensive conferencing facilities, restaurant and bar areas. The restaurant boasts a superb carvery with a varied choice of meat and veg for a reasonable price as well as many alternatives on the menu. The hotel is surrounded by picturesque Derbyshire Countryside visible from the restaurant open plan extension. The hotel itself has welcoming decor styled on rustic farmhouse with the main entrance to the side...
