Travelodge Ashford : Good Value

Advantages: Good travel links, good location
Disadvantages: Rooms could have done with updating

...I stayed at this hotel for two nights either side of a trip to France in October 2008 and found it to be a decent hotel for the purpose of our trip. We had stayed at a Premier Inn the previous year and didn't particularly like it, so based on a previous stay with Travelodge we decided to book with them. I had done some research and the hotel itself was located on a leisure park just off the motorway. It has a Little Chef, KFC, Frankie & Benny's and Pizza Hut for food and a cinema, health and fitness club and a couple of nightclubs for entertainment. I liked the idea of staying somewhere where there was several choices for food within walking distance, which was not too far from the ferry port at Dover. We arrived at about 7pm when there was quite a lot of activity, people coming in and out, but we were checked in quite quickly...

Ashford

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...Well ; heres my opinion of the place they call " Ashford " ; I mean - it's not too important... it's only where I call home... ;-) Now you see the slang on the street these days people call it " Trashford " and all the rest but it aint a bad place to be actually... let me explain why... The Good Points The Town Center The town center is good place to generally hang out as it is rather a large place with a good selection of shops including Blockbuster and Electroniques Boutique (my favs) It also hosts a place which is sheltered called " Community Square " with shops inside there - pretty cool. The Mcarthur Glenn place Iv only been once and I can honestly say it really didnt appeal to me - far too many fshion shops for my liking - nice big structure though and a place to hang out and meet people I suppose... although...

Ashford Town FC

Advantages: Friendly atmosphere. Nice stadium. Great FA cup tradition
Disadvantages: Financial problems.

...There are two soccer clubs that mean a lot to me: one is Liverpool my favourite Premier League side and the other is Ashford Town FC my home town team, and the subject of this review. Ashford Town FC was founded in 1930 and there have been semi-professional teams in the town since the 19 th century under various names including Ashford United and Ashford Railway Works.Pre World War II Ashford Town played in the Kent League and enjoyed a modicum of success including a FA Cup tie against Clapton Orient, now known as Leyton Orient. In the post war period they were in the Kent League until 1969 and won several trophies including the Kent League championship in 1949-49. They joined the Southern League in 1959 and won promotion several times to the Premier League where they played teams such as Cheltenham, Wimbledon...

Ashford in the Water in the Peak District

Advantages: Historic, Picturesque, Charming
Disadvantages: Lot a lot of modern amenities

...different. One recent discovery is an inscription on a piece of stone above the bridge near the Village Cricket Ground. This inscription reads "M Hyde 1664." This is apparently a monument to a well known local man who was blown off his Horse here and drowned in the River in that year. I would like to think that the modern Village that we see today has changed little over the centuries. Today, there is a small General Stores, two Public Houses, and a Post Office but little else in the way of modern amenities. If you are looking for refreshments then you can either try the Ashford Arms Hotel or the Bull's Head. Both of these places serve food although I have never eaten at either. The Ashford Arms Hotel has the better reputation for food however. Since Ashford in the Water is only a 30 minute journey from I live I visit here regularly...

***Beggars Can't be Choosers***

Advantages: good value
Disadvantages: hate the people!!

...When I am in the motherland of Tenterden, Kent, the pub that I nearly always end up in is the County Hotel, in Ashford. That doesn't make too much sense, as it's a good 15 miles away from where I live, but because my school was in Ashford, most of my friends are too, and so I have drive all the way over there to meet them. The County is a Wetherspoon's pub, and apparently hotel, although I am pretty much stumped about the features of the hotel, seeing as I have never noticed any suitcase-bearing revellers in their, or in fact any stairs to the rooms. It is a mystery to my friends and I. I feel like booking in just to see where these magical rooms are! Or maybe its just a name? Anyway, from here on in, I will telling you about the pub and restaurant facilities only. Anyway, Wetherspoon's are a countrywide chain of public houses...

Sleep ol' Ashford.

Advantages: Quiet and sleepy town.
Disadvantages: Boring usually!

...Okay so lets begin with the roots of Ashford. Some people believe the towns real origin lies in the ninth century when it was invaded by the Danes a number of people settled on land what is now known as Ashford. Ashford was owned by many important people and arguments were normally started as to who owned what part. Ashford has a fantastic railway line which was built in 1872 and doubled Ashford's population from 3,000 to 7,000! On to Ashford recently.... Ashford has increased its population by a staggering amount. I believe this is because of the transport links and the new developments e.g pubs, clubs, transport and obviously apartments. Ashford has been majorly cleaned up and is looking really attractive! It is open to many schools including Ashford School which is a private school and costs thousands to send your child...

Ashford-Changing Fast

Advantages: Superb location. Great rail links. Fast growing
Disadvantages: Lacks architectural distinction.

...which has already housed several major meets including England B versus France B and one of the largest cineplexes in South East England. The town has a number of major hotels and has a dedicated sports centre called the Stour Centre. There are several one stop shopping centres such as County Square and Ashford is now one of the finest shopping centres in Kent. I would not wish to exaggerate the virtues of the town, there are certainly places of much greater architectural quality, but it is a good base for exploring the highly attractive countryside nearby....

Great - But Don't Holiday In Ashford!

Advantages: Location - if you're using the Eurostar
Disadvantages: Location - if you aren't using the Eurostar.

...Regular readers - and I love you all to bits - will no doubt once again raise their eyebrows Heavenwards in supplication one more time when they read that I've just stayed in a hotel in Ashford, Kent. This time, however successfully I have managed to root out an undesirable holiday location - and, believe me, it is - there was method in my madness. It may be a convenient conference location, but there are certainly better centres from which to explore Kent, the "Garden of England". Try Canterbury, for example. It's where I live and it's less than 20 miles from Ashford. So why, exactly, did I do it? Baby Josh and I decided that Amanda needed a weekend away (?Mothering Sunday? was looming) and we arranged a short break in Brussels. The best way to get to Brussels from the South East of the UK is by Eurostar, without a shadow of doubt...

Review of Holiday Inn (Ashford Central)

A Nasty Experience

Advantages: The main building is beautiful.
Disadvantages: Rooms, furnishing, being stolen from and especially the service

...Booked to stay at The Croft over the phone, giving them my debit card details. When we arrived at the hotel we were given a family room priced at £88. The room was disgusting. It was in a nasty little portacabin style out-building behind the main hotel, and the furniture inside looked like it had come out of a skip behind an old folks home. It was scuffed, threadbare and they style would have been out of date by the 1970's. It was ancient, so I've no idea how it would meet 1988 fire regulations. So with my wife being 9 months pregnant we decided to leave to go somewhere cheaper and nicer. We told the receptionist that we were leaving, because the room was not up to standard and inquired about the cancellation fee. She told us there was none, so we left. 2 hours later the manager phones to tell us there is a fee of £20. We...
