"Ashington's me home 'nd ah like it!"
Advantages: Its home, good museum, some good shops
Disadvantages: Not very exciting
...~ Where is it? ~
Ashington is located in Northumberland, North East England. It is about 15 miles north of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I was born in Ashington and have lived here all my life and although its not the most exciting place on the planet, I do quite like it.
~ History ~
Once upon a time there lived a sleepy hamlet, called Ashington, with only a few houses and farms. Not many people lived here so it wasn't very well known. That is until coal was discovered in the early 19th Century. Ashington then grew to a large coal-mining village and was once known as "The largest Mining Village in the World".
Despite this historic claim, there are no remaining collieries in Ashington. Lots of the people that live here now though have links to the collieries. For example, my granddad worked as a physiotherapist in the medical centre...

Run of the Mill? A bit disappointing
Advantages: Nice room
Disadvantages: Nasty food
...I stayed at the Mill House recently and was simultaneously impressed and depressed by what I found. I liked my room, which was exceptionally pretty and I liked the setting but the food was poor, the service 'patchy' and the public areas just a bit too much like a 1980s country pub with no customers.
Location
The hotel is in the tiny village of Ashington, about ten miles north of Worthing and just off the A24. If you don't know it's there, you'll struggle to find it as it's located down a pot-holed track off a poorly sign-posted side-road to the dual carriageway. Luckily someone led me to the right road as I think it would have been very easy to miss.
First Impressions
First impressions were that it looked very pretty, rural and twee but on closer inspection the rather verdant gardens were a bit too overgrown - beyond...

Old King Coal
Advantages: Nostalgia
Disadvantages: Not a one
...Ashington, “The Largest Pit Village in the World”. For many years this was the proud boast of this North East community. This is the place where you could shout down a mine, and a world-class footballer would emerge. Who has not heard of Jack and Bobbie Charlton? Ask any Newcastle United supporter who was the best player they ever had, and the vast majority of the older supporters will answer with one voice. Jackie Milburn from Ashington. He led the “toon” on their unstoppable crusade in the early 1950’s and his statue now takes pride of place outside the Newcastle United ground at St. James’s Park and in the centre of Ashington shopping centre.
Within a radius of 5 miles from the centre of Ashington, there used to be 30 collieries or pits. Ashington was the largest, employing nearly 4,000 men...

The History of the Mines in Northumberland
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...~ History of Ashington and of the Museum ~
Ashington is a town in North-east England. It has a population of approximately 28,000, which grew from a few farms in the early 19th Century to a large Coal mining village once coal was discovered. Ashington was once known as "The largest mining village in the world" but despite this historic claim, Ashington has no remaining deep mines. Woodhorn Colliery lies in South-east Northumberland close to the town of Ashington. It was a working pit for more than 80 years, from 1894 until it closed in 1981.
Woodhorn Colliery Museum, first opened in 1989, is the only coal mining museum in Northumberland. Part of the museum is housed in some of the original colliery buildings. It has been closed to visitors for over two years while developments were taking place but it reopened in October 2006. I...

I DECIDED TO STAY BUT HERE IS THE OP ANYWAY
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...As of this point forward I have decided to stay so this op is not relevant but you can read my rantings anyway.
------------------------------------------------------
I am afraid to say that the title sums up my existence on Ciao as of an 20th April jimoth shall be no more.
I have several reasons for leaving that I will explain a little later on; this isn?t going to be anything special, just a bit about Ciao and me.
This is only short as time is to short for long goodbyes.
Beg at my knees all you like I am leaving so that is that.
In true jimoth fashion (and for the final time) I will title each section as I go. Be aware this op is quite cheesy at times.
~ Who am I ~
Born: 11th August 1983
The Place: Ashington, Northumberland
The Time: Don?t know but it was very early in the morning, say 2 am.
I...

Brotherly love?
Advantages: Comprehensive, well-written and even-handed biography
Disadvantages: Lack of direct input from book's subjects means that some things could be taken for granted
...Giles and many other alumni of the great footballing schools at Old Trafford and Elland Road crop up with regularity throughout the 450-odd pages of this gripping work. Positive and negative opinions reflect the sometimes contrary nature of both brothers (Jack in particular!) but most of the comments are tinged with respect and admiration for what they have achieved, even if you get the feeling that the way they went about things, as players and managers, sometimes left a little to be desired.
This is not just a book about the football side of things though, and McKinstry has stuck to a simple formula throughout the book ? the early chapters deal with the Charltons? childhood in the north-eastern mining community of Ashington, and how this upbringing in a fiercely loyal and resilient working-class community played such a pivotal role in...

My 2009
Advantages: :)
Disadvantages: :(
...had fun days baking cakes and visiting parks with my other nephew and niece.
I had another makeover in August, this time with my big sister, Joanne. It was a great day and we got lots of fab photos, including a photo frame with photos in for our parents for Christmas (which they really liked). It was quite expensive for all the photos and the frame but we have intended doing something like this since my 18th birthday and I?m 21 next year, and we both think it was well worth the money.
I went to Spain for a week with my parents, which was really nice. I also went for another weekend in Milton Keynes to see Rachael and celebrate passing my second year at university.
I went to stay in Durham with my friend from university for a night and she came and stayed in Ashington for a night. We had lots of fun on both occassions :D
It...

The Town House is a Tiny Treasure
Advantages: Lovely rooms, great smellies
Disadvantages: I didn't get to try the restaurant - maybe next time!
...I've never been to Arundel before which is a bit of a shame as it seems to be a lovely little town although I'd have to admit it seems a bit over-supplied with antique shops and speciality little stores selling things you don't need, like a whole shop just selling walking sticks for example.
I nearly didn't stay at the Town House and visit Arundel at all due to a bit of a 'cock-up on the communication front' with the lady who was helping to book me a room. She told me that the Town House wouldn't take a booking unless I told them when I was going to arrive and I got in a bit of a snit, fuming "It's not a bloody dentist, why do I need an appointment?" Exasperated, I told her to tell the hotel to take a hike and asked her to book me somewhere else (in fact the awful Mill House in Ashington). Only after she told me that the Mill was...
