"Good afternoon and Welcome to Laura Ashley!"

Advantages: A product you can discuss for hours and look at for days
Disadvantages: Not very competitive rates of pay

...Having worked for a variety of retailers over the past ten years- ranging from a well-known supermarket to a local small business- I have experienced both good employers and those to avoid. Laura Ashley Limited sits nicely in the middle, often reaching towards the "Places I Loved to Work" category. I have been with the company for just over a year. In this time, I have been promoted from Sales Leader (supervisor) to Assistant Manager. When promotion opportunities arrive, which is quite rarely in certain areas, I have to admit, the managers are more than happy to promote within, in order to keep the knowledge gained during training. I can understand that this is a negative idea to some, but from an insider's perspective, it worked well for me! Initially, the product knowledge required to work at Laura Ashley can be overwhelming. When...

LAURA ASHLEY Design Service

Advantages: Easier to choose at home, advice from designer
Disadvantages: None

...I have been looking for a new sofa for months now, to no avail. Finally, I found a few I liked in Laura Ashley, at my local Homebase in Ayr. I spotted that they did an interior design service, and I thought this would be a good way of trying to create the room I wanted, with all the little touches and the desired ambience. So I decided that I would ask them to come out to my home. Their design service is £50, and this covers you for up to three rooms. You do get the £50 back if you place an order with them, and I therefore figured this was a reasonable deal. I called the number shown on the leaflet and they gave me a local number to ring and make an appointment. For larger projects, i.e., more than three rooms, there is a £100 charge, again fully refundable against a purchase. I rang my local number (Glasgow) and I made...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Laura Ashley telephone order

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: lack of customer care and none delivery

...Never ever would I have ordered from Laura Ashley if I had known about their shocking customer service. I only wanted an 11 metre length of fabric so I ordered on 28th october and money was taken from my account. Today is 21st of november and I am still waiting. I have been on the phone 3 times and sent 3 e mails and each reply says 7 to 10 days. Now I hear that they have 1000 metres in stock but the warehouse is in a mess so guess what, delivery is likely to be in 10 days (NOT). I have had enough and have asked my bank to follow the dispute procedure to get my money back. The fabrics are nice but the stress is not worth the effort. Look somewhere else and avoid Laura Ashley. I wish I had known about their dreadful lack of delivery beforehand and I hope someone else benefits from my experience...

Laura Ashley

Advantages: Original, Quality
Disadvantages: None

...I've been purchasing from Laura Ashley for many years now, and I just love it! You could totally re-decorate your home from paint right through to finishing touches. Their ranges include paint, furniture, soft furnishings, light, material, crockery, accessories and clothes... I could go on. There is a very distinctive country look but saying this, a lot of the designs would fit into any home. I've found everything I have bought, (and that is a lot) has been of excellent quality though you may pay a little more than average for this which can only be expected. I've brought material by the metre to make my own curtains (I have a Laura Ashley curtain making book) which is good for people on a tight budget but they also provide made to measure services from the same materials which I think makes style accessible for everyone...

Martha Leave Frank, Daniel and Laurence

Advantages: some funny scenes and a great Ray Winstone cameo
Disadvantages: the central characters are far too shallow

...in the UK, this may have something to do with the fact that he reserves her a room at a top hotel. Martha, having met Daniel, goes onto meet Laurence (Joseph Fiennes) at the airport, they hit it off also (funny that, isn't it?) and he ends up giving her a lift back to the swanky hotel Daniel has reserved. One thing leads to another and they end up really liking eachother and planning another meeting. Then Martha meets Frank (Rufus Sewel) who is another annoying stereotype of an out of work actor. Frank and Martha do not share the flirting that Martha and Daniel did, nor the sweetness that Martha and Laurence did, but for some bizarre reason she likes him too. So they all like Martha and she likes them. Martha finds out that she has played them off against oneanother, and is disgusted with the way they all fight for her like a toy...

Superb London Budget Hotel

Advantages: Beautiful setting in a buzzing part of London
Disadvantages: Not suitable for disabled people - no lift

...The Ashley Hotel is a superb, well-priced B&B hotel in a gorgeous location in central London. It is situated in Norfolk Square, Paddington, and is just 2 minutes walk from Paddington station. Paddington itself is a buzzing district of London adjacent to the West End, and is packed full of shops, restaurants, bars etc. Norfolk Square is an oasis of tranquility amongst this. It is a square (obviously) of tall, elegant Victorian mansions, all of which have been turned into budget hotels. The hotels are painted white and cream, and have tall windows and beautiful old railings outside. In the centre of them all is a railed garden. Obviously, it was once a place of residence for people of means in the Upstairs-Downstairs tradition. The Ashley Hotel comprises 3 mansions made into one, and has 50 (I think) rooms. The reception is...

Gilo

Advantages: Fills a gap that can't otherwise be filled
Disadvantages: Has a lack of ability

...Nobody has written a review on our dear Gilo yet so I thought I should have a crack. I will try to give an accurate review of his career and his position in the England team. He is slow left-armer by trade, so he's not a pure spin bowler. As he dlivers the ball, he tends to brush the ball just as he releases it. Ashley Giles made his debut for England in July 1998. It was the third test against South Africa at Old Trafford, Manchester. He has gone on to represent his country 35 times at home and abroad. He has experienced many triumphs in his time in the team but hasn't himself been largely responsible for the sides recent success, notably victories against the West Indies and Pakistan a few years ago. TEST CAREER STATS Bowling ------> Deliveries: 8170 Maidens: 295 Runs Conceeded: 3718 Wickets: 90 Average: 41.31 Strike Rate...

Dispelling the myths of the Da Vinci Code

Advantages: a factual analysis of theDa Vinci codes "secrets"
Disadvantages: will open up many more questions

...It may seem as if a book such as the Magdalene Legacy is just an attempt to jump on the bandwagon of the success of Dan Browns work and the Da Vinci Code in particular. To a lesser degree and in terms of timing that may be true, but its author, Laurence Gardner, has been publishing books around such subjects for years. Its very probable that Brown is a fan of his work as he is an obvious source of information, along side the much more controversial and widely reported "Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" by Michael Baigent and co. So whilst the timing of the books release may seem to be a corporate strategy, it only seems that way because this book is the natural response to the hype of Browns work. Before the Da Vinci Code there was less of a need to set the record straight in the sensitive yet less than popular subject matter that is...
