The stories behind the four singles which went to make up the Associates' second album are legion. How Billy MacKenzie sang through a vacuum cleaner tube on "Kitchen Person"; how cups were stuck on heads to help implement "The Associate"; the phlegmy coughs which doubled as backing vocals on "Q Quarters". Listening to Fourth Drawer Down now, it seems incredible Rankine and MacKenzie were allowed to get away with so much. But thank goodness they were. MacKenzie's typically overwrought falsetto still carries considerable emotional clout when matched to his partner's dislocated funk and the dark, skewed electronica. The strangeness doesn't stop there, either; among the five bonus tracks included is the song ("Straw Towels") which resulted in the Associates being hospitalised, suffering from drug-induced panic attacks. Plus, there's the rather strange "Blue Soap"--recorded in one take by Billy while he was in the bath listening to a tape of "Kitchen Person". They really don't make them like this any more. --Jerry Thackray

Double Hipness is a confusion of delights. Twenty-five rare and unreleased tracks which neatly fill in most of the gaps on the Associates' mercurial, tempestuous career. There are tracks from MacKenzie and Rankine's late 1970's cabaret roots, and early demos which owed a fair amount to both Station To Station-era Bowie and the collected poise of The Sparks. (Watch out for the imaginary dance craze "Do The Call Girl".) There are six tracks from the ill-fated 1993 reunion, even featuring a camp, glitter stomp riposte to The Smiths' own Associates tribute song "William it was Really Nothing". There are dark demos of "Party Fears Two" and "Club Country". There are out-takes from the first album The Affectionate Punch, recorded after the pair were given endless hours of studio time. There's the Bacharach tribute, "Saline Drips". There's the emotionally heightened take on David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging". There's the rather bewildering and perverted title track... and so on. Perfect for both the casual observer and obsessive fan--who probably will have many of these on crackly bootleg already. --Jerry Thackray
...I received a sample Aromatherapy Associates light relax bath shower oil in my beauty box from Birchbox. I had tried the revive morning oil from the same brand before and wasn't really very impressed so I had reservations before trying this. I was quite relived to have the 'light' version to try.
The bottle and packaging is a pretty colour and high quality with blue accent...
Advantages: Inexpensive, nice scent, who doesn't love Princesses? Disadvantages: None
Our daughter is now four and a half years old, and eighteen months into her Princess fetish phase. At least, I hope it's a phase!
I bought several bottles of this Princess Bath and Shower Gel when I saw it on offer for a little over a pound. We are not particularly brand loyal, and anything with princesses on the packaging must be ok right? Or at least acceptable to a four year...
Advantages: Fun for kids, cleans well, ok for sensitive skin Disadvantages: Not a particularly nice scent to it
...A couple of years ago, my son was a big fan of the Disney ?Cars? films and for Christmas this year, he received the Cars Bath and Shower Gel as a gift from a family member.
I quite like products like this as it encourages children to wash more, as all parents know the difficulties of getting children into the bath ? especially boys! If they find the shower gel or bubble bath they are using more...
