Advantages: Easy to play and ideal for younger gamers Disadvantages: Poor graphics, poor sound, too much repetition to progress through the game
...Asterix at the Olympics is yet another sports game released as a result of the 2008 Olympic games available for the Nintendo DS and as such has a lot to compete against.
In this game Asterix (the blonde haired Gaul with the bushy moustache, winged shoes and winged helmet) and his side kick, Obelix (the red headed Gaul with long plaits, big appetite and even bigger stomach) participate in a series of different events in a bid to win the Gaul Olympics, earning cash along the way.
****Game modes****
This game has a single player mode only, which is a real shame since it doesn?t allow you to go head to head against your friends.
This game has limited modes in that there are only 2. You have the choice of training or going to the Olympics only.
As its name suggests training allows the user to practice each event, in isolation...
Advantages: Great fun for all ages. Disadvantages: Some of the original humour can be lost in the translation
...matter is also of wider interest than might first appear: after all, the Romans didn't just occupy Gaul, but a good chunk of Europe, and many people have drawn parallels between the Roman empire's dominance as represented in Asterix (which was never intended as a true historical representation) and today's picture where American culture dominates...
Indeed, José Beauvais, a French anti-globalisation hero, has often been likened to the mustachioed Gaul warrior, and not only because of the physical likeness. This, along with the European flavour of the stories, could explain in part why Asterix was never hugely successful in the USA.
~Asterix at the Olympic Games~
***********************************
After this rather long introduction (which I felt was necessary to give a sense of what Asterix is about), let me talk a little about...
Advantages: You can get there by public transport Disadvantages: The queues
...I went to Paris for the week end and on Sunday we weren't sure whether to go to Versailles or the Parc Asterix, in the end we chose what we thought would be a day of fun. But first let me tell you:
**** How to get there:
You can go by car; it's about 30 km north of Paris (Autoroute A1). We don't have a car so we took the RER first (RER B) which takes you to Roissy Charles de Gaulle Terminal 1 and then a bus to the Parc Asterix. From central Paris (gare de Lyon) it took us about 30 mn to go to the airport and then about 20mn to the Parc. In theory, there should be a bus every 30mn, we had to wait for one hour before a bus came and when we complained to the driver he told us that we probably didn't see the other bus!
**** How much is it?
We paid for out tickets at the station as they do a deal: train+ticket will cost you 38...
Advantages: Lots Of Events Disadvantages: No Online, Some Poor Events
...Cashing In On The Olympics?
It can hardly have escaped your attention that the Olympic Games has been held in China and "Team GB" did quite well all things considered. So sales of this game must be up. This time Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog has joined in with Nintendo's Mario this time. The reason for this pairing up is purely commercial.
You can control a myriad of characters from the Mario and Sonic games, or you can play as your Mii character, I always do. Each character has different characteristics and handle events subtly differently. The events are split into the relevant categories of Track, Field, Gymnastics etc... There are nine categories in total.
Some events however are total turkeys such as rowing, where you have to maintain a rowing like motion with the two controls while pressing two...
...Mario and Sonic have come together to make a game called "Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games" this game was made for the 2008 Olympic Games in China. It isn't a promo game and is still around. But is it worth it?
GAMEPLAY
You can choose from a variety of different games, like 100m, 100m freestyle, table tennis, pole vault etc. These are fun, but some of the controls are hard and get boring after a while.
GRAPHICS
The game has good graphics, and it is a game with both Mario AND Sonic in it. It's great that the two rivals look good together in one game. The graphics are 3D which is also good, because mainly in the "Mario" and "Sonic" games, the graphics are 2D. It's good that they look good in 3D
SOUND
There are good sound effects, like when you land on a mat, but there isn't much music. Most of the characters say...
Advantages: great performances Disadvantages: swimmers were poor
...How things can change around in just a few days.
Before the weekend there I was berating the British swimmers for being gutless, no-hopers ( I still have that view by the way) and hoping that our athletes would at least do their best.
Well, first we had the fantastic sight of our Rowers grabbing Olympic Gold in the Fours. Steve Redgrave going into the record books having won Gold at FIVE consecutive Olympics - FANTASTIC. It should definitely be Sir Steve when he returns. He is an inspiration to sports people, both in this country and throughout the world. So modest and realistic, not the big headed boastful sports `jock' that he would have every right to be. Matt Pinsent, Tim Foster and James Cracknell all played their part in this piece of sporting legend.
Then our Women's four won a silver, right on the line. Good on you...

Review of OLYMPICS
Advantages: Hours of fun, for the whole family Disadvantages: You arms can ache.
...This game has brought back many memories for me, I remember in the 1990's playing Sonic on the Sega consoles and Mario on the Nintendo console. So I was amazed when I noticed the both sonic and Mario had been brought together for the first time in this Olympic Games wii game.
OLYMPIC GAMES
This is unlike any other older Mario of Sonic Platform game, it is basically made up of many mini games, which are based around the Olympic Games.
The object of the game is to compete against the computer or other opponents, and gain a winning place in the top three, this will then give your character a bronze, silver or gold medal.
As you gain medals other games will be unlocked, the aim is to gain medals within the top three for every character in every event.
There are no online play options on the game, but the game tracks all...
Advantages: variety of games to play Disadvantages: Slow loading
...Mario & Sonic at the olympic games was the first game i bought after getting a Wii for christmas.
I personally think that it is an excellent first game to get for the Wii. You can happily play for hours and hours becuase of the wide variety of events you can play. These events include;
*"Swimming"
*"Archery"
*"Running"
*"Hurdles"
*"Long jump"
*"Triple jump"
*High jump"
*"Pole vault"
*"Hammer throw"
*"Javeline throw"
*"Epée"
*"Trampoline"
*"Vault"
*"Rowing"
*"Skeet"
*"Tennis"
So as you can see by this list you have a wide variety to choose from but you also have the options of unlocking different games, this can be done by breaking records and so on. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is fun for all the family to enjoy because it has a multiplayer option of upto 4 people. You also get to choose from all your favourite...
Advantages: Great fun, realistic actions Disadvantages: Will tire you out easily
...At The Olympic Games firstly on the Nintendo Wii, but followed shortly on the handheld DS, and I must admit it's a cracker!
With all the talk about games consoles these days being no good for children, who sit bashing buttons when they should be outside getting exercise, Mario & Sonic comes as a breath of fresh air, as after a few rounds of events and waving the Wii remote around, I certainly was soon out of breath.
There's 24 events to choose from which will work out a certain part of your body and co-ordination, from reaction speeds to accuracy. Most events require you to use both the Wii remote and Nunchuck, but some only need the remote. The most common action which is used on a lot of events, such as the 100m sprint and swimming, is to wave the remote and nunchuck up and down as fast as possible. Believe me, you will get tired after doing this...
Advantages: Lots to see, great tower Disadvantages: Some parts very shabby, tour not long enough
...The olympic stadium was high on our list of priorities when we went to Montreal as it seems to be my boyfriend's ambition to visit every olympic stadium ever built - much to my dismay! But it turned out to be well worth a look.
HISTORY:
Montreal was awarded the the olympics by the IOC in 1970. Representatives travelled to Munich in 1972 to see how they managed the games. The construction of the site began in 1973 and the games were held 3 years later in 1976. Not all of the complex was finished for the games. The tower was not completely finished until 1987.
After the Olympics the stadium became home to the Montreal baseball team (until they moved to Washington D.C.). It now holds various sporting events and trade shows. The swimming pool complex is now used by the public and the velodrome is now home to a biodome which house 4...
