...Considering my tube of Margaret Astor mascara was free with a magazine, it is one of the best items of make up I have ever used. I might not still have the magazine, let alone remember which one it was, but 7 months later I am still faithfully using my Margaret Astor Magic Style mascara. I have very sensitive eyes - anything remotely perfumed is out, and Maybelline Great Lash is a big no-no. Margaret Astor however is just right. Packaging In a nice, sleek silver tube, this is a simple yet attractive tube of mascara. It doesn't look cheap but nor is it snobbish. The top/wand has a clear plastic rounded end with a cute little flower on it. This logo adorns all of the Margaret Astor range. At approximately 4 inches long, the tube fits in any small makeup bag or you can pop it in your handbag to use after work or on a night out...

Ghostly Groom and Comb Your Lashes

Advantages: separates & lengthens lashes with a comb
Disadvantages: not much colour

...Don’t brush your lashes, comb them. I thought every one would be talking about this new mascara, made by Astor, but the search engines which are usually bombarded with info upon info just seem to churn out German results. Though I did manage to find one bit of info about this and that is the fact that it is only sold in selected Boots stores. This mascara isn’t made by a German company, it is a French one. Made in Paris to be exact. People just don’t know what they’re missing out on. I thought Max Factor More Lashes had it all, but I was badly mistaken after trying Astor Calligraphy Length & Separation Mascara for the first time. disappointing lippy

Advantages: pretty casing...er, mine was free!

...After buying the March 2001 issue of Marie Claire, I was very pleased (and surprised!) to find a voucher for a free-of-charge 'Soft Sensation' Margaret Astor lipstick enclosed with the magazine. After shelling out £2.70 for Marie Claire, I felt happy that I could somehow compensate myself with a lipstick that sells for £4.99 in Boots. Before claiming my lippy however, I had to telephone a special hotline to claim my Marie Claire 'Platinum Card', which has to be used in conjunction with the offers in the magazine. Bright Eyes, not burning like fire

Advantages: Long lasting, reasonably priced

...Finally, a long lasting eyeshadow that does exactly what it says on the tin. And from Margaret Astor - which is as yet unchartered territory for my make up hunting expeditions. This brand is apparently Rimmel's big sister - both are owned by Coty.(You remember them, your nan used to wear their perfumes!!) Margaret Astor have recently added Fresh Eye Shadow to the range, and I am delighted. I saw this in Boots recently,and you can probably see my train of thought .. new.. cheaper than Clinique... only £3.99 ... oh, go on then!! I tried it out the next morning and was very pleasantly surprised. The consistancy is a little more fluid than Cliniques Touch Tint for Eyes. This made it easier to apply, as it went on a bit like a gloss. And then it stuck. All day. And most of the night!! There were no visible creases, wrinkles or slippage...

Review of Margaret Astor Fresh Eyes

Conveniently located, but glorified B and B

Advantages: Location, helpful staff
Disadvantages: Really just a bed and breakfast

...I recently stayed 3 nights in the Astor Hotel, Zurich whilst attending a conference in the city. While the staff were very helpful and the accomodation adequate, it didn't overly impress me. The hotel is conveniently located, just 5 minutes' walk from the city centre and has a tram line and stop just outside the front entrance. This can be very handy, but the noise can also make it difficult to get an early night. The single room I stayed in was well-sized and had a queen-sized bed, 50-channel TV (including many foreign channels such as BBC Prime), mini-bar and en-suite bathroom. It was always warm (sometimes too warm), but the one thing it lacked was any tea/coffee-making facilities. As mentioned, the hotel staff are very friendly and willing to help out. They also speak good English, which saved me from embarrassing myself...

I had no sensations, soft or otherwise

...It is incredibly rare that I will treat myself to a beauty product, not because I?m not bothered about that kind of thing, but because I always seem to be spending my money on friends birthdays, or it simply vanishes from my grasp. ...I was out shopping and I dicided I needed a new mascara, as I walked past boots I saw an advertisement in the window about the new astor calligraphy mascara. It was quite expensive but hay I had to treat myself once an a while.(even though I had been treating myself all day!) I walked over to the make-up stand and egsamined the tube, a small thin black tube with 4 ml of mascara in it. I opened up the tester and was quite surprised to see that instead of a thick clumpy mascara brush there was a small plastic closely toothed comb instead. I bought one and went to the public loos and, well I was almost knocked over buy the grusome pong! Anyway I walked over to the mirror, walk I mean run! Whiffy Lippy

Advantages: Good range of practical colours, lovely packaging
Disadvantages: Horrible smell, horrible taste, no staying power whatsoever

...You know how it is when you have a make-up item which you have been using for years, keeping it just for special occasions as it starts to run out, because you like it so much, but know it has been discontinued? Well, that's what happened to me with a gorgeous lipstick that I bought in Top Shop about 3 years ago! Rough Dancing, Easy Listening

Advantages: Gorgeous sultry tango music for late-night listening.
Disadvantages: Only about 40 minutes of music, not to everyone's taste.

...Argentinian Astor Piazzolla was responsible for the creation of "tango nuevo", or new/modern tango, fusing traditional tango music with jazz and classical elements. (If you know of Gotan Project, he was an inspiration for them - they also sometimes play his compositions.) While most of the other albums he recorded are sparklingly precise, this one is slightly rougher round the edges, often slow, sultry, even dirty - and deliberately so, Piazzolla himself said the music on this album was "meant to be played by drunk musicians in a bordello". Which is fair enough, given that is exactly where the tango originated. This is a late recording, made in 1987 (he died in 1992) and features a small group of musicians playing piano, violin, bass, electric guitar, clarinet/alto sax, and bandoneon, which Piazzola himself plays - he did so...
