The Waldorf Astoria - 2005

Advantages: Superb location and communal areas

...The Waldorf Astoria, An iconic, Landmark Hotel. This hotel has been in many films, so....I suppose I should be saying wow. My husband and I visited New York in the February of 2005. I was treated to a stay at the Waldorf Astoria. When we entered the hotel, I was.......blown away. The entrance is plush, extravagant yet elegant, with a pianist playing music, for those that wish to sit and enjoy a drink and just take in their surroundings. The reception area again was stunning. That unfortunately is where the glamour of it all stopped, during our 10 day stay, I lost count of how many times their \"systems were down\". Checking in therefore took an age. When we eventually got our key and were directed to our room, the disapointment set in. The room was shabby, the bathroom, although ornate and I am sure impressive in it\'s time...

The Ataris - So Long, Astoria

Advantages: fun, catchy, great riffs
Disadvantages: not a vast fan-base

...Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Yellowcard, Simple Plan, Mest etc ??. a line of Green Day wannabes growing longer with every intake of breath. Yet, other than Good Charlotte, there is only one band that have earned the god given right to be spoken of in the same sentence as Green Day. That band hit the scene with the release of their album ?Blue Skies, Broken Hearts ?.. Next 12 Exits? in 1999 through Kung Fu Records. That album, however infectious, was nothing compared to the success they would see with the follow up album ?So Long, Astoria? (and no that?s not in reference to the London gig venue). Released in 2003 through Sony Music, ?So Long Astoria? came full to the brim with great lyrics and hooks so infectious that you wouldn?t want anything else. Oh ?.. And the name of the band ???? The Ataris. Hailing from San Diego...

Simply Gloria Estefan

Advantages: you will own it forever

...The opinion I am writing about is Gloria Estefans, "Anything For You". I like this song because it was my first special song for me and my first girlfriend Gill when I was 15. We listened to it a lot during that year it was sort of an incentitive to keep talking and loving each other. I bought this song because I wanted to remember her for we broke up a year later. We drifted apart and ran out of things to say to each other, in other words ironically we stopped talking funny hey how things work out. I moved away to look after my alcoholic grandad with my mum and dad and well.... It was too far away from her so she finished with me :-(.. ...I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in January 2004, which was my first (and only so far) trip to New York, and at the time only my second trip to the USA. Given that I didn't feel I'd be regularly jetting off to New York, I'd decided to check us into the hotel I'd always heard about and hence had always wanted to stay at. We arrived late evening by taxi which dropped us off at the main entrance to the hotel on Park Avenue. The lobby area is large, with the reception being located right at the back, meaning you have to walk through the lobby and past the main lifts to get to check in to your room. It's not a problem as such, but you are left following your nose and common sense, which, when your body is telling you it's 2am, you're not really up to doing. We booked the hotel stay through BA Holidays rather than directly...

Gloria Palace Amadores Beach

Advantages: Overlooking the sea, 2 minute walk to Puerto Rico
Disadvantages: Food was too good, likely to put weight on

...This was by far the nicest hotel I have had the pleasure of staying in on holiday. Gloria Palace sits high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. On our arrival at 11pm the dining room was still set up for ourselves and another 4 guests and it was lovely to sit and eat some food and have a couple of drinks after our long journey. Rooms were immaculate with a huge bed, sitting area and fitted wardrobes the length of one wall. The bathroom was again immaculate with bath shower toilet & double sinks. Staff were very friendly and accomodating especially the barman in the cocktail lounge who was so funny he could have been the entertainment! The decor in the hotel was amazing, like you had walked into a palace, marbled floors, and gold everywhere. The reception area was huge with numerous small shops, huge seating area with big comfy settees...

Advantages: Cathy Moriarty, Bonnie Bedelia; Sharon Stone gives her all, as usual. It isn't enough.
Disadvantages: Miscasting celebrated: laughably unmenacing Northam, Scott too nice; dull pacing, annoying kid, forced accents.

...'Gloria', released to disappointed audiences, Stone and Lumet fans in 1999, cannot muster any arguments to defend its right to exist. To think that it was * the * Sidney Lumet, director of 'Dog Day Afternoon', 'Serpico' and 'Network', to name just a few iconic American films of the 70s, who was responsible for this stinker, too. Save for the ordinary cinematography, everything else in it is wrong. An ex-con who took the rap for her boyfriend Kevin (Jeremy Northam), Gloria (Sharon Stone) finishes her three-year term in Florida and heads for New York City to get help from the old boyfriend. ...Over Christmas, I must have been into Boots, and to the Perfume everyday. All for a spray of perfume. The perfume in question was Cacharel’s Gloria. It’s quite a new fragrance, that hasn’t been on the market very long. I’m against buying myself perfume, I always wait until someone buys it for me! Anyway, I got a Gloria set off my bloke for Xmas, as part of my present. The name of the perfume supposedly comes from a famous song from the 60's. The prices and sizes range in this product, the bottle sizes are 30ml, 50ml and 100ml, the bottle I got was 50ml, and I also got a bottle of bath oil with it. The bottle I got would cost £25 on Scentrepoint.co.uk and the 30ml costs £21 and the 100ml, £39. The perfume costs approximately the same in boots (I noticed!) but I know my bloke bought it from House...

The Incriminating Mole & Graveyard Gloria!

Advantages: Hilarious, non-stop laughs
Disadvantages: Potentially offensive to some

With a bit of help from Wendy and Brian, he sets up 'Graveyard Gloria' - a woman who dances at the local fair, they've convinced to pretend to get really turned on at the idea of a Graveyard. But of course, Tommy & co are one step ahead of him, and it doesn't turn out how PeeWee planned - theres a repeat of a certain scene involving a certain road! I find this film equally funny, if not better - and whilst you dont have the fun that was Lassie, you do have Tommys latest revenge on Balbricker, Wendys revenge on a corrupt politician and the gangs revenge on the KKK. I dont want to reveal too much, but its well worth seeing. Certainly, it continues to prove how fun teenage adolescence in the 50's was!
