Very stable
Review of ASUS Intel 440BX Chipset P2B - motherboard - ATX - i440BX by yhwman

Advantages: Stable, feature rich
Disadvantages: None

...The Asus P2B is a stable and feature rich motherboard. It replaced a TMC motherboard I had which had ‘issues’ with Nvidia graphics cards. Since the swap my computer has been more stable in general use, as well as when the graphics card is working hard. Asus support the board well, a recent BIOS update added APCI power saving support. You get onboard USB, two EIDE channels, floppy disk controller, two serial ports, one parallel port and two ps/2 ports and the option to connect an infra red port. Wow! There’s lots of setup options to keep the tweakers happy and even the option of an Asus network card, which adds wake on LAN capability. Asus even have free motherboard monitoring/trouble shooting software available for download! If your slot 1 computer crashes a lot, try changing motherboards – you could be pleasantly surprised.... A very reasonable K7-1 or K-2 board
Review of ASUS AMD 751 Chipset K7M - motherboard - ATX - AMD-751 by JamesForrester

Advantages: A very stable, high-speed board
Disadvantages: Does not support higher clock-speeds well, or AGP 4x, or the largest range of overclocking features known to man

...The Asus K7M, when I bought it, was widely regarded as the best avaliable board for the AMD K7-1 and K7-2 processors (slot A type). This is a reputation that, in my opinion, it deserved. Not only is it rock-solid stable, but it has a useful ability to scale up the FSB speed to 133MHz, enabling overclocking to a limited extent, although if you want to do this seriously, I would recommend getting a dedicated overclocking card. The board I got was the 'plain' board - that is, one without the on-board audio kit, as I already had a reasonable sound card. However, I am told that this is not of unreasonable qualiy, given that it is merely intended as a 'stop-gap' item, and not for 'serious' use. The lack of AGP 4x, and the inability to use processors at too high a clock speed, are the only problems I found with this board - but then, AGP 4x... Read review

It took a long time to WinTV
Review of Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1100 by rbell5ciao

Advantages: Inexpensive and useful
Disadvantages: Does not install on all motherboards tried

... I 1st installed this on a Vista machine with an Asus K8V SE motherboard The card was seemingly installed OK but after scan I could not receive any freeview channels, only analogue so I rang the help desk because the analogue system has no future. They said they have information that the card, for some inexplicable reason, does not work with some motherboards, something to do with power supply available they thought. So I tried every PCI slot on that machine then moved to another PC with a Winfast motherboard and XP professional. Tried every slot on that - still no joy. After several phone calls to this excellent help line and waiting for their USA division to update the drivers they offered to replace the card just to see if it was faulty. This they did, although it did take a few weeks because apparently... Read review

Excellent Motherboard, but expensive
Review of ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP AiLifestyle Series - motherboard - ATX - iP965 by webspot

Advantages: Silent heatpipe, PCI express, Supports Core2Duo
Disadvantages: Price

...Excellent motherboard. This is the first motherboard that I have installed in a computer before, and did ASUS make it easy for me! The manual is very clear, and tells you where everything is. All the connectors matched up with my Akasa Zen Case connectors, which I thought was great, as since then I didn't have the same experience with a Thermaltake case. The silent heatpipe, makes this a very quiet motherboard, whereas most normal motherboards would have a rubbish little fan that gets clogged with dust and ends up making a terrible noise. If you need to have a fan on the chipset heatsink, asus provide a fan that slots on to the top of the heatsink. Aswell as the chipset fan, ASUS provide loads of other stuff. This includes USB expansion, firewire expansion, SATA cables, and more! Great if you need any of this stuff. Overall I think... Read review

Building an Athlon System
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by Vistaway

Advantages: Cheaper and faster than Intel
Disadvantages: Fewer and more expensive motherboards

...After suffering with a P200 for too long, I decided to build a new system - and my sights fell towards AMD. The Athlon is a great chip, which offers the desirable combination of performance and price. The chips are significantly cheaper than similar Intel ones, but Slot A motherboards do run more expensive. Even so, the combination of an Athlon 700 and Asus K7V (£230)was much cheaper than the same Intel combo would have been. Installation was simple, with Asus providing a great manual. There was a problem with the motherboard initially (wouldn't POST), but a second one worked perfectly. My system has been running dead stable, cool, and fast! Even with a less-than-ideal AGP 2x graphics card, the performance in games and graphics apps is fantastic. I am completely satisfied with the AMD processor, and am currently shopping... Read review

Brilliant laptop
Review of ASUS A6Km Q035H - Turion 64 mobile technology MT-32 1.8 GHz - 15.4" TFT by Nuclear_darkness

Advantages: Mobile, lightweight, versatile
Disadvantages: Battery life varies, needs hacked video card drivers

.... A list of programs it came with are as follows: Nero Express 6, Cyberlink Medi@Show 2.0 SE, Norton Internet Security 2005, ASUS Hotkey, ASUS NB Probe, ASUS Power4 Gear+, ASUS ChkMail, ASUS Live Update, Adobe Acrobat Reader 7, CyberLink PowerDirector 3.0 DE, ASUSDVD XP 6.0. Performance Firstly I will look at the externals. Monitor The monitor is a very high quality 15.4inch wide screen. It happily churns out frame after frame of high quality imagery , after owning it now for 8 months there has not been a problem nor has it got a single dead pixel and I have just double checked that for you lucky people. The monitor also dons a very nifty feature of having a built in camera and microphone at the top of the screen, which I have used and is of high quality, makes for good use over msn. Keyboard Secondly the keyboard, although laptop... Read review

Fast enough for your needs
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67GHz SoA by os7210

Advantages: Fast, cheap, easy to install.
Disadvantages: Gets very hot.

...the temperature it seemed to be far too high (55 degrees C when not doing anything, and up to 75 degrees C when running the latest games). I decided to remove the official heatsink and buy a Zalman Flower Cooler, which has reduced the temperature by 20 degrees C! I am impressed by the amount of speed with which I am able to do things on the PC eg games and applications - a significant jump from my previous 1 Ghz AMDathlon processor. When you consider the performance you are getting for the price - I would have no hesitation in recommending this processor. In use with an Asus A7v333 board, 512 MB PC2700 memory and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 graphics card I can achieve scores of 9600-9900 on 3D Mark 2001 SE benchmarking software.... Read review

An excellent budget upgrade!
Review of ASUS A8N-SLI SE - motherboard - ATX - nForce4 SLI by codiak

Advantages: Excelent choice when moving from AGP to PCI-E
Disadvantages: Not quite the rolls royce in this range from ASUS

...I've been an avid gamer for many years now and I can put my hand on my heart and say it's becoming an expensive pass-time. So when the time came to move from My Athlon XP 3200+ gaming rig with AGP I took a small step in the right direction and went to an Athlon 64 system with AGP support until I could afford a PCI-E card. That way not taking the whole move in one big hit. So fast forward and bit and I am ready to upgrade again, so off I go and start doing my homework. A friend of mine is even more of an enthusiast than me so you can't beat user experience, he was running an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe - no surprises there, and I must say I was impresses with the board. So back home I look into the ASUS range as I am a fan of their kit and have bought quite a few boards by them. What I was pleased to see was a value version of the A8N32-SLI... Read review

A good mid-range motherboard for P4 CPUs
Review of ASUS P4S800 - motherboard - ATX - SiS648FX by Vicster1784

Advantages: Inexpenisve, good performance, lots of ports and slots
Disadvantages: Ports a bit cluttered, no WiFi

...case, but the layout of the ports on the back, such as USB and Audio/Mic jacks is not the best. It’s very cluttered and often is a challenge to get to. My previous motherboard (also from Asus) had a similar issue and I had to make quite an effort to plug/unplug anything from the back. Other than that it’s done pretty well and everything on the actual board is color coded so that you can plug everything in quite easily, should you be upgrading or building your machine from scratch. The slots on the motherboard are: • Socket 478 (for Pentium 4 CPUs) • 4 DDR SDRAM DIMM slots • AGP 8x • 5 PCI • WiFi slot (not actually useful unless you buy the WiFi card from Asus for a lot of money) • ATX power • FDD • 2 IDE • 2 SerialATA • 2 USB 2.0 (for external wiring) • COM port • Game port • Audio/mic jacks • Ethernet • Fan controller ports Everything here... Extreme Performance For Gamers
Review of ASUS Striker Extreme Republic of Gamers Series - motherboard - ATX - nForce 680i SLI by safari004

Advantages: Array of Features, Overclocking and many more.
Disadvantages: Price

.... INTRODUCTION: Yet again ASUS has produced a brilliant motherboard. ASUS Striker Extreme lives up to the quality standards set by ASUS. This motherboard has a host of features to talk about. The layout of the motherboard is very good. It is based on the highest end Nvidia nForce 680i SLI chipset. It is a full ATX Form Factor(24x30cm) motherboard. It features LGA 775 Socket for Intel processors to be installed. FEATURES: * It support old Intel processor like Pentium 4 and Pentium D. * It also support all Core 2 Duo family processors. * It support 1333 FSB, which mean we can use the upcoming Intel processors having 1333 FSB with a BIOS update. * It support a maximum of 8 GB of DDR2 RAM in Dual Channel. * This motherboard has three PCI Express x16 slots, two of which you can use for SLI mode. * It also has two gigabit Ethernet...
