Guide To Athlon64
Review of AMD Athlon 64 4000+ / 2.6 GHz processor by
Omerali
Advantages: Read review
Disadvantages: Read review
...that we are interested in come in the following flavours :-
Athlon64 Socket 754 :- These include 2800+,3000+,3200+,3400+,3700+.
These Are the Best Price/Performance CPUs. I'd personally suggest the 3200+. They utilize Single Channel Memory. The best chipset for this would be Nforce3 250GB
Athlon64 Socket 939 :- These, So far, include 3500+ 3800+
They are based on the Socket 939 platform. They have DUAL Channel Memory and 512 L2 Cache. They are rather pricey but their performance/price is better than the top-of-the-line offerings from Intel.
Athlon64 FX Socket 939 :- This Just has the FX53.
Its the Top of the cream and the World's fastest performing processors [Except it looses to the P4 3.0ghz + CPUs in some tests]. It has Dual Channel Memory Controller and 1MB L2Cache. It works with both ECC and Non EEC registered Ram. EEC...

Athlon Xp 2800+ - Still very nice
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.08 GHz processor by
mattsouthern
Advantages: Quick, Never an error, Very affordable
Disadvantages: NONE!
...I bought this processor nearly 18 months ago. This was before the Athlon 64s were around and when this CPU was a top of the line beast. It cost me around £160 but was well worth the money.
I bought it OEM. This means that it did not come with the official AMD heatsink and fan but then I really didn't want that anyway. I always find these certified fans too noisy so I bought a Zalman CNPS6000-CU AMD cooler. If you have seen these then you will know they are not your typical heatsink and fan. They have a huge surface area and a large fan running at a very low RPM. This makes for efficient and quiet cooling. The CPU runs at around 55C and if you are playing games or a CPU demanding application, then you can turn the fan up to compensate.
Since I have had this CPU for such a long time I would have expected to be playing games...

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3500+ / 2.2 GHz processor by
china_wolf
Advantages: 64-bit future proofed, speedy, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Dual core AMD 64 CPUS are faster... but hey it would make this CPU cheaper so it's not all bad!
...clock speed frequencies i.e. 2.2GHz. This enabled it to run a lot cooler (around 45 degrees Celsius at full load), use a lot less power, and enabled feasible overclocking (that is running a CPU faster than it is intended to be run at) even with the provided heatsink and fan in the retail box. They labelled their CPUs as 3000+ even if it was a 2.2GHz processor to show that it ran at the equivalent speed of Intel's 3GHz CPU.
So how does AMD manage to have their CPU's run more efficiently than Intel's even with lower clock speeds? Although a lot of things contribute to it such as cache memory, front side bus and the like, the main thing to effect it is due to the length of the CPU's pipeline.
A pipeline is set in stages, and the more stages it has the longer the pipeline is. AMD's Athlon 64 CPU pipeline length is between 12 - 17, whilst...

ELONEX Desktop PC (Athlon 64 X2 6000+) from ASDA
Review of Elonex Athlon 64 X2 6000 by
volcano
Advantages: reasonable high spec, plenty of USB ports, wireless LAN, firewire, very good price
Disadvantages: missing operatin system CD-ROM for that batch, took a long time to get it
...I bought this system back in August from ASDA electricals (on behalf of Elonex) for £464.95 (+ £12 delivery charge) with standard 1 yr warranty. The system arrived 3 days later. Around that time only and at that price I got AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core Processor, integrated 256mb PCI Express Graphics card and 7.1 Surround Sound, 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM, 320GB Maxtor DiamondMax 21 SATA-II Hard Disk, 18x Samsung DVD-Rewriter Multiformat inc. dual layer, 20" LCD monitor with speakers, Multi-Card Reader, Microsoft Keyboard & Optical Mouse. The Operating system (OS) is XP Home (XP Pro would be nice, XP Pro 64-bit even better). All software and drivers are pre-installed. The system is ready to run and doing well until one day I wanted to install some foreign fonts for my web browsers. It asked for the system CD-ROM and it is missing...

Athlon64 vs. Pentium4? No Contest!
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3200+ / 2 GHz processor by
Stingwray
Advantages: Best Bang for Buck
Disadvantages: Little 64-bit Software Support
...AMD have really got the right mix of ideas in this CPU, not only was it one of the first 64-bit CPUs on the market (a long time before Intel had a 64-bit CPU) it is also a major leap from the old SocketA CPUs.
Well whats changed? The CPU is now hidden under a heatspreader, much like the Pentium4. This gives added protection when installing the CPU into the socket and makes applying the thermal interface material (TIM) a lot easier. The socket arrangement is now alot better then old Socket A. Sockets 754, 939 and 940 all are the same size and have the same retention bracket making the Heatsink Fan (HSF) universal for the whole AMD range now.
However its what is going on inside the CPU is what has made it such a ground breaking model. 64-bit is the next step now for the computer market giving access to larger amounts of RAM...

AMD Athlon 64 4400+ X2
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ / 2.3 GHz processor by
richooooo
Advantages: Cheap,Fast,Easy to Install
Disadvantages: None
...it only uses 65 Watts of Electric, Better for the environment and cheaper for my bills. In Windows Vista the Processor gets rated 4.9 out of 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index which you can tell is very good for such a low priced CPU.
I would recommend getting a Power Supply of at least 400Watts for this processor and it must have a 24 Pin Power connector and a P4 Connector for the Motherboard, if you do not the computer may not start. You will also need to find a compatible motherboard for this as well but if you are building your own PC I would suspect you know which parts to use.
The CPU Runs at 2.3 GHZ it is overclockable but I did not try this as the computers were not for me. The other features this beast has are 64 bit Technology, 3Dnow!, Streaming SIMD Extensions, Streaming SIMD Extensions 2, Integrated memory controller...

New 64 bit series processors
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3000+ / 2 GHz processor by
munrrr98
Advantages: 64 bit processing
Disadvantages: none
...). These processors are much better than those they replaced and now severely deteste using the previous versions due to reduced speed and system performance. However be careful if purchasing them as they have many diferent core types and 3 main different socket types. The first were the socket 756's these are set to become obselete due to the amulgamation or the 940 and the 756 so create the 939. This socket supports both the Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 FX (the processor for people with more money than sense). This is the main platform for the latest developments and so i would strongly recommend getting a 939 motherboard. This is also bringing such new developments as PCI-E (express) onboard which will become very useful for increasing component speed. With regard to the cores of the processors these are the sections that process the processes...

The BEST processor you can get for under £100!
Review of AMD Athlon 64 3000+ / 2 GHz processor by
tomhughes
Advantages: Lightning fast with a variety of applications, fantastic price, good package
Disadvantages: Runs a bit hot, not much 64-bit software yet.
...THE CHOICE
I recently decided it was time to finally give my ancient Athlon 500-based system a rest and build a new one (on a budget of around £400). Obviously the CPU is a fairly important choice to make when building a new computer so I put in a lot of thought and research and eventually settled on the AMD Athlon64 3000+ for my new machine. The current price of the 3000+ model makes it only slightly more expensive than the 2800+ and actually cheaper than the equivalent AthlonXP! There's no Intel processor available that can touch it at this price. I paid around £95 for the P-I-B (Processor-In-Box) package, which includes everything you need.
The Athlon64 comes in various varieties, 754pin, 939pin, FX and a range of speeds, all of which have slight differences and may require different motherboards. The 3000+ I chose is a 754pin...

64 Bit Processor for the 32 Bit Age
Review of Compaq Presario SR1420UK - Athlon 64 3000+ by
self_aggressive
Advantages: Good all round PC
Disadvantages: Lack of 64 Bit programs
...'ve had this computer about 6 months now, and it's only frozen completely once, and I use it ALOT. It also hasn't slowed down much!
I think that this is a good round computer, with some real thought gone into the styling, but I don't think they thought to much about why a computer would need a 64bit processor... Maybe they were sold on the idea of it being better too.
And to help you Tech Heads, what I forgot to include was the Specs... Whoops...
AMD- Athlon 64 Bit, 3200+, Actual clock speed is 3 GHZ, but its faster than that.
It's got 160GB HDD, which 6 GB is recovery partition.
And it's got 512 RAM.
Hope that helps a bit more....

Athlon X2 6000+
Review of AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ / 3 GHz processor by
far_hk
Advantages: Integrated Memory Controller
Disadvantages: TDP, Price, Relative performance
...AMD has been on the decline after Intel introduced its core 2 Duo line of processors. It has been late on 65 nm process and they are paying for that. They had the market under total control just one year ago, but now they have lost even their loyal customers. AMD has to produce something very powerful and should be done quickly or they will even lose the small share that they has got.
Coming to the processor, Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is a midrange processor to compete Intel in the midrange segment. It is powerful but not enough to beat Intel's counter parts.
I got this processor in the PC which my uncle gifted to me. So, I have got it free. If I were given a choice before it was gifted to me, I certainly would have asked for an Intel processor in the same price range.
Looking at the processor, we note that it's speed is 3 GHz. It has...
