MSi 845E Max (6566e) Pentium 4 motherboard

Disadvantages: Requires a minimum of Win ME upwards

...Ive been using the MSi 845E max (6566e) motherboard for the past 2 years and it still performs as stable now as it did back then. The board itself is very well packaged and comes with all the usual extras including drivers CD and IDE cables for both CD-roms/hard drives and floppy disc aswell as an excellently informative and well laid out manual. The 845E Max by MSi supports all Pentium 4 processors as well as Celerons upto 3.06 ghz using the built in 845E Intel chipset and includes full support for both 133mhz front side bus (FSB) quad pumped (133 x 4 = 533 fsb) Pentium 4's and 184 pin PC 2100 (266mhz) DDR memory upto 2 ghz, there are 2 available memory slots which is plenty for most people and i whole heartedly recommend firstly adding 1 x 512mb of DDR to the motherboard so as to leave 1 free DDR slot if you ever chose to add...

Micro ATX board

Advantages: Good stable board
Disadvantages: Not many PCI slots

Not so good.

Advantages: It works...
Disadvantages: but not very well

...I bought this motherboard in the hope that is provided a 100Mhz FSB. I opened it up, and then read the manual to find that the 93, and 100Mhz clock factors have a little white piece of paper over it saying that it cannot use these speeds as it is not very stable. This motherbaord does like to crash now and then, and it the SiS chipset is not very good either. Don't bother with this motherboard, there are plenty around that are much better. The price was affordable though. The fastest processor supported by this motherboard is 400MHz, and is rather outdated now....

Oh Mother! Asus P5Q PRO ATX iP45

Advantages: soo many, cannot describe them in just few words
Disadvantages: none apparent

...and so I went to open it and so I went to install it and so on only to find out that my old motherboard wouldn't support it. Its BIOS was un-upgradeable (plus few more other reasons) and so I went out again to look for new motherboard. This time I had to have it instantly (yes the very same day) but you wouldn't believe me how very few shops in London sell motherboards. I managed to find one and only ( Asus P5Q PRO ATX iP45) and there I was on my way home with smile totally excited to set it up and get it running. Well again to my dissapointment I realised that this motherboard just won't fit in my old Dell chassis because Dell's speciality is probably custom made hardware or at least motherboards which are fitted in the chassis basically upside down + few extra weird things which are here (in my humble opinion) to prevent you from upgrading...

...The IT7 MAX2 is a great motherboard, with loads of features, and an unfortunate habit of ceasing to function. Mine lasted 15 months, others I've heard of lasting less. While some of its features are no longer unusual (533MHz bus, RAID, onboard 5.1 sound), it is the sheer number of features that make it special - add firewire ports, ten USB ports, but do note that it lacks traditional serial or parallel ports however. However, as it seems to have serious problems with long term reliability, I'd avoid it unless you're getting it very cheaply. I'm not a power user, and all my previous motherboards (including some that were really cheap) now spread among my extended family are still working fine, so I expected more than 15 months life from this more expensive model.
