The Audi A4, is a compact five seat (just) four door saloon car and a very well established competitor in the coveted ?junior executive? segment, therefore competing with badge icons such as the BMW 3-Series and C-Class Mercedes. In terms of size and purpose, this is a segment of the market populated with an immensely diverse and eclectic choice of models from the Alfa 159, through the Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6 to the Volvo S60 and yet in terms of sales, currently at least, Audi, with the A4, is showing all-comers the way. Audi, and most owners, view this car very much as a ?premium product?, those who have read past RICHADA car reviews will know that I put no store whatsoever in so called ?premium? branding and judge all cars on merit according to how I, as a driver, find them - irrespective of the badge. ...The vast majority of A4s are sold with quattro. Quattro A4s with 4 cyl and automatic transmission feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission quattro 1.8Ts are lively enough, while manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick. Lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission, though CVT versions are lazy from a stop. Test 1.8T CVT sedan did 8.6 sec 0-60 mph; test V6 CVT Cabriolet did 7.8. Seamless CVT acts much like conventional automatic, but requires use of manual mode for best performance. Manual transmissions controlled by precise shifters. S4's V8 strong at all speeds; test sedan did 5.6 sec 0-60. Audi A4 , more like AWWW D A bore

Disadvantages: Low,unreliable, tiny tiny boot, big little car

...the Audi A4 Avant has done to me its let me down and now all its minor points are building up , uncle Craig is going to get punched. So lets start with the practicality of the car?.Audi call it an Avant because frankly if they called it an estate they would be sued , the boot is tiny . When you look at the actual width of the car its all wheel arches and lowness , hence the internal room feels like a much smaller car , more of a Golf than a large estate , sorry Avant. This cramped layout extents through the whole car, there are no clever pockets or under seat storage, no deep side pockets and laughably only ONE cup holder. How on earth are you supposed to have a nice Latte with your passenger , one of you will have to risk inner thigh burns, and that is not good. Audi A3 1.6 SE

Advantages: Looks great on both the inside and the outside, feeling of safety when driving
Disadvantages: Cost of petrol, tyres etc, noise from engine, space

...I bought an Audi A3 1.6SE 3 door after saving for years. I was soooo excited when it came on a big lorry from Audi. The delivery man was very well dressed and gave me a demonstration of the vehicle and informed me what all the gadgets and buttons did on the inside. We even had a tour of the engine (I'm a girl, an engine is an engine - sorry!!!). I couldnt' have been more impressed. So, after the hours demonstration, and my brain whirring round my little head, i took off into the sunset to drive my 'dream' car. I LOVED it. I couldn't get enough. My husband loved driving it too. Audi A3 1.6 Sport (W)

Advantages: Stunningly good looking, well sought after - easy to sell on, definitely get more then you paid for if you've done the research
Disadvantages: Audi servicing and parts pricey, steep insurance, overall maintenance expensive

Audi A4 1.8T S Line 2004

Advantages: Driveability, Good Looks.
Disadvantages: Common Faults (But are not expensive to fix)

...Just upgraded to the Audi A4 1.8T S Line a few weeks ago from my Audi Cab 2.6 V6. I thought I was going to miss the power of the V6, how wrong i was!. The 1.8T with 190bhp is a quick machine and once the turbo kicks in you have hot hatch power in a saloon. These cars are ripe for tuning by way of ECU remapping, air filters, diverter valves and a number of other products which will increase BHP and torque. The S Line trim with the extra body deeper grill, spoiler, wide arches make the car look sporty without going over the top. On the interior the aluminum trimmings along with the half leather sports seat are classy and comfortable for long journeys. The suspension is stiff but solid on country road. Some things that go wrong in this model although these may have been rectified in the 2004 onward models are ignition coil...

Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec

Advantages: A great car from all angles
Disadvantages: Not as many extras included as I would have liked

...I am now the proud owner of a ford focus 1.6 zetec and for the first time in many years I have actually found a car that pretty muc suits all my needs. I have spent many a time in cars that are too big, too small, not suitable, not comfortable etc but this is everything I could ask for. I own the three door version but the doors open widely and when the front seat is moved forward there is plenty of room to get anyone in the back, even my mother in law who is disabled. The back of this car is extremely spacious, comfortably fitting 3 large adults in. The boot size is deceiving in that it looks pretty small but is very spacious indeed. Perfect for all those shopping bags as well as a childs pushchair. The actual drive of this car is superb. Mine runs on unleaded and is very economical. I can get over 200 miles to £35...

Audi A4: Are you a 'Compact Executive'

...The A4 Avant can be characterised as a strange mix of opposites: great to look at, but not to to drive; big on the outside, cramped on the inside, stylish yet dull. If you want a load-lugging estate car, the A4 is not for you. In fact, if you want a family car then the A4 is probably not the car for you either. The interior and boot could not be described as spacious - front seat occupants are likely to clash elbows and knock their knees on the centre console, rear seat passengers have their knees around their ears, and the boot is no more practical than on the saloon version. Just about everyone I've spoken to complains about backache. Along with the backache, I got cramp in the left (clutch) leg from having the seat too far back just so as I could avoid the centre console... ...The Audi A4 2.0 is a handsome high quality car with a smooth highway ride and generally low noise levels. Interior The interior is snug for 4 occupants although those in the rear seats should not be taller than 1.7M as legroom is limited. The seats are well constructed for comfort but lack sufficient sideways restraint for more enthusiastic cornering. The seat longitudinal adjustment is by lever located on the left, a bar across the front of the seat would be simpler to locate. The rake and height adjustment controls work well. Elegant entry or egress is thwarted by the low roofline that forces passengers to contort somewhat, particularly in the case of rear seat occupants. The drivers door armrest does not have a handle on the inner end making for a long reach when closing a fully opened door. Footwell and pavement...
