It is the most powerful and expensive four cylinder front wheel drive A4 saloon. The A4 range starts at £20,485 for the 118bhp 1.8TFSi and tops out at a whopping £33,700 for the 237bhp 3.0 TDi Quattro (four wheel drive) Executive S Line. Audi A4 1.8T S Line 2004

Advantages: Driveability, Good Looks.
Disadvantages: Common Faults (But are not expensive to fix)

...Just upgraded to the Audi A4 1.8T S Line a few weeks ago from my Audi Cab 2.6 V6. I thought I was going to miss the power of the V6, how wrong i was!. The 1.8T with 190bhp is a quick machine and once the turbo kicks in you have hot hatch power in a saloon. These cars are ripe for tuning by way of ECU remapping, air filters, diverter valves and a number of other products which will increase BHP and torque. The S Line trim with the extra body deeper grill, spoiler, wide arches make the car look sporty without going over the top. On the interior the aluminum trimmings along with the half leather sports seat are classy and comfortable for long journeys. The suspension is stiff but solid on country road. Some things that go wrong in this model although these may have been rectified in the 2004 onward models are ignition coil...

Audi A4 , more like AWWW D A bore

Disadvantages: Low,unreliable, tiny tiny boot, big little car

...the Audi A4 Avant has done to me its let me down and now all its minor points are building up , uncle Craig is going to get punched. So lets start with the practicality of the car?.Audi call it an Avant because frankly if they called it an estate they would be sued , the boot is tiny . When you look at the actual width of the car its all wheel arches and lowness , hence the internal room feels like a much smaller car , more of a Golf than a large estate , sorry Avant. This cramped layout extents through the whole car, there are no clever pockets or under seat storage, no deep side pockets and laughably only ONE cup holder. How on earth are you supposed to have a nice Latte with your passenger , one of you will have to risk inner thigh burns, and that is not good. ...The vast majority of A4s are sold with quattro. Quattro A4s with 4 cyl and automatic transmission feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission quattro 1.8Ts are lively enough, while manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick. Lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission, though CVT versions are lazy from a stop. Test 1.8T CVT sedan did 8.6 sec 0-60 mph; test V6 CVT Cabriolet did 7.8. Seamless CVT acts much like conventional automatic, but requires use of manual mode for best performance. Manual transmissions controlled by precise shifters. S4's V8 strong at all speeds; test sedan did 5.6 sec 0-60. Audi A4: Are you a 'Compact Executive'

Advantages: The neighbours think you have gone up in the world
Disadvantages: Noisy, cramped and it doesn't like corners

...with a nicely tactile "click"... it's a shame that they look and feel like they come from a 1990s Golf. Overall I liked the car. Mine was provided by my employer as an interim vehicle; whether I would be prepared to shell out the best part of £22k for one is another question. The neighbours certainly thought I had gone up in the world but I was counting the days until the replacement arrived. And that's the thing about the A4: it's not as good as many cars much cheaper, but it does come with an Audi badge on the front....

Audi A4 2.0 saloon

Advantages: Quality of construction, good looks
Disadvantages: Small interior, engine lacks low-down torque & power

...light switches reflect in the rear view mirror Heating and ventilation Heating and ventilation are fine both the front & rear seat passengers. The climate control works well but the cabin air filter appears to loose effectiveness after just one good dose of diesel fumes, perhaps the filter element must be changed very often. Exterior and lights The paint finish is excellent and appears to resist stone chips. Doors and boot lid close solidly and joint lines are very tight. The headlights produce good high beam and well defined dimmed lighting. The mirrors are just large enough to provide the information required. The rear lights are large and clear. The front apron can catch on dips if one is not cautious. The curved exterior does not aid reversing the Audi A4, but in this regard the previous model (Audi 80) was even worse...

Running a Used A4

Advantages: Build quality, reliability, ride & handling, comfort, practicality, fuel consumption.
Disadvantages: Servicing parts/costs

...was faulty, and the car reverted to a sluggish fail-safe mode designed to prevent harming the engine. On neither occasion was I left stranded, with the faults corrected shortly by the garage. While not enjoying the benfits of a warranty, through buying a used A4 I have enjoyed a standard of motoring unavailble in a £9,000 new car and would recommend the car to someone considering it as a used buy. During the course of owning my A4 I have driven five models from the new BMW 3 series range. My 4 year old A4 compared very favourably to a brand new 320i, and a professional driver friend of mine preferred my A4 to the 3 series. The engines in the 325i and 330i offered obvious performance gains, and the driving dynamics of the rear-wheel drive BMW are obviously different from those of a front-wheel drive car like the Audi. ...Here's my first ever review (again - sorry for posting it in the wrong section before!) I've had my 1998 Audi A4 1.8SE Auto 4 door for 4 months now and it still puts a smile on my face. Whether it's the solid 'thunk' of the doors closing, or the gorgeous tone of the superb 'Concert' stereo, the Audi continues to be a car I will never regret buying. I purchased privately from a family who had cherished the car - it came in superb condition, with low mileage, and a full Audi service history. The light green (Jasper Green) really looks great when I've thrown the sponge on it, and the standard 16" alloys do a good job of setting the car off. It's by no means a perfect car though.
