AUDI'D RICHADA RATE THE A4 2.0 TFSI S LINE?
Advantages: Acceleration. Style. Build Quality.
Disadvantages: Power Delivery. Driving Position. Price. Equipment. Soulless. Fuel Consumption.
...THE GARAGE?
At 4703mm long and 1826mm wide, unless you have a particularly small one, yes it should indeed fit inside your garage.
WHICH SPECIFIC MODEL?
At £27,830 (aren?t these modern day ?Cortinas? getting pricy?) and packing 211bhp, the Audi A4 2.0TFSi S Line, that I am reviewing here, is towards the top of a bewilderingly comprehensive range of models. It is the most powerful and expensive four cylinder front wheel drive A4 saloon.
The A4 range starts at £20,485 for the 118bhp 1.8TFSi and tops out at a whopping £33,700 for the 237bhp 3.0 TDi Quattro (four wheel drive) Executive S Line. With each engine configuration Audi offer a quattro (four wheel drive) variant ? indeed I will be offering an argument for not offering certain models, the 2.0TFSi included, with only front wheel drive.
IN WHAT CAPACITY AM I REVIEWING THIS CAR?
This is...

Audi A4 1.8T S Line 2004
Advantages: Driveability, Good Looks.
Disadvantages: Common Faults (But are not expensive to fix)
...Just upgraded to the Audi A4 1.8T S Line a few weeks ago from my Audi Cab 2.6 V6. I thought I was going to miss the power of the V6, how wrong i was!. The 1.8T with 190bhp is a quick machine and once the turbo kicks in you have hot hatch power in a saloon.
These cars are ripe for tuning by way of ECU remapping, air filters, diverter valves and a number of other products which will increase BHP and torque.
The S Line trim with the extra body deeper grill, spoiler, wide arches make the car look sporty without going over the top. On the interior the aluminum trimmings along with the half leather sports seat are classy and comfortable for long journeys.
The suspension is stiff but solid on country road.
Some things that go wrong in this model although these may have been rectified in the 2004 onward models are ignition coil...

Audi A4 , more like AWWW D A bore
Advantages: Quick , nice door sound , MPG
Disadvantages: Low,unreliable, tiny tiny boot, big little car
...the Audi A4 Avant has done to me its let me down and now all its minor points are building up , uncle Craig is going to get punched.
So lets start with the practicality of the car?.Audi call it an Avant because frankly if they called it an estate they would be sued , the boot is tiny . When you look at the actual width of the car its all wheel arches and lowness , hence the internal room feels like a much smaller car , more of a Golf than a large estate , sorry Avant. This cramped layout extents through the whole car, there are no clever pockets or under seat storage, no deep side pockets and laughably only ONE cup holder. How on earth are you supposed to have a nice Latte with your passenger , one of you will have to risk inner thigh burns, and that is not good. The Low door and roof line also pose a problem, as every time you get in...

Audi A4
Advantages: Acceleration (V6, S4), Automatic-transmission performance (CVT), Steering/handling, Ride (base suspension), Interior materials, Available AWD
Disadvantages: Rear-seat room
...The vast majority of A4s are sold with quattro. Quattro A4s with 4 cyl and automatic transmission feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission quattro 1.8Ts are lively enough, while manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick. Lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission, though CVT versions are lazy from a stop. Test 1.8T CVT sedan did 8.6 sec 0-60 mph; test V6 CVT Cabriolet did 7.8. Seamless CVT acts much like conventional automatic, but requires use of manual mode for best performance. Manual transmissions controlled by precise shifters. S4's V8 strong at all speeds; test sedan did 5.6 sec 0-60.
Averages for manual-transmission test models: 1.8T sedan, 24.8 mpg; 1.8T Avant, 21.5; V6 quattro sedans,18.3-21; S4 sedan, 15.6; S4 Avant, 15.9; S4 Cabriolet, 14.1. Audi says CVT is 10 percent more fuel efficient...

Audi A4: Are you a 'Compact Executive'
Advantages: The neighbours think you have gone up in the world
Disadvantages: Noisy, cramped and it doesn't like corners
...are used to a petrol engine or a smaller diesel. It's not a match for the next generation diesels such as the 2.0TDi in the newer A4s or the TDCi Mondeo. Its not quiet either, but it is impressively economical - 45mpg is easily achievable on every journey, 50mpg is more the norm for a long distance cruise and even 60mpg is not out of the question if you drive very carefully. The tank is huge too, so with 600 plus miles between fill-ups, it feels even more economical than it really is. The handling is a bit sloppy with lots of understeer even at lower speeds. It does not feel reassuring although it never got me into trouble. The ESP is a must as the front tyres squirm as the turbo kicks in, even in the higher gears.
The interior is a bit dull but faultless in terms of quality. The doors close with a reassuring thud and switches operate...

They should get an award 4 it
Advantages: A very solid, stylish and classy car
Disadvantages: A bit sluggish and impractical
...line. Fantastic!
This op is going to go through the ins and outs of the 1997 Audi A4 1.6 Saloon Small Executive...
STYLING * * * * *
How do you describe a brilliantly classy car? The A4 just emits class and opulence like a heater emits heat. The compact saloon body is smooth and all flows well together. From the front the understated but neatly designed front end makes the Mondeo seem quirky and the Vectra boring - well more than it already is! The well-moulded bumpers jut out of each end and give the A4 a curvaceous stance. The interior is also just a fabulous and simple design. The cluttered offerings from BMW and Ford cant match the A4's simplicity. Slide into the A4’s front seats and you’ll be faced with a great, solid fascia, which is very nice to touch, and it passes the Ollie ‘knock’...

Audi A4 2.0 saloon
Advantages: Quality of construction, good looks
Disadvantages: Small interior, engine lacks low-down torque & power
...light switches reflect in the rear view mirror
Heating and ventilation
Heating and ventilation are fine both the front & rear seat passengers. The climate control works well but the cabin air filter appears to loose effectiveness after just one good dose of diesel fumes, perhaps the filter element must be changed very often.
Exterior and lights
The paint finish is excellent and appears to resist stone chips. Doors and boot lid close solidly and joint lines are very tight. The headlights produce good high beam and well defined dimmed lighting.
The mirrors are just large enough to provide the information required. The rear lights are large and clear. The front apron can catch on dips if one is not cautious. The curved exterior does not aid reversing the Audi A4, but in this regard the previous model (Audi 80) was even worse...

Audi A4 1.8SE Auto 4 Door
Advantages: Ride, Build Quality, Image, Looks, Equipment
Disadvantages: Rear Legroom, Running costs, Dull Handling
...control is accurate and easy to use, the electric windows and mirrors operate majestically, and like I said before, the stereo is outstanding. The computer is also excellent and extremely accurate.
All in all, you will enjoy being an Audi driver. You just get the feeling that Audi's command a certain respect. The A4 has an understated quality and image, and it makes you feel special. Next time I'll go for a TDi Avant (if I can afford one), but meanwhile I'll enjoy what I've got.

It looks so different to the modern mush
Advantages: Stunning and different looks, involving drive, solid quality, practical size
Disadvantages: Expensive to buy, equiment spec average, poor dealer experiences
...tech business I work in, where the car you drive so often reflects a lot about your work approach and lifestyle.
I was lucky enough to test-drive a shortlist of 4 cars all circa the £21-24k price tag before choosing. I tested a Saab 9-3 2.0TD Vector Sport, BMW 1-Series 120d SE, Audi A3 2.0 TDI SE.
Overall I loved the Audi A4 Avant and still do, but considering the high cost, image and market expectations of a car like this I feel no shame in being brutal in some aspects of the review.
Looks and street cred - First Impressions
--------------------------------------------------------
The first thing that captured my attention was the new look front-end to the A4. The deceptively long bonnet with an over-sized front-grill slapped in the middle of cleaner and smoother front bumper than any Audi has seen so far is truly eye catching...

Audi A4 Avant Turbo Sport
Advantages: Build Quality, Performance, Style.
Disadvantages: Cost, Handling at very high speeds
...cars. OK, so it is expensive, but it is worth it. We have two Audi's in the household, and I don't think we will ever regret it! Oh, and yes the handles above the seats are oil-dampened!...
