...Pain aux chocolat
Hands up who likes chocolate.
We visited France this year and I consume several of these chocolate bread buns. The better ones coming from bakers in villages not the major supermarkets.
Theses have not been available in England till recent years and I miss the thrill of visiting forieng countries and finding foods I am not familiar with at home, I think these taste better in France than in England any way.
So let me describe a pain aux chocolate also called a chocolatine we found in the South west of France. The translation of the French name literally is chocolate bread.
Pain aux chocolate is made with Brioche dough which is buttery bread dough. This is rolled out to a rectangle then chocolate pieces a bit like chocolate drops, sprinkled on to it. The dough then rolled up Swiss roll like and baked...
...My step-dad bought this back from Sainsbury's because it was reduced to £1.99. However, you would usually pay a whopping £3.99 for this tarte at full price so it's definately not one of those things you buy when you've got a couple of spare change in your pocket.
The main reason I love this tarte is because it's got fruit on it! I don't know whether you've ever tried those custard creme filled crossaints with all the fruit shoved inside? If you have, it's like a tarte version of those; pure bliss!
Okay, bascially, Sainsbury Tarte aux fruit (French for 'Fruit tart obviously) is a buttershortcrust base with a 'creme passisier' filling and fresh fruit, including black grapes (the best kinds!); Kiwi (emm); peaches (oh yes!); strawberries (wahoo!); mangerines (urm..?) and pinneapple (ohh lala).
It comes packaged in a clear pastic...

...♫ "Aux Champs Elysees? Aux Champs Elysees? Au soleil? sous la pluie?" ♫
Do you know the song?
If not, at least you must have heard of the Champs Elysees. French people like to call it "The most beautiful avenue of the world". I am sorry to contradict them, but I have always wondered why. It is in fact quite ordinary.
You'll find lots of cars, bad traffic, nice crowded shops and over-expensive coffee. That's it. Oh no! How could I forget? Among all that, you will find one of the most famous sights in Paris: the Arc de Triomphe.
It was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 in order to commemorate his victories, but wasn't finished until 1836. It is 50 meters tall and 45 meters wide.
I always thought the Arc de Triomphe was nice to look at, but I had never bothered visited it? until last summer.
I had taken my...

Review of Arc de Triomphe
Advantages: Taste good and you can get them in England now Disadvantages: Fattening
...While on holiday in France we ate several pain aux raisins. Translated pain aux raisins means bread with raisins.
Pain aux raisins are a traditional French treat. They are a bit like a currant bun/ Danish pastry. Made with brioche bready dough which is rolled out like pastry. Then a sort of custard is spread over the surface .Next raisins are sprinkled over the dough add the dough rolled up like a Swiss roll. This is cut into slices then glazed and baked .
A pain aux raisin is approximately 8cm in diameter or you can get miniature ones.
Pain aux raisins are a treat at any time of the day. Often served for breakfast or as a snack. I can not remember the price exactly but I think they cost just over a euro which is between 60 and 70 p at the mo.
We have visited France several times and the quality of pain aux raisins does...
...This is the second of an occasional series of reviews of performances of the works of the French composer Jacques Offenbach which are available on DVD. Orpheus in the Underworld was the first Offenbach operetta that I had the pleasure to hear and it has become my ultimate favourite of the genre. I have seen it performed on stage sung in an English translation and with a classical Greek setting by Opera North. I have two versions on CD (one French, one English) and two versions on DVD including the production reviewed here.
OFFENBACH
Jacques Offenbach was appointed conductor of the Theatre Francais in 1850 and began a career of composition of short, light and humorous operettas. In 1855 he bought a theatre on the Champs Elysees in Paris in which he founded his own company, the Theatre des Bouffes-Parisiens.

The Whats, Whys and Wheres

Sometimes, good things can come from sad events. A few years ago, my in-laws died. It was a sad time for the family, and my sister-in-law in particular found clearing and selling the house difficult, as these things often are.
As well as emotionally difficult, selling the house took some time, for a variety of reasons that are unimportant now. However, once the house was sold, we felt a celebration was in order.
Phone calls were made (back in January), and a reservation was procured (for April 20) at Ramond Blanc’s famous hotel and restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, in Great Milton, Oxfordshire. We also turned this into a celebration of my brother...
...A ces masques d'argile,
A ces êtres de sang,
Prisonniers des asiles,
Voyageurs titubant,
Prisonniers du néant?
Aux confins de nos villes,
Ils gisent là, vaquant,
Oubliés de la vie,
Condamnés au tourment
De leur folie subtile
Qui se moque du temps?
A ces masques de haine,
Qui sans peur et sans peine,
Se sont faits le bourreau
D'une âme pure et belle,
Pour jouir d'un ego
Qui se sent immortel?
Condamnés à mourir,
Et ne jamais souffrir,
Que de leur ignorance
Dans l'enfer du silence.
A ces âmes perdues,
Livides et suspendues,
Qui ont fait de leur ciel
Une demeure irréelle?
A ces hommes sans ombre,
Dont le désir pervers
Se nourrit de la chair
Comme ultime pitance?
A ces monstres de sang,
Aux sentiments déments,
Qui d'un regard hagard
Consument nos enfants
De leurs masques blafards.
A la justice...

Review of Poems of Madness
Advantages: Lovely pastry, pleasant aftertaste Disadvantages: Nothing
...Whilst shopping in ASDA today, I saw individual sized portions of French apple tart or Tarte aux Pommes for only 94p. Unable to resist a bargain, I thought I'd give it a try.
As the name suggests, this isn't just any old apple tart - oh no, this is ASDA's own 'Extra Special' Tarte aux Pommes. This is a French apple tart made from a sweet pastry base and topped with soft apple purée, a layer of apple slices and finished off with an apricot flavour glaze.
The tart comes in a clear plastic container, with a gold and white label on the front. The price is clearly marked in the corner, as is the weight (130g), ingredients, nutrition information and storage instructions. You are advised to keep the tart refrigerated below 5°C, but it can be eaten directly from the fridge. The tart is packaged in a protective atmosphere to ensure quality...
Advantages: Privacy, Very nice Staff Disadvantages: Quite expensive- even for a 5 stars
...I have stayed to a few hotels in Mauritius and this surely is one of the best I have ever been to.The hotel is great and is located in a beautiful location.Pointe aux Piments is not as crowded as Grandbaie thus giving it much more privacy. The beach is not as good as the others beaches on the island but i have to admit it the standard is quite high in Mauritius. The bar is located on the beach and the restaurant has some great dishes.Conserning the rooms, my wife and I found it very attractive. With a very good balance between light, privacy and view, it gave it a very romantic outview.I would surely recomend this hotel for honeymoon. The hotel has 2 swimming pool-thou not v big but very nice.Breakfast are served till quite late i.e till 11am, so there is no need to hurry to eat.
However i do have some complaints. There is no music while...
