Vox VT15 Guitar Amp

Advantages: LOADS of features. Good sound. Quite versatile!
Disadvantages: Some may find it confusing to understand, get the sound they want etc. Some presets lack the oomph

...I got this for £155 The Vox VT15 is one of these modeling amps. It has: "VOX Valve Reactor circuit that uses a 12AX7 to produce real tube power amp sound" Just the one 12ax7 tube. Speaker wise it has 1x 8 inch 4 ohm speaker, Vox "original" they say it is. Now for the overwhelming amount of features this lil bugger has! . 22 amp models . 3 banks for each amp model (so 66) . 12 effects . 22 song presets . 4 channels letting you save 2 of your own sounds in each (so 8) . A power level switch at the back so you can turn down the amp down from 15W down to 0.2W. Other features like many amps it has a headphone socket but this one is a 3.5mm one unlike most, the smaller kind. May be more convenient but for this you pay in sound quality via headphones. Mesa boogie triple rectifier

Advantages: 150 watt ALL TUBE 3 channels, Awesome tone
Disadvantages: way too much power for your own good, the price

The Crunch Bunch

Advantages: Simple, Brash, Uncompromising and Fun
Disadvantages: No Flexibility, Recommend modding if single coil bridge pickup used.

...+ Points: Possesses THAT sound. Think Judas Priest 'Rapid Fire' crunch. Little to go wrong electronically if maintained properly compared to multi channel valve amps. Simple no nonsense operation. Brash crunchy sound with a tight metallic edge compared to other old Marshalls 50W proves more useful in small venues, practice rooms and studios -Points: Probably expensive second hand by now Basically a one trick pony Works best with humbuckers (something like an SG sounds sensational) 50W may struggle to be heard if LOUD drummers or other 100W amps share the same stage Here then is my favourite Marshall. 3 12AX7s, 2 EL34s, a solid state rectifier and a big transformer. Hearing is believing

Advantages: Its 100% Mesa Boogie Valve Tone!!!
Disadvantages: It could do with a tad more gain for a good thrash!!

...I’m a previous owner and a massive fan of Mesa Boogie so expect this op to be slightly biased. The “tone” of your guitar sound is a very individual thing and there will always be the Marshall/Mesa Boogie split but this is well worth taking a look at whatever your into. If you have a look at the price of most Mesa Boogie equipment you’ll find yourself picking yourself of the floor shortly after. It’s definitely not cheep, probably the reason Marshall have such a good grip of the market. This one however was at a good price, I found it on the internet for a little under £300 which for a Boogie is a steal! This is a full valve preamp using no solid state technology (other than capacitors and resistors) all your sound goes through 5 12AX7 tubes. A Triaxis isnt just a CNC machine

Advantages: It does all the tone you will ever need

...Where do I start with this……… Well the manual is 48 pages long which gives you an idea of what a job I’ve put myself up for. Well we’ll start with its reputation……. Go to mesaboogie.com for a list of the guitarists that use this, it’s a good sized review in itself. Most notably are bands such as Metallica, Soundgarden, The Police and Sepultura. I know for a fact that Mike Rutherford from Genesis and Mike and the Mechanics uses or used one as this is one of three of his that came up for auction on ebay. A company was selling a total of 600 exGenesis items from there studio and the chance of a Mesa Boogie Triaxis for £500 as opposed to the £1700 they cost new was to good to miss! Immense-A-Boogie

Advantages: Awesome sound
Disadvantages: NONE

...of the rear panel is looking in when its turned on and seeing the 5 12AX7 preamp tubes and the 2 power amp tubes glowing a nice red colour! The speaker fitted in it is fine but I think I may get a little extension cab at some point. It’s a 50 watt 12” and for a 22 watt amplifier (yes 22 watt, it sounds bigger, which is why reviews sometimes take no notice of Mesa Boogies specs and claim it anything up to 60 watt) I think it’s a bit too much especially for bedroom only use, a 10” 25 watt would be more appropriate. It does take a little getting used to, having to leave the amp on standby for a minute after switching on and before switching off, you don’t have to but you will kill your valves eventually if you don’t follow this procedure. Also after it’s been switched off you need to leave the valves to cool...

Review of Mesa Boogie Messa / Boogie Studio 22

5150 will make you loud and heavy

Advantages: More gain than you'll ever need, 120 watts
Disadvantages: Muddy clean tone, two channels but only one set of EQ

...@ 7 O'clock and High @ 4 O'clock) and there is twice as much gain as you'll need. 4-5 O'clock on the pre-gain limits what can sometimes be a noisy amp and with the post-gain on 4 you can blow out the windows!! This channel is very crunchy - great for heavy palm muted riffs and as I mentioned before, run with the right effects in the effects loop you can get a fantastic lead guitar sound. The 4 12AX7 tubes really make this gain channel sing - there is nothing better than a tube amp in comparison to a solid state! The clean channel is where I think this amp is let down. It is not at all bright and the fact that there is only one set of EQ controls for the Clean and Dirty channels means that you can't really tweak it so that both channels sound right.
