Reviews of axis & allies
Another Bargin!
Review of Axis & Allies (PC) by
CliveS
Advantages: Clear, easy to follow rules with interesting film clips
Disadvantages: Once you've got used to the game it can quickly get boring
...I bought Axis and Allies from a bargin bucket and have been addicted ever since! The game gives you the choice of controlling any of the five major powers in world war two (UK, US, Russia, Japan and Germany) - or all of them! The game play follows the board game and there are various patches that can be downloaded via the net to add interest.
The main disadvantage with the game is once you have become used to the tactics of the pre-programmed enemy (eg - you're the axis powers and the computer is the allies) the tactics become easy to prevent. The patches mentioned earlier help give a new focus to prevent boredom at this stage but advanced tactics by the programmer would have been more challenging....

My personal opinion of Axis and Allies
Review of Axis & Allies by
Lord_Karskin
Advantages: Very well balanced rules
Disadvantages: Time factor for games
...Axis and Allies is a very time consuming game. Be sure to allow upwards of 4 hours for a complete game, longer if playing as teams, and I have played in games which have lasted up to 18 hours.
Set in the Second World War it pits two teams against each other with the Axis of Germany and Japan against the Allies of the USA,Russia and Great Britain.
It is a game for adults or older children with 13 to 14 years of age being a minimum due to the length of time spent in playing and the relative complexity of the rules when compared to games such as Monopoly etc.
Note that the rating of average complexity to set up is for games of this type. If compared to a game like Monopoly it is a lot more involved in the setup stage.
Having said that I still recommend this game to anyone interested in strategy. It has a luck element but this is minor...

TOTAL WAR STRETCHES THE MIND
Review of Axis and Allies by
johnstevens
Advantages: the pure playability of this game is one of its good points, the ability to pull of the most amazing stunts
Disadvantages: When you send loads of troops in to get slaugtered by sub-stadered troops is the MOST humiliating thing that can happen to you
...INTRODUCTION
it is the spring of 1942. the world is at war. five world powers are struggling for supremacy. you and your opponents control the military and economic destiny of one or more of these countries. the Axis powers are Germany and Japan. challenging there expansionsim are the Allied powers of the United Kingdom, the USSR ant the United states. You must work together as a team with the country or countries in your alliance. in this game, you'll discover that co-operation is just as important as tactical manovering.
The game is set on a map, with each country contributing to be "protected" by you. in this game you will find out that not only do you have to be a military stratagist but also a prudent economist.=, as without money you can't buy arms, and without arms you can't win the war....

The world at war
Review of Axis and Allies by
liquidburner2002
Advantages: Amount of playable pieces, Controlling very powerful armies the way you want to
Disadvantages: Cost, Can be hard to know wheather you are playing it correctly
...The year is 1942 in the middle of world war 2. Five armies are looking for control the Axis (Germany and Japan) and the Allies (UK, America and Russia) only one can control the world so you can change the result of world war 2. This game is the ultimate in strategy as between 2-5 people can take part either taking control of just one army or the whole of the Allies or Axis. With over 200 pieces included with the game you can tell the action will be frantic (and it is). You take it in turns to place new pieces on the board, move your pieces and attack the enemy. Sounds simple? Well it is not with lots of different ways to attack and move you are spoilt for choice. Each of the countries start with different amounts of money which can be altered as you take over countries belonging to your opponants. Let your allies watch your back...

Excellent For Strategy Beginners
Review of Axis & Allies (PC) by
Atomcreator
Advantages: A Faithful rendition of the popular board game
Disadvantages: Poor A.I.
...Today, there are literally scores of real-time strategy games ( RTS ) to chose from. The graphics and sound are now entering new realms of believability and realism and can be extremely frenetic to actually play.
In my honest opinion, I often find these to be simply TOO frantic to be worthwhile. The endless 'clickfest' which often ensues is not really strategy or tactics as such, but just an exercise in speed of mouse, hand eye co-ordination and maybe having played that particular mission 50 times before so gaining an intimate knowledge of the game map.
AXIS and ALLIES on the other hand belongs to that much-maligned genre, the turn based strategy, and I'd like to point out that I think this is where REAL strategy exists. It is a simple global scale depiction of the events of World War 2, involving the AXIS forces - Germany and Japan...

Company of Heroes - An RTS with brains
Review of Company of Heroes (PC) by
mr_Pagey
Advantages: Great units and enviroment, awesome graphics and fun multiplayer
Disadvantages: High specs required and only 2 playable factions
....
The graphics on this game are fantastic but this is also the games downfall as, unless you have a high spec computer, you will have alot of trouble playing it. The level of graphics and attention to detail far surpasses anything thats previosly been seen an RTS or even a flashey first person shooter. However these flashey graphics arnt just for good looks as they also add to the graphics' realism helps make the gameplay itself more engrossing and intuitive. The game also includes some surprisingly gory displays on occasion; an mortar shell, for instance, can tear men into pieces and send limbs flying through the air.
One problem with the game is the lack of sides as there are only 2 playable factions - allied and axis, however with an expansion out this year you shouldnt let this fact put you off buying it. The first faction - the axis are a more...

Your Finest hour!
Review of Call of Duty (PC) by
yensech
Advantages: Atmospheric, Great AI, stylish and smooth!!
Disadvantages: Slightly too short.
...of players as Allied players scattered across the landscape. The rest of the players will be Axis. Every time an Axis player kills an Ally, that Axis player turns into an Ally. The longer a player stays alive as an Ally, the more points earned. Very fun!!
Call of Duty is a must buy for anyone who has enjoyed a first person shooter. Even if WWII warfare isn't your thing, this is sure to delight you!! From the moment the first bullet is fired , until the last soldier standing, this game will amuse and intensify you, giving a great gaming experience overall!...

Call Of Duty 3 Excellent Game
Review of Call of Duty 3 (Xbox 360) by
dyfz
Advantages: Excellent online gameplay
Disadvantages: Allies have better weapons that Axis
...Excellent first person shoot em up. Still play it every day even though other more popular games have come out. Single player campaign is very addictive and has very good game play. There are loads of different quality's to this game, such as attachments for different weapons, and allies and axis both have a different selection of guns. The story line is excellent and has very good trailers before each chapter, which makes the game more exciting and intense. Call of Duty 3 live has to be the best first person shoot em up game i have every played, playing online against others in different types of games is just supreme. There are different kinds of games such as battle - free for all, Capture the Flag - Two teams trying to catch the other teams flag, War - Have to defend a certain position of the map, and also a few others. As you play...

The best add-on pack yet.
Review of Spearhead (PC) by
atait
Advantages: More MOH, more baddies, more guns!
Disadvantages: More money on graphics cards!!
.... At all times you have a feeling of weight on your shoulders as you endeavour to defeat the Axis attempts to win. The action is from the first person viewpoint. Each mission has its own weapons, and its own objectives. From killing enemies with a sniper rifle to blowing up bridges, infiltrating camps with forged papers to running into a minefield with your machine gun blazing, this is the gutsiest, most playable game of its type.
I won't go into Allied Assault too much, but the essense is "can a single soldier make a difference to a war?" In Spearhead the premise is more realistic. Teamwork is the key, and fighting in a group of skilled warriors makes the game more about covering and being covered, keeping up when you have to, and defending your Captain when failure means death to your group. The weapons are more detailed, and cover...
