Visitations by Clinic
Advantages: Some brief interludes of musical originality
Disadvantages: Lyrics banal and uninteresting
...?Visitations? - Clinic?s fourth full-length album release - is unfortunately going to do nothing to help their already-marginalized status in the ever-widening field of post-punk indie rock. At the release of their debut effort in 2000, they were critically acclaimed as an experimental yet accessible take on their punk influences. Likened to such greats as Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground, it seemed they could do no wrong ? they were a favourite with the late John Peel and even supported Radiohead on a UK tour. But every subsequent release since then has focussed more and more on the worst aspects of their debut, turning out endless versions of the same guitar-driven thrashing monotony, with this newest album being no exception.
The new album?s first single ?Tusk? is one of the highlights of a terminally dull musical experience...

RE Fam Visit
Advantages: Good insight into the Royal Engineers
Disadvantages: Slightly boring in parts
...In counterpoint to the other 'careers office' review above I felt I needed to give a more objective account of what a RE fam visit is like.
It takes place over three days, arriving on the Monday and leaving on the Wednesday. The first day is an introduction to the Corps which is made up of a series of presentations from the staff. For the most part the Monday is a bit slow with most of it being taken up with sponsorship interviews in the evening and the presentations and visits to locations which in truth are quite dull when compared to some of the other activities. You are also required to do the fitness test (pressups, 1.5 miler, situps). The Officer's mess has a fantastic bar and the food is good and the evenings offer plenty of time to talk to the RE recruiting Officers.
Tuesday is focused around two main activities, the plant...

Royal Engineers 'Fam' Visit
Advantages: Among other things you get to make a small bomb
Disadvantages: Travelling to Kent
...I have just come back from the most thorough and captivating career demonstrations of my life. Having finished working for an unsupportive organisation I began to look for a more satisfying career. The combination of advice from others, a personal ‘hunch’ and a few other factors made me look towards the armed forces. More specifically I wanted to know what it was like to be a member of the Royal Engineers.
The familiarisation visit is a three day visit to the Royal Engineers barracks at RSME Brompton. The visit starts at midday on the Monday at Chatham railway station. It finishes after another satisfying meal at around 2pm on the Wednesday. The 50 hour voyage, which involves little sleep, opens the eyes of every visitor.
The aim of the visit is to give all potential Royal Engineer Officers an insight into their...

Visits from the Drowned Girl
Advantages: entertaining
Disadvantages: nothing profound and no great writing
...with his conscience and the burden of the secret. He visits an address on a card in the girl's bag, and slowly works his way into her life - and with every step he takes the possibly of ever coming clean recedes.
We go with him on the journey from unwitting witness to grotesque voyeur. What does it mean to watch someone die? And at what point do you have to take some responsibility for the things you see?
That's the synopsis. Is it any good?
Well. Yes. It's pretty compelling reading, because Benny starts out as such a simple, likeable guy. One man and his dog - the perfect neighbour. Yet as the secret of what he has seen, what he knows, weighs down on him, he becomes an ugly creature. We learn about him through what he learns about the girl. As the book goes on and the writing increases pace, he begins to seem dangerous. Perhaps a life...

LASTS FOR HOURS
Advantages: nice smell, lasts long
Disadvantages: expensive
...In my younger days I was one of the millions of men who was hooked on ?Brut? remember the advert with ?Splash it all over?. Brut was highly popular, and even today is still going strong. And I confess I still wear the deodorant!
But things progress and times change, and ?Brut? is not half as popular as it once was (or even old spice). In have come the designer labels like CK, Obsession, and the likes. But I have discovered a new variety which I am now quite addicted to-Azzaro.
Azzaro is an aftershave range, which you?d be forgiven for not hearing of. I personally had never heard of this aroma, until my wife bought me a set for last Christmas. The set included a bottle of aftershave (spray form), a mini bottle of after shave (liquid form), shower gel, and after-shave cream. Using it for the first time came a few days after...

Brilliant Play
Advantages: Very funny, imaginative text
Disadvantages: too short if anything!
...Friedrich Dürrenmatt creates for this play a fictional town in Central Europe called Gullen (translates to 'manure' from Swiss), and this is where all of the action of the text takes place. The town was once prosperous and bright; but many years have past since then and the economy has decayed to almost nothing, the whole town is facing bankruptcy. Their one ray of hope comes in the form of a visit from a former resident of the city who has since leaving attained high status and vast wealth, as well as a few prosthetic limbs! Her name is Claire Zachanassian and the play opens with the villagers preparation for her visit.
All is not well when Miss Zachanassian arrives - as after a hearty feast she announces that her true reason for returning to her hometown is of a sinister nature indeed. It conspires that in her youth, she fell...

A Great Present for Those With the Travel Bug!
Advantages: The pictures, information and price.
Disadvantages: The order of the cities in the book.
...Quoted from the cover of the book - '501 Must Visit Cities is an invaluable source of inspiration for those seeking to explore the great cities of the world, either in reality or from the comfort of an armchair!'
-Introduction-
501 Must Visit Cities is part of a series of reference books that list the best of the best in a certain subject. It has a one or two page spread on each of the featured cities which include everything from the world's largest cities (Mumbai, India; New York, USA; Tokyo, Japan) to the lesser known and smaller ones (St David's, Wales; Nessebar, Bulgaria; Colonia del Sacremento, Uruguay). No stone is left unturned with regards to the countries covered and it includes all kinds of cities, including those that are probably not safe to visit at present, such as Kabul, Afghanistan.
-Layout-

The Dodos Latest Album Was Nothing Short of Impressive
Advantages: Awesome percussion, easy to relate to, nice guitar
Disadvantages: Poor recording, comes off as average at times,
...The Dodos have been around since 2005, and are receiving increasing critical attention as well as gaining fans throughout North America. Their latest album, The Visiter, is the first album the trio has released with their record label, Frenchkiss Records. The overall feel of this album is one that almost any hipster or anyone else aware of their local music scene can relate to. These guys sound almost exactly like that indie band in your town or city or whatever that always has shows at dive bars, pubs or anywhere else that everyone is so sure is destined to be big one day, completely unaware that there are hundreds of bands that sound just like them in pretty much any city that has an indie scene. The only thing is, these guys are actually making it. The sound of the album is very percussion heavy, and clearly uses more than your...

I said "empathise", not "be silly"!
Advantages: Great story, plentiful special features, good sound and picture quality AND Peter Davison!
Disadvantages: Not quite as good as Pyramids of Mars!
...Peter Davison is my favourite Doctor Who so far. With the new TV series looming fast, I thought it was time to review one of my favourite stories and favourite Doctors in celebration of this event. The DVD I will be reviewing is The Visitation ~ our copy came from www.sendit.com at the bargain price of £9.99, a saving of a tenner on the recommended retail price of £19.99 (it was £14.99 on Amazon).
Released by the BBC, this DVD was released on 19th January 2004 and contains one disc ~ the main feature (a four parter) and the Special Features. If you don?t want to read an outline of the plot then please feel free to jump the next three paragraphs and rejoin me later!
~~~THE PLOT.
This story sees the fifth Doctor (played by Peter Davison) and his companions, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric, landing in seventeenth century England during...
Would You Like One Of My Harpic Mints
Advantages: A few comedy moments worthy of mention
Disadvantages: Not enough comedy moments worthy of mention
...~ ~ The cinema goers in the “mad cabbie” household are myself and my wee ten-year-old daughter, my wife not even being much of a TV fan, (apart from the soaps) never mind the cinema.
So my daughter’s mid-term break from school found us scouring the listings for a decent movie to watch on a promised afternoon trip to our local UCI picture palace.
Eventually this comedy, “Just Visiting”, was selected, if for no better reason than someone else in her class at school had told her it was really funny.
The afternoon didn’t start well, as I had a half price discount coupon that I had secured on the Internet, and the lass at the pay desk simply didn’t have an earthly clue how to enter it through their till and computer system, which resulted in a 20 minute delay in even gaining admittance!
Anyway...
