Thanks to MicroProse UK, you can create some of your own with this superb flight simulation. Did I say 'flight simulation'? In the case of B17, that's a mild understatement. In fact it would cover a minuscule part of this simulation. You see, if you play this game properly you'll spend about five percent actually flying this bomber. ...Just because a game has planes in, it doesn't automatically follow that the game in question is a flight simulation. In the case of B-17, many flight sim fans that I know liken it to a role-playing game in that rather than having to master the mechanics of keeping a giant hulk of metal aloft, the core gameplay feature centres on managing the crew, making sure they survive their tour of duty and hopefully even gain a few skills along the way. For pure flight simulation, the recently-released Battle Of Britain is probably your best bet, but if you want something a little different, great on the eye and likely to push even the most modern PC to it's limits, B-17 is certainly a safe option and even though the missions are a little samey, it is a cracking game.... ...Its here at last B-17 2 the game I have been waiting for.So was it worth the wait-yes. Why? The graphics are the first thing that hit you. the planes look glorious, Engines spit out smoke on start up, planes blow up and a malstrom of flames, you can recognise London and navigate using roads and rivers. The second thing that its you is the depth of game play. Want to fly the plane, no problem, drop the bombs, no problem, tail gunner, its yours. You can even fly the escort planes and if the mood takes you you can fill the bombers full of holes in a german me-109. Crew member get shot and healed (or die),panic, get medals and put out fires. There are quick start missions, historical missions, And two campain modes bomber comander or flight commander(take control of one bomber or all twelve inclueding bomb loads and crew distribution... ...that this simulation has the edge on Combat flight simulator. The dog fights appear to my eye far more realistic, with the aerial battles happening very quickly, blink your eye and you have lost your opponent, blink it again and he is on your tail. As a bonus you can also fly such aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster and the Boeing B17 flying Fortress, but if you want to fly one of these then choose a different simulation such as "B17 The Mighty Eighth" as you will be disappointed with the offering found here. You can not fly either of these aircraft in combat, you can for instance move around the aircraft and become a gunner but there is nothing to shoot at so why bother.
