...Today is the third Mother's day I have celebrated, as my son Harry was born just over a week before Mother's Day in 2006, which was lovely for me! However, I shall always remember it because of Harry being in the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, and wishing he could have been downstairs in the ward with me at my bedside like all the other babies and mums. But this made me think about the Special Care Unit so I thought I would share my experience of having Harry in the Special Care unit for the first 12 days of his little life! Angel care baby monitor set my mind at rest!

Advantages: easy to use, flexible, gives peace of mind

...This product was a definite good purchase! I was quite overwhelmed with how much choice there was in the market as to which baby monitor to buy and I settled on this one as it sounded ideal. The product is a senor pad which detects tiny movements and will alarm after 20 seconds if there has been no movement so, for example, if your baby stopped breathing an alarm would go off after 20 seconds alerting you to this. The sensory pad is a flat square which you place underneath the cot mattress so it isn't bulky or uncomfortable for the baby to lie on. The pad is attached to the monitor which is really easy to use. Waitrose Baby Wipes - caring for baby bottoms and the environment

...Whilst I was pregnant with my son, my husband and I decided that we would use cloth nappies in order to minimise our impact on the environment. At the time it had not occurred to us that most brands of baby wipes are non-biodegradable but when I found out shortly after my son was born I was horrified at the number of wipes I get through each week and the thought of them just sitting in landfill sites. So I set about searching for a good and easily available biodegradable wipe and ultimately found it at Waitrose. These baby wipes come in an attractive looking white packet with grey and blue writing and a small picture of a baby in black and white. ...I have been using Johnsons POP UP SKINCARE WIPES for quite a while now. Not because I have a baby, but they are great for removing make up. And also I have sensitive skin and are great to freshen up with. I paid £1.79 for 72 wipes from Safeway. They also come in a handy 24 pack for £1.39. The packaging is very eye catching. It is of a mother kissing a baby, with Johnsons, baby skincare written across it. To open these there is a resealable flap, and each wipe follows one after the other.(Hense the name POP UP). Sometimes they can get a little caught up and you end up grabbing two or three at one go. I have found with this concept that sometimes the reseal can loose its stickiness and can start drying the wipes out. Just remember to reseal the pack after each use. Total Care for your whole mouth

...This review is on one of the most rewarding, yet most undervalued job that there can ever be. And I've done some! First off, lets' take a look at the disadvantages. The work is not at all valued, which is shown in the number of hours that people work alonsgide the low rate of pay that is offered. Many care homes regardless of whether they are privately owned or are a part of a bigger company, will generally pay the national minimum wage or just slightly higher for health care assistants - a pittance for what they do, which I don't like one bit. However, council run establishments may pay more because after all what else can they do with our money. As noted, another downfall is that of having to do shift work. Starting times vary anything from around 7 in the morning, and finishing times normally at around 10 at night for day...

...Nappy rash is an absolute horror by all accounts - ammonia from urine effects the skin much like a burn would, making it red, sore, and in extreme cases blistered. You can reduce the risks of your baby getting it in the first place by changing nappies regularly, using talcum powder to help them keep dry and by applying cream at the first hint of redness. I've been trying sudo cream, and as my mother bought me a pot of Drapolene, I've given that a go as well. Drapolene comes in 200gram tubs and isn't terribly expensive - prices will of course vary depending on where you shop, but it seems to be priced about the same as any other skin creams. The cream is a pink colour and has a 'medical' sort of smell - probably because the cream has antiseptic qualities. Apply to the bottom and genitalia of your baby - especially if you have noticed...
