Superlatives and the Back To The Future trilogy are rarely far apart. With good reason, too. Heres as complete a science fiction trilogy that youre ever likely to see, one unsullied by unnecessary extra sequels, and instead standing proud as a genuinely terrific trio of films. The highlight? You have to hand that to the first film, one of the most perfectly complete blockbuster movies of the past few decades. Brilliantly constructed and exceptionally executed, its exciting, funny, imaginative and stands up extremely well to repeated viewings. But then so do the second and third films in the Back To The Future trilogy, too. The second is arguably the most disjointed, but then it has the most narrative work to do. Picking up directly after the first movie, it covers a heck of a lot of ground, and, in spite of one or two problems, its nonetheless a compelling movie in its own right. The third, meanwhile, is an underrated delight, that tails the trilogy with exceptional style. Accompanying the films is a collection of extras that genuinely dig a bit deeper, and most notably include the infamous test footage of Eric Stoltz in the role of Marty McFly, before he was replaced by Michael J Fox five weeks into production. Crucially, though, the Back To The Future trilogy has never looked better. V for Vendetta is, like its author's later Watchmen, a landmark in comic-book writing. Alan Moore has led the field in intelligent, politically astute (if slightly paranoid), complex adult comic-book writing since the early 1980s. He began V back in 1981 and it constituted one of his first attempts (along with the criminally neglected but equally superb Miracleman) at writing an ongoing series. It is 1998 (which was the future back then!) and a Fascist government has taken over the UK. The only blot on its particular landscape is a lone terrorist who is systematically killing all the government personnel associated with a now destroyed secret concentration camp. Codename V is out for vengeance ... and an awful lot more. V feels slightly dated like all past premonitions do. The original series was black and white and that added to the grittiness of the feel while the colouring here in the graphic novel sometimes blurs David Lloyd's fine drawing. But these are small concerns. Skilfully plotted, V is an essential read for all those who love comics and the freedom, as a medium, they allow a writer as skilled as Moore. The graphic novel contains all the V series plus two additional stories concerning V that were originally considered "interludes". This edition also contains an essay from Moore dating from 1983 explaining the creation process. For any comic fan it's a must-have. --Mark Thwaite

In the late '60s, Barry (Dave Hill), Paul (Jim Lea), and Charlie (Don Powell) are musicians who are barely making a living playing pub dates, weddings, and socials backing up egocentric vocalist Jack Daniels (Alan Lake). One night, the boys find themselves opening for a ghoulish show band called The Undertakers, and a prank played on their lead vocalist, Stoker (Noddy Holder), backfires and leads to a car chase which lands both groups in jail for the night. After a long night of thinking, Barry, Paul, and Charlie decide that they have no future with Daniels, and bring new pal Stoker aboard as their singer. Calling themselves Iron Rod, the new quartet clicks musically, but manager Ron Harding (Johnny Shannon) doesn't care for their new style and stops booking the group. Robert Seymour (Tom Conti), a marketing man from a wealthy family who thinks there's quick money in pop music, enters the picture and informs the band that he can make them major stars. Wary of Seymour but eager for success, the group signs a new management deal, and after Seymour changes their name to Flame and gives them an image makeover, the band scores a hit record and is soon playing a series of sold-out shows.
