A Good Back up Tool

Advantages: Massive 250GB HDD for under £40.00
Disadvantages: Not that portable.

...I Brought this External harddrive from Maplin for Just £39.99 Yes £39.99. I Brought this to keep all my back ups and Copys of Music, Videos and softwares so that i will allways have a safe copy out side of my computer and CDs and DVDs. The harddrive has a std 2 year warranty so if it goes wrong within 2 years of buying the item Western Digital will try to resuce all your data and will replace your harddrive for free. The harddrive in Plug and play so it does not require a Driver or software to work and requires a 12V AC Asapter which comes with the harddrive. The harddrive works with USB2.0 which can Trasfer data at around 480MPBS. The harddrive is not that portable as it has to have a power supply and is a little big and weighs a bit. But the harddrive is great vaule for £40.00 and is ideal to keep back ups of pictures...

...A few months before Christmas my laptop decided to be an utter git and my hard drive crashed. I lost hundreds of photo's, my whole itunes library and two years worth of uni work. After getting a new hard drive fitted I laboriously set about uploading all my music onto it and pleading with itunes to let me download all my purchased music (all £150 worth) again for free, managed to find some old back up copies of photo's and work as well. All was not lost. ...Windows Backup from Microsoft is the included back-up facility that comes with windows 95 & 98. As a back up facility it is quite good. It does what it needs to do but is lacking in any real power. I have found it a particularly good means of backing up inportant data on to a CD-Rom. As a basic backup program it serves its purpose but no more. It is not suitable for backing up the windows system as the windows operating system is constantly changing while you are working and if it tries to back up system files that are being used it can cause the machine to freeze up or crash. Not too bad for a backup utility if you just want to store or archive data....

Protect your computer and modem from power surges, brownouts and blackouts

Advantages: Cleans and regulates the power to your computer
Disadvantages: Instructions can be a little hard to follow

...I decided to get this piece of equipment after having a spate of power failures and power lags over a while. Most of these were momentary, which would cause my computer to lock up, but not to switch off completely. I was sure this was not doing it any good. Others were prolonged which caused my computer to just switch off. The BackUPS Pro protects your computer with a battery backup, so if the power fails, the battery will takeover and your computer will be shutdown safely automatically after a specified number of minutes. With a machine with quite a lot of cards, and a 3 year old 17 inch monitor, the battery will last for about 10 minutes, or up to 30 minutes if the monitor is switched off. Your equipment is also protected from power surges by the UPS which means that if such a thing happens your equipment should be safe....

Back up against PC disasters!

Advantages: Reasonably priced, effective, simple to use
Disadvantages: Boxy & I can't get incremental back ups to work.

...However you use your PC, make sure you take back ups! A few days after we moved into our house, we were burgled and all our electrical goods were taken. Amongst these items was my laptop on which I had a database of animal pedigrees which had been built up over 6 years. Yes I had backups on CD, but of course I had not taken them as often as I should have... Overall it took me a week of full time work to recreate my data from paper sources. So yes we should all back up our work. But if you have a lot of photos on your computer, or a lot of music, you are dealing with very large files and it can get very fiddly saving files to lots of separate CDs or having to zip them all up and then save to disk. The Freecom Mobile Hard Drive is a plug in hard disk that just plugs into your computer via a USB cable and saves vast amounts...

Great as a back up in a networked office.

Advantages: Reliable and cheap

I would honestly recommend any office or work environment that uses multiple networked computers with only one printer to have one of this type of monochrome snail like (when compared to modern printers), but very reliable printer as a back up. It is all well and good that your main printer is on a contract, which during working hours ensures the engineer is on a four-hour call out. But you try telling your printer that, they have a mind of their own, they will fail late in the evening or during the weekend. Back up often

...at work, but none so loud as this! What the hell, I thought, I’ll just play background music to drown it out. Things went OK for the first few weeks – got online, played a few games, etc – then I had a complete hard drive failure. At least PC World kept their word and duly replaced it free of charge under their 12-month warranty. The system still has 10Gb of free memory, but it seems to have got gradually slower and slower – despite the use of de-frags, Norton utilities programs, etc. It also hangs up occasionally for no apparent reason, even rendering ctrl-alt-delete useless. One plus point is the USB port on the front of the hard drive which is very handy for downloading the photos (there is also one in the back). Another dubious plus point is that it teaches you to back up often – I would not be surprised...

...and Derby. Granted, with the exception of Ipswich (who with respect aren't really one of the big boys but ARE having a terrific season) none of these sides are pushing for Europe. But then, none of the first division sides will be either.
