I love My Tropical Friends

art1954
Advantages: great hobby
Disadvantages: none
....
[] Fluorescent Light…Needed to provide the right environment for the fish as well as helping the growth of the plants.
[] Heater Thermostat…This allows a constant water temperature of 25c.
[] De-Chlorinator…This is to improve the water quality of the tank.
[] Water Test Kit…To test the water once a week so that you can see your fish are being kept in a properly controlled environment.
[] Gravel…. Needed to cover the base of your tank and off course to bed your plants in.
[] Plants…You can have either live or plastic plants, it’s a matter of personal taste.
[] Decoration…. This can either consist of wood, rocks, or ornaments or a combination of the three.
[] Fish Food…. You can get flakes, hardened small blocks or live food, again it’s personal preference.

Fish Tank Cleaner Mayhem
Review of Aquaclear 200 Filter to 50gall by
robinson1010
Advantages: erm
Disadvantages: Non restaring, Poor casing
...While it's difficult to argue that Aquaclear powerfilters are popular, and are decent products, they do have a number of problems, IMO. The plastic casing is not particularly durable, and the covers in particular are quite easy to crack. More significantly, the AC filters that I've used often had difficulties in self-priming. That is, when the filters are unplugged or the power goes out, they may or may not automatically restart when power is reconnected. Needless to say, this can cause problems, and I've found a tank where the power had been off very briefly several hours before I got home... the filter had not been functioning since then, and the impeller and motor housing was very hot from running dry for so long. Luckily, no fish were harmed. While they are decent filters, I hesitate to recommend them because of this...

The truth about Tropiquarium 55!
Review of Hagen Tropiquarium Range by
sarahjfish
Advantages: All included, superb filtration, well contained unit.
Disadvantages: Large filter, hard to repair, difficult to modify
...I've had my Hagen Tropiquarium 55 for well over three years now and it's been a great little tank on the whole.
The smallest of the tropiquarium range the 55 measured just 52cm wide x 25cm deep x 38cm high, holding approximately 40 litres or 10.5 gallons which is more than adequate for a a small array of tropical fish like guppies etc., and is small enough to tuck away inconspicuously if not your main feature tank.
As the tank is a complete unit the Trio 2000 filter, a three stage biological, chemical and optional filtration unit giving an excellent standard of filtration, the 100W tronic heater and the light housed in the hood (behind a protective cover that can be removed for replacing the bulb.) are all run of a single plug running from the tank hood. Saves on socket space and means no unsightly wires dangling everywhere...

MARINA Mermaid aquarium kit.
Review of Marina Mermaid Aquarium Kit by
DonnaShelly
Advantages: ..............An ideal starter aquarium..............
Disadvantages: ............Girly pink and only 17 Litres........
...My daughter choose this tank as her first starter fish tank, drawn to the girlyness and cuteness of it, unlike other tanks i have seen before it is simply targeted at girls! It is designed as an 'enchanting magical underwater world'.
The kit comes complete with:
~ 29.5 x 19 x 32 cm square glass tank (17L).
~ Pink clear plastic feet and matching cover.
~ Elite mini internal filter (with venturi valve to add bubbles/oxygen and water movement)....... (in pale pink!).
~ Aqua plus 30ml water conditioner (to remove chlorine and harmful metals in tap water).
~ Cycle 30 ml biological supplement (to help the tank to cycle/filter to mature and reduce levels of ammonia/nitrate)
~ Nutrafin max flake food.
~ 1.5kg pink gravel.
~ Mermaid ornament (a Mermaid cuddling/swimming with a seahorse).
~ Comprehensive instruction guide / aquarium care...

FISHY FISHY FISHY
Review of Member Advice on Setting Up An Aquarium by
LICARUS
Advantages: lovely relaxing hobby
Disadvantages: can be expensive and time consuming. It is hard when your fish die sometimes.
...floors.
You will also need at least 3 plug sockets if not 4 within easy distance of your tank, an extension underneath the tank is NOT a good idea, remember all the water?? The tank will need to be easily accessible too, for cleaning, feeding and setting up purposes. Those ones set up in the walls may look nice but I wouldnt fancy doing a water change or catching the fish! This also leads me to say, make sure your home and your fishtank are covered for damage on your insurance.
~~~HOOD/TOP FOR THE TANK~~~
As well as serving the purpose to house your lighting, air pump and any other acessories the hood reduces evaporation from your tank, and stops the fish jumping out, keep your top/hood in place even for the shortest periods, I didn't and lost one of my favourtie fish when it jumped out, it also makes your tank look finsished.
All...
Nice piece of furniture - not suitable for fish
Review of Biorb by
rosiem78
Advantages: Looks nice - good for a water garden
Disadvantages: Not suitable to keep fish in
...Biorbs are nice to look at and I can understand their appeal, but please read this and take note as they are not suitable / ethical for keeping any kind of fish.
They are better than a standard goldfish bowl as at least a biorb comes with filtration, but to be honest, that's about where the positive aspects end.
The set-up advice for the tank is not good as it advocates using a fish to cycle the tank (I think this was covered in another review - so I won't go into it here), but this is unnecessary. A fish in an immature tank is constantly burned by its own ammonia and there is a far easier and less cruel method to mature a tank.
Anyway, I'll move on to the main reason I am against biorbs (and other orb shaped fish tanks)....
All fish, regardless of their type have a lateral line. Fish use this to constantly send and receive...
!!!!!Oil Central Heating!!!!!
Review of Central Heating Installation by
honestlyopen
Advantages: Don't need British Gas
Disadvantages: A little bit of space lost in the garden.
...as to where the oil tank is placed, so it went at the bottom of the garden (which will be covered by trellis ONE DAY). The Combi boiler has been put into a small room I had uner the stairs and never used apart from hoarding stuff. In all i have 9 radiators and instant hot water 24/7.
The main advantage with oil is because you need to fill the tank up, you actually pay for the oil before you use it. So there's no bill landing on my doormat on 27th December after another expensive christmas with the gas fire and heating on.
Last year I filled my tank once costing £157.00 in March, and i expect to re-fill in a month or two.
Oh Yeah there's also NO STANDING CHARGES....
The Juwel of all Tanks
Review of Juwel Rio 240, Fish Aquarium by
sally.jenkins
Advantages: Looks fantastic and is a great showpiece
Disadvantages: Time it takes to do a water change!
...) then a smaller tank might be better.
The lighting system was a new idea to me, in as much as there is no cover glass for the tank. The lights beam straight on to the water. Juwel say that this is to provide more natural light than you'd normally get with a cover glass. The lights themselves have special seals to prevent them getting wet inside, but this does mean that when the bulbs go you'll have to purchase Juwel replacements. Both bulbs run off the one switch, so there's not an option either to wake the fish up slowly or put them to be gradually: both lights have to go on together. My fish don't seem to be bothered by this, and to make things easier I have put their lights on a timer. The only downside I can find to having the lights shine directly on the water is that it does produce more algae than I'd like, so I have limited their light...
Review of Wargasm (PC) by
Tanthalas
Advantages: Graphics, gameplay, explosions, gore, and a bloody big Commanche
Disadvantages: What the hell is up with those controls?????
..., and the debris scattered over a wide area, smoke rising from the remains, blown backward by the blast. Infantry are run down, their blood covering the tank driver's visor, then being hastily wiped away by automated wipers. Buildings explode and collapse in on
themselves. Wargasm is carnage with class, honed to perfection for the modern world.
There are four different types of gameplay in Wargasm - training, instant action, War Web and mutiplayer. The training missions are excellent. You are helped through simple missions by a voice over the radio. You blow up tanks, infiltrate an enemy base, attack enemy infantry, get shot at by pillboxes, drive through minefields - and all before you get onto anything 'serious'!
Instant action is just that - instantaneous blasting, dodging, shooting, running, killing, etc. The levels are presented...
Roll up, relax and enjoy.
Review of Tropical Fish Care by
Kingkarliii
Advantages: Better to watch than the repeats on T.V
Disadvantages: Expensive, especially when they get ill.
...and come with different wattage, the smaller the tank the lower the wattage.
Thirdly you will need a filter there are two main sort of filters, under-gravel filters and Internal filters. Under-gravel filters are probably the best, because they take the muck from the bottom of the tank, whereas an internal filter works by drawing in the water from the centre of the tank.
Fourthly you will need some sort of lighting to bring out the lovely bright colours of your fish. There are good variety of lights available, some to bring out the colours some to help plant growth and some for the nocturnal fish that don't like bright light.
Right now that I have covered the boring bit, lets put it all together. Firstly make sure that the tank is clean and has no cracks in. Then take your choosen substrate i.e gravel or sand and gently pour it into the tank...
