Advantages: beautiful scenery, hospitable people, delicious food, fun things to do in the capital
Disadvantages: some areas can be dangerous.. monsoon weather won't be suitable for most blighty's

...Wow the sheer amount of terrible and quite condescending if not downright insulting drivel that gets spouted about Bangladesh makes me wonder two things: Are they talking about the same country? 2) Can people who have not properly visited the country not comment. I am ethnically Bangladeshi - well my parents are from there and we have house in the capital, I am fortunate in the respect that I grew up with both cultures fully having spent several months a year and a gap year working in dhaka - the capital. I did however grow up by and large in london with all the luxuries of living in a 1st world country, private school, drama school etc.. so I have an insight into living in both countries and environments, First of all there is no denying it is a poor country, a heavily overpopulated society where literacy levels are barely scraping...

Bangladesh... my origin

Advantages: My Nan lives there, I can't wait to see her!
Disadvantages: It makes you so depressed to see so many people struck by poverty...

...Everyday I wake up, and I think about my origin, my mother and father were both born in Bangldesh, and I have only been there twice in my life. Both times seeing things that have really changed me and the way I think. I have to say I am a very vain person, I raise up to buy Gucci purses and I want all the nicest perfumes in my collection (latest one would be dior addict ar givenchy both smell divine!) but I don't really think that there are thousands and thusands of people suffering in Bangladesh. The Gucci purse I want is about 150 pounds, but in bangladesh a yearly income is less than that. It makes me sick yo the stomach to think all the times I have moaned that I don't have enough or my friends get more than me, when there is people in Bangladesh, just wanting the smallest bit of bread or just a penny for food. Advantages: seeing my family there
Disadvantages: getting depressed by the sight of many people struck by poverty.

New Dhaka Daze

Advantages: Convenient if you happen to work there.
Disadvantages: Er, there's just not much there.

...is not Asia's nightlife capital. At the north and south extremes of Gulshan, there are markets which are good for fabrics, vegetables, meat, and stationery. But, you'd hardly to go Dhaka just to buy those. There are also a few restaurants here - things change rapidly so I'm reluctant to give names, but you can generally find good Indian, Thai, Korean and Chinese eating places. The price, relatively speaking, is usually very cheap. There are also a couple of western-style, oft frequented by some foreigners, but I personally didn't like the food there. Finally, in New Dhaka, there's Banani. There are houses, shops and a couple of restaurants there. That's it. There's nothing else to say about Banani - oh yes there's a bank there. It would take much more time to describe Bangladesh, or even Dhaka, properly but here are a few more...

Got There In The End...

Advantages: Some nice crew, good food
Disadvantages: Poor reliability, punctuality, lounge and airport service.

...Just recently I experienced something that I never thought would happen: A Bangladesh Biman Airways flight was on time! Now before you think I am being unnecessarily sarcastic, I had previously been on four Bangladesh Biman flights that were not on time. And I'm not talking about being half an hour late. One was delayed over twelve hours and another two were delayed over six hours. One was only four hours late. There was one other flight that I could have taken, but it was cancelled. Talking with others at the airports I discovered that, just as other airlines have "frequent flyers", Biman have "Do-all-possible-to-avoid-ers". These are people who would fly via the ends of the earth to avoid Biman - not because they don't like the staff or the service, but because they want to know what time they will leave and arrive. Review of BIMAN - Bangladesh Airlines

From Bangladesh to Britain.

Advantages: Strong characters. For a 1st novel, it's good.
Disadvantages: Can get a bit tedious in places.

...'Brick Lane' is one of those books I find will be a little difficult to write about. It's hard to know how to describe this book. The reason being is that the characters are so complex. There's only a few of them, but they are quite deep people. Monica Ali, the author, was herself born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and grew up in England. this is her first book. The book is a story of Nazneen, her family and friends. Nazneen was born in Bangladesh in 1967. She had a troubled start coming into the world, feeding, and was just a sickly child. Fast forward to Tower Hamlets, London in the year 1985. Nazneen is now a young woman, 18 years old. She has gone through an arranged marriage with a man 20 years her senior, Chanu. And they immigrated to London. There's not much this poor girl could do really. Her life was planned out...
