An English Man & An Irish Woman walk into a hotel

...This is my second Hotel review in a matter of days, but I'm still trying to find the balance of useful detail and boring everyone to sleep. In September 2006 My Wife and I (it's starting to sink in now!), got married at the Clandeboye Lodge in Bangor Northern Ireland. A1 Lecturers...I don't wanna leave!!!

Advantages: Friendly students and staff, fantastic lecturers
Disadvantages: small uni, small library (social Science) Geared up towards live in students

Fancy a relaxing weekend?

Advantages: Peaceful location

...I recently stayed at this hotel, as I needed a break, but didn't want to go too far away. This hotel is situated a few miles outside Bangor, on the Clandeboye estate, which provides a very peaceful background to the hotel. It's very easy to find, it's just off the main Bangor/Belfast dual carriageway, and the hotel is signposted. Once you reach the hotel, it looks very small, and looks almost like an old traditional schoolhouse, even though the hotel was only built in 1994. There is also ample car parking around the hotel and while it is a few miles out of the town, a taxi from Bangor train station shouldn't be too expensive. Upon walking into the hotel, you pass through a bar/dining area, one of the few complaints I have with the hotel, but the staff are all very helpful. Quiet, but good for outdoor sports

Disadvantages: Limited shops and night life

...I have been at Bangor Uni since September 1999 when I started a Masters course in Ecology. I arrived very late, had never been to Bangor and knew nothing about the place!! The first thing you notice (unless it's raining!!) is that this is a beautiful city. The backdrop of the Menai Straits and Snowdonia National Park is breathtaking, and this is a good place to study if you like outdoor pursuits like climbing, walking, sailing, diving etc. etc. The high street has enough shops to get you by: clothes shops (a few, but no M&S so stock up on undies!!), a few restaurants, sports shops, a couple of record shops and the usual for a smallish High Street. The night life is limited to cafes, bars, a cinema, a theatre, lots of pubs, one club in town and the student's union, which has a range of different nights. Don't come here if you are...

...Bangor was my second choice and since my a-levels came in below par I spent 3 years at Bangor university, sorry, University of Wales, Bangor, and it was amazing. I'll talk you through the bits that I found out in those years (1996-9), which may be a tad out of date but may not. The City Yes it is actually a city as it has a cathedral. Most of the population would seem to be made up of students and retired people, who are mostly very nice. Bangor has pretty good shops for the size, and its high street is very very long. It's very compact and you'd be surprised how quick it takes to get anywhere. Unless of course you have to go uphill in which case you will take lots longer. The night life Hmmm. Student Union

Advantages: Very close to science buildings, fairly cheap
Disadvantages: Not open early enough, staff could cheer up a bit!

...When I say student union I'm going to be generally talking about the facilities available during the day. I have limited experience of the night time entertainment! The student union building is located on Deinol Road, Bangor. It is mainly used by science students, (only about 50 yards from the chemistry department) as it is a bit far away down a steep hill for use by arts students. It has a useful shop, not the cheapest for stationery, but good for sweeties and drinks! The shop opens at 8.30am. It is fairly well stocked and sells a wide multitude of things. There is also a campus branch of the Natwest, and a cash machine. Penrhyn Castle - no buggies allowed

Advantages: A fantastic example of times gone by
Disadvantages: Families with small children could be limited to the actual castle.

...people lived and how they managed. There are also a number of exhibitions around the castle including, the railway and dolls museums. There are adequate toilet facilities, a fully stocked typical National Trust shop and tea room. Penrhyn Castle is easy to find as it is about two miles from Bangor. I travel along the A55, take the Bangor turn off and then follow the signs for the castle. The only down side to the visit is if you have small children/toddlers, as buggies are not allowed in the hall and you are not told this. It is written on the back of the leaflet given to you when you pay to enter the grounds. Also, the play /adventure areas are more for older children....

I was contacted by paul out of the blue after filling a form on a few websites several weeks ago. he asked if was interested in a survey to calculate the size and cost of my move as i was moving to another area in bangor. three days later a wonderful lady named eve came over and spent the afternoon going through the survey (packing options etc) over a few cups of tea! the price for my move was very competitive but the whole service offered by the removal group was the key value that made me side with them. The move itself went as well as can be expected, the removal company were polite and couteous. i would deffinately recommend the removal group to anyone interested in moving...

Caernarfon Castle

Advantages: Beautiful full castle
Disadvantages: None

...of course remains spectacular. It is possible to walk along the battlements to gain a better view of the surrounding area and town. Caernarfon itself is a lovely town full of interesting shops and quaint alleyways. Further afield for those wishing to spend a longer time there is Snowdonia, Anglesey and the beautiful Lleyn peninsula to explore. Admission now costs £4.20 for Adults and £3.20 for concessions. A family ticket costs £11.60 and covers 2 adults and 3 children. Sadly trains no longer go to Caernarfon so the nearest station is Bangor 10 miles away. Buses are every 15 minutes or so from Bangor (excluding Sundays)....
