Avoid it Sweetie Daaahling
Review of Sky Bar (Vienna) by  Morgenhund

Advantages: good daiquiris
Disadvantages: Pretentious, poor service, pricey, some poorly made cocktails

...The Sky Bar has, to give it its due one of the finest views in Vienna. Situtated on Kärntner Straße around 100 metres from the Stephansdom, it is on the eighth floor, with access via two lifts, the first of which goes up the front side of the Dom Gil/Amadeus department store and then after a 25 metre walk, the second lift takes you up to the Sky Bar and Barbaro's Italian Restaurant. The Sky Bar has got a reputation for being really little more than a place to be seen, with poor service and sniffy staff. I have been several times, both during the day, during the evening, and last thing at night. By day the place is very quiet save for a few Viennese housewives, in for a coffee, and wanting to be seen, or for a few of the "It Girls" frantically writing an overdue submission for their degree. The lavout possibly makes the Sky Bar... Read review

Why do we all like music
Review of Everything that starts with W ... by  water-witch

Advantages: N/A
Disadvantages: N/A

..., called Allegro Barbaro. Basically, this means fast and barbaric! It isn?t to everybody's taste, Bartok, as his music is discordant, rhythmically complex and modern sounding. Whenever I practised it the baby kicked quite a lot, but I didn't give it much thought. After the exam, which was before Caroline was born I forgot all about the piece and the music disappeared into the ether of my music room. Some years later, we moved house and the music turned up. Excitedly I rushed to the piano to give it the once-over. Hardly had I started when Caroline, then aged 9, came running downstairs and into the room. "Shut up, Mummy, stop it! You know how much I hate that piece!?" I was, as you can imagine, somewhat stunned. I had not played that piece of music since I was 7 months pregnant with her, and yet she knew it, recognised it and had very... Read review

Great if you want something a little different
Review of Kusadasi (Turkey) by  jambo6

Advantages: Warm, friendly and a little different
Disadvantages: The hard sell might put off the more timid

...seemed to be a delicious aroma in the air along with a cacophony of Turkish music, making it a nice area to have a beer or coffee. There are charming little girls trying to sell roses to the punters, that is until the waiters shoo them and they hiss like cats. On the subject of cats, numerous skinny specimens patrol the pavements with an air of total aloofness – unless you have any food on the table. Unfortunately the flies have the same attitude. Leading up the left side of the Karavanserail from the promenade, is the pedestrianised Barbaros St. Don’t worry, I’m not going to describe every street, but this one gets a mention as it’s home to the towns internet café. Its first main intersection is with Saglik Cadesi, worthy of note because if you hang a right you’ll find the aptly named Bar Street, centre... Read review

The incredible Anouar Brahem
Review of Conte De L'incroyable Amour - Anouar Brahem by  gantzgraf

Advantages: Superb follow-up to Barzakh, Rich, Inventive
Disadvantages: None

...formation. Percussionist Lassad Hosni, from the previous album, makes a second apparition. We then have Barbaros Erkose on the clarinet and Kudsi Erguner on the nai flute. Once again, all tracks are written and composed by Anouar except for 2; these being Hayzak and Peshrev Hidjaz Homayoun who were respectively written by Kudsi Erguner and Veli Dede. Etincelles is a duo between oud and clarinet. Here, breaking from his conventional method, Anouar provides a backdrop for Erkose's clarinet. The sound is close to what would become Astrakan Cafe, 8 years later. Erkose's clarinet is like a giant ondulating theater curtain caught in a gust of wind. It is magical. Ranging from a soft murmur to a full bodied exclamation, you can feel the sound penetrating through your body. The 3 following tracks are Barzakh-esque in tone. But here... Read review

An electrifying blend of folklore
Review of Khomsa - Anouar Brahem by  gantzgraf

Advantages: Unique musical vision. Evocative. Masterful.
Disadvantages: Absolutely None

...In 1991, Anouar Brahem, Bechir Selmi and Lassad Hosni created the world's most powerful folklore album: Barzakh. A year later, Anouar Brahem would release Conte de l'Incroyable Amour with Lassad Hosni, Barbaros Erkose and nai flutist Kudsi Erguner. He favored a trio formation for Barzakh, a 4-man formation for Conte de l'Incroyable Amour. In 1995, Brahem would release Khomsa with a total of 5 other musicians. Khomsa would be an epic 6-man formation. Khomsa marks a slight change in the Brahem repertoire. Barzakh and C.D.L.A were both very traditional and geographical in their approach. That being said, these featured influences from all over the world and were groundbreaking pieces of work. Khomsa brings together 13 compositions by Anouar Brahem and 3 by Galliano, Danielsson and Christensen; all these compositions played a part... Read review
