...This review has been moved to Member Advice Category. Please read and rate there as this will soon be permanently removed by Ciao.
Many thanks to the members of Ciao for pointing out this was an unsuitable category and for letting me know how to have this changed.
Since my opinion about the Belkin USB Hub I have been asked by a great many Ciao members what barcode scanning is, how it works and what I use it for.
With these questions in mind, I have decided to write this opinion to cover the various equipment I use. I will not dwell as usual on the technical stuff as you already know I myself don’t understand half of it anyway. Instead I prefer to cover the basics and the various applications they have.
I will start by explaining why I have bar coding apparatus. I run my own business on the internet. I also use various...

Barcode Scanner That Works
Review of Symbol SPT 1550 by
Dexter2102
Advantages: Extremely User Friendly
Disadvantages: The "BEEP" when you confirm a scan
...This Symbol SPT 1550 is the best scanner around in an area flooded with similar products.This device is extremely lightweight compared to its competitors and ease of use is second to none.The scanner itself allows you to read barcode labels with extreme ease some scanners on the market ensure you have to be right next to the barcode for it to register but with the Symbol SPT 1550 it allows you to scan from a distance and scan hard to reach barcodes.The product also has touch screen GUI making it extremely user friendly the further you venture into the menus and sub menus you can never get lost due to the aptly named home icon.In terms of memory for this device i once scanned 1200 items in an initial audit i was doing and it had no problems in terms of slowing up....

What's next!? A built in retina scanner!
Review of Microsoft Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader - keyboard , mouse by
Markp_00
Advantages: Built in fingerprint reader, tons of shortcut key, comfy!
Disadvantages: Mouse is pretty standard for a wireless optical mouse
...the parts, but fortunately for us, it turned out to be alot easier than you would expect. As a side note I would greatly advise that anyone looking into buying a computer, to do it that way, even if your not a computer genius, as it really is very straight forward and works out tons cheaper!
When it came to the basics like keyboard and mouse I wasn't particularly bothered about which I got, but after seeing the options available, like fingerprint scanners I soon weeded out the ones that just would not do! Eventually I was left with Microsoft's Optical Desktop with fingerprint reader (Manufacturer's part code: BZ5-00006)
~~~~~Installation~~~~~
Extremely easy to install, you just plug the USB cables in and it does pretty much everything else for you. Follow the on screen instructions and you'll have no problems!
Ooh! one thing I should...
E-safe Desktop - Makes desktops Safe
Review of E-Safe Desktop by
Hellzone
Advantages: 3 great security programs, Firewall, Anti-virus, Software control, Good for basic and Advanced users
Disadvantages: Firewall not so good for basic users
...and can filter out certain content in the name of web address’s or websites.
This firewall is not very good for the simple users but it’s easy to learn what your doing and when you do know what your doing, it’s even easier to go further.
The Final security feature in this package is the Anti-virus software, just like the most popular anti-virus software packages, this one has virus definition updates available and also has a Auto-guard, which scans programs and files as their changed or accessed.
It also has an on-demand scanner that allows you to scan paths of your choice and even files.
And as well as all these features, E-safe desktop is free of charge, Well worth the download.
E-safe Desktop is a great security package and is definitely worth the download, with it’s range of features and ability...
Beepless bonuses and barcoded bunce
Review of Fact Finders by
netstation
Advantages: Almost something for nothing
Disadvantages: Adds about ten minutes to a shopping trip
...’s in the box?
A Scanner, not surprising really! This is a hand held unit about the size of two cigarette packets placed end to end. It has a small LCD screen, number and function keypads, and a built in barcode reader.
A base station into which the scanner is placed when not in use, about the size of a paperback book stood on its spine. This needs a socket nearby as it incorporates the battery charger for the scanner, and a telephone point to allow Fact Finders to call the unit and upload all the data collected, they may also download data but I’ll come to that in a minute. It’s important to note that Fact Finders pay for the calls. The only cost to the Panel Member is the electricity for the charger, which is probably too small to calculate. The unit is called about three in the morning on Sunday and apart from the occasional short “jangle...
HP Improves There Scanners
Review of HP ScanJet 8300 Professional Image Scanner by
Surj1
Advantages: Very Good Quality, Excellent SilverFast Software
Disadvantages: Abit Large, Dust Removal Software Not Good
...The HP ScanJet 8300 is a Professional Image Scanner from HP's Scan jet series. This is one of the top end Scanners HP manufacture and is ideal for the business domain. There is also an 8300gp model of this scanner which is a Graphic Arts scanner and has a monitor color-meter calibrator as a added feature ideal for graphic designers.
Now about the HP ScanJet 8300, the scanner has an OR (Optical Resolution) of 4800x4800dpi and will scan high dynamic range in 48bit colour. This is fine for transparency and negative scanning.
The scanner has a max reflection area of around A4 size. HP includes film holders which will hold 3 strips, 6 frames of a 35mm film. The holders can be placed in the base of the scanner for storage.
The ScanJet 8300 is supplied with HP's own photosmart software. I wasn't impressed with the scan pro scanning...
King of all hand held scanners
Review of Yupiteru MVT-7100 Multiband Scanner by
swordfish1966
Advantages: Very good general coverage
Disadvantages: No computer control
...This scanner is a great scanner. It covers all bands, HF, USB, LSB AM, VHF and UHF.
The scanner comes complete with a mains adaptor/charger as one unit, ear piece, Rechargable batteries, strap, belt clip and car adaptor (plug in to the car lighter socket).
Also a BNC Aerial plus a dodgy manual.
The manual does cover everything but it is a japanese to english translation so does require patience.
Once the batteries are loaded and the aerial connected follow the manual for basic operating procedures.
It has an impressive memory capacity 1000 channels grouped into 10 banks of 100 channels, these can be scanned as seperate banks or as a continuous scan. It also has one priority channel which can be switched on or off, when on it is scanned every few seconds.
The reception is great with the standard whip aerial,I have...
Great Scanner
Review of HP ScanJet G4050 Photo Scanner by
dbirse
Advantages: good quality scanning
Disadvantages: software is rubbish, can take for ever to scan an image
...I bought myself this to scan various things (old photos, documents and some sheet music) and this does the job pretty well. It was a bit on the expensive side but I needed something that would give me good quality and I could trust that it would work well so I went for HP as they are well known for good quality products.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
It can scan at up to 4,800 dpi (dots per inch)
It has 96 bit colour
It has a 216x311mm scanning screen
Connects by USB
It is 303x508x108mm (wxdxh)
It weighs 5.2 kg
So it can give you very good quality, it gets a lot of colours, it's got a decent sized scanning screen, it's pretty big and it's not a light weight utility. There is nothing in there to put me off though because I still bought it.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT
Scanners have been dying out because they are getting beaten...
