Darting about Barnstaple

...During a recent holiday in Devon my famous partner and I had a good look around the north of the county. Barnstaple was just a few miles from our base in Ilfracombe. It is the biggest town in that part of the county with a busy shopping centre and it is famous for it’s huge pannier markets. Our favourite place though, was just a short drive out of the town to the Dartington Crystal factory. The Cork and Bottle, a Pub in Barnstaple

Advantages: Fantastic Pub

...The Cork & Bottle is situated at the top end of Barnstaples' High Street, opposite the Primark Store. It is a fairly old style pub with a friendly atmosphere. The main bar is in the middle of the pub with seating all around. There is a cocktail bar which opens on Thursday, Friday & Saturday Night. The Barman juggles Glasses & Bottles which is always entertaining. There is a DJ in the evenings who plays mainstream dance music and requests There is a Quiz Night on Sundays where you can win bottles of beer There is food served during the day. Wimpy - the better option or not

...I grew up having only one option of a fast-food place - the Wimpy. Ten years later, it remains the ONLY fast-food place in the town-centre, although Barnstaple does now have the added bonus (?) of an out-of-town McDonalds. Lucky us. However, I would say the quality of food is better than most other fast-food places. Especially the potato wedges - these are really yum, and much better than the manky bits of fried-fat you get in the other establishments. The desserts are also good - try the Brown Derby for a treat - a warm donut, topped with ice-cream, chocolate sauce and nuts! Another positive aspect is that I find it more relaxing here then in other places. It does get very busy, but the lack of queueing is much nicer. You get a clean table, a plate and a knife and fork. Negative aspects though - the staff pounce on you as...

...O'Neill is one of the coolest surfwear retailers around, their designs are so varied, and the quality of products is superb. They have so much merchandise to chose from and shops can be found all over the place, particularly in seaside resorts. They have been going for absolutely years, and I think they are extremely inexpensive. I have just invested in a pair of O'Neill "flip-flops", ok, I know this doesn't sound cool, but they really are!! Very comfortable at just £16.00. They height of fashion this season! If you are really into surfwear though, I totally recommend "Children of the Sea" surfwear, which is situated in Barnstaple, North Devon. Come on down to Devon.

Advantages: There is lots to do for all the family.
Disadvantages: It is your typical seaside town.

...Ilfracombe is a seaside resort on the northern Devon coast, and on a good and clear day you can see south Wales - but just don't let that put you off coming here. How do I get there? Chances are you are coming from Bristol's general direction, and so if you are then carry on down the M5 until you reach junction 27. You will see Barnstaple signposted, and so follow these signs for there and once you get closer you will the signs for Ilfracombe starting to appear on the side of the roads. If you are coming from Plymouth, then just follow the Tavistock road across the moors until you hit Okehampton, and then keep going and following the signposts - initially for the likes of Torrington and so on, and then you will once again see the sign posts beginning to appear.
