HP Ipaq - a mixed bag.

Advantages: Battery life quite good, well built
Disadvantages: small screen, poor phone reception

...Background: The company I work for distributes my jobs to the field via a PDA phone. This system was introduced last February when we started out using the disastrously poor quality O2 XDA IIi pda phone, which suffers badly from poor battery life and an overwhelming aptitude to crash several times a day. In an attempt to improve the situation the company is trialling a couple of new handsets, one of which is the HP IPaq. It arrived on Friday so I charged it up to put it through its paces. I was a bit disappointed in the screen size, it is about two thirds of the size of the XDA and it is hard enough to work on that one. HP iPaq Enterprise Handheld

...I have just joined Ciao community to put the record straight on this PDA. A previous Ciao reviewer has given a negative review. I have only owned the PDA (HP iPaq 214 Enterprise Handheld) for two days. I believe I was one of the first in the UK to receive this machine as it became available from 25th January 2008. I was almost put off buying the iPaq by the other review here, but decided to give it a try. I am glad, as the PDA does everything a PDA should and at a very good speed and price. The other review here is definitely not for the iPaq 214. How did he get it some months before anyone else? The description bears no resemblance to my iPaq 214. The reviewer says the camera is appalling and defunct - it does not have a camera at all, so that clears that up. It does have 128 MB SDRAM and 256MB flash ROM, mine also came with 1GB SD card...

HP Ipaq 514 - dont leave home without it

Advantages: Email downloads, handy windows mobile features
Disadvantages: Not all networks support the handset

...HPs first attempt at a mobile phone with mobile PC features, rather than their usual iPaq handhelds, with he phone as an afterthought. This phone is extremely useful and comes with lots of useful features. Running windows mobile, it has all the things you'd come to expect, MS word, excel, powerpoint etc, Wireless, bluetooth, IR, etc. Classic iPaq games like bubblebreaker are included. You can set it to use VOIP (e.g. skype) when using the wireless network to cut communications costs. I find this particulary useful when travelling to download my business emails using IMAP setup. The camera is fairly standard and voice activation is fairly difficult to get to work, unless you have a monotone voice!! IPAQ is a dinosaur

Advantages: Good screen and processor for a small thing, connects to PC easily
Disadvantages: No phone, so limited connectivity

...IPAQ So for me the IPAQ just doesn't meet today's requirements. It is slim, at 13 mm, but it looks a bit plasticy compared to the super-chic iphone. The controls are simple and easy to use, and you can switch between using the touch keyboard and writing on the screen (oh is it just me or does this machine not read handwriting very well though?) There is a useful screen which displays battery life, memory usage and a brightness control. I do find mine keeps switching itself on and off in my handbag though and I get somewhere and find the battery is completely dead cos it's been on all night. Grr. Think of it as a mini laptop, rather than anything else and you'll get the idea. So if you want one of those, why not buy a mini laptop.... ...I've been using this for some time now, and i gotta say its one of the best devices i have ever seen and used. Starting off, is the screen. The main threat to any PDA is its screen - HP took great care of this and has included a flip screen protector on (Which can be removed, though it doesn't annoy me at all) It also has a great screen resolution - especially for movies. Secondly is the battery life - I could play music (using the freeware TCPMP, full volume, equaliser and used mp3's from a SD Card) for around 10 hours plus - note if you turn off the screen, use the device memory etc it will give a lot more out of the device. Though the sound isn't very loud playing from the speaker, it does have very good quality playing media files. Next is its memory. It has a brilliant device memory to store documents, sound clips...
