BBC Radio 1 Review

Advantages: Great Djs, Good music, Funny
Disadvantages: Run by BBC

...Hi today i will be reviewing BBC Radio 1. I usually listen to Radio 1 at night as its something to do while trying to get to sleep (not a bad thing!). I personally enjoy the Chris Moyles Show and Scott Mills mainly because I find Chris funny and Scott has some great features from the old angry pizza man wind up to the new Whats Becky's Forté which features Becky the Assistant Producer trying to find that talent she excels at. The Chris Moyles show is different than most other shows on Radio 1 in that its not just the presenter that gets involved the whole team have a great time and in turn help you to get ready for whatever your going to. During the day there is Jo Whiley, Sarah Cox and Edith Bowman. I personally don't listen to these just because I'm usually busy. For the few times I have listened to them they do film...

BBC1 - losing their grip?

Advantages: Best soap, news and sport at the moment
Disadvantages: Losing bits every year when money becomes more and more involved

...What is there that can be said about BBC1 these days? First they lost Des Lynam to ITV, now they have lost Match of the Day in its old form to ITV. They need to come back on track. Until the recent excellent cricket coverage on Channel 4, there is no doubt that BBC1 had a stronghold on almost all sports in terms of the quality of their presenters and their coverage. Currently the Sydney Olympics is being handled remarkably well by the BBC, on both 1 and 2. The sad thing is, soon all that will be left of this will be news, darts and table-tennis if they carry on in this vein....

BBC 1 news and reviews.

Advantages: comprehensive and easily accessable
Disadvantages: A lot of it

...A white male tonight read the news. Its presentation was almost identical to earlier sessions today. National Headlines for national TV. Live footage from the Middle East. An interesting piece on Christian America and the workplace. The controller of the BBC has moved to independent TV. They announce a break in the programme which did not seem to happen (an independent channel might have commercial breaks). Towards the end SPORTS news. Followed by local news broadcasters - they have started to use channel 5 presenters and weather both national and local with predictions as far ahead as Friday. I found watching all 3 sessions in 1 day a bit much, but it is nice to know that you can switch on at selected hours and catch up with today?s news events world wide (very little changed through out the day). The BBC

Advantages: a great channel with loads of programmes
Disadvantages: none

...Probably the best channel on TV, BBC1 provides us with hours of entertainment and enjoyable programmes each day. Unlike, ITV, channel 4 and channel 5, the BBC aren't cramming as many adverts in as they can, ITV usually have commercial breaks every ten minutes. Aswell as wonderful series and great childrens programmes, the BBC also bring us movie Premieres and some exellent soaps. The best films are mainly brought to us on bank holidays or christmas ect. These include blockbusters such as Titanic and Godzilla, also old favourites such as Free Willy and Beethoven. Also adding some for the little ones. The childrens programmes, not the best, but still educating and interesting for young children. CBBC has brought us exellent series, for example Grange Hill, an all time favourite, and Blue Peter. BBC Audience tickets - a free night out

Advantages: Free
Disadvantages: Some shows are long (and tiring, with all the clapping!)

...An enjoyable and different way to spend an evening without spending any cash is to go and see a BBC show/programme being recorded. You can get tickets for a variety of shows all for free and go and watch them at the BBC studios at White City, London. You can also see shows in Birmingham and Manchester but the majority and the best shows are recorded in London. You can get up to 10 tickets for most recordings so you can go with bunch of mates or work colleagues. However a lot of people go alone so don't worry about that. You usually have to be at least 14 to watch but sometimes you have to be 18. One of the best shows is Parkinson as you get to hear more gossip from the guests than you do if you watch the show on TV and Michael Parkinson is a very relaxed and "normal" host. Do we need the BBC

Advantages: Farscape
Disadvantages: Cost, repeats, the weakest link etc...

...commercial offerings. So what is so unique, Radio 3, no! just listen to classic FM, Radio 1, no! just listen to Kiss FM or Galaxy, BBC 2 education, no! Discovery have 6 channels. The truth is that there is not one of the BBC services that does not have its commercial counterpart elsewhere, either nationally or regionally or would not have it's void filled by another venture looking for market share. They would also argue that they produce unique programming especially for BBC viewers. They do, but only until they discover that they can make a profit out of it. Take the example of 'Mrs Brown' the film about Queen Victoria, which was actually made for TV using fee payers money, but was then released to the cinema instead. So not only did we pay to have it made, we then had to pay to go and see it??? In contrast BskyB has now made three films...

Forget ITN News - BBC1 have it sorted

Advantages: Excellent news readers, reports and coverage, same time every night
Disadvantages: Not on at 9pm any more

...I was angered when BBC1 moved their main news programme from 9.00 p.m. to 10 p.m. I was used to the news at 9 and was happy with it there. Luckily for the BBC, the 10 o'clock news has proved to be very informative and the format well thought out. The link to the local news at 10.25 p.m. is also good - allowing the regional news a whole 10 minutes for their late broadcast. Conversely, what have ITN been up to? Do they even know? First it's the 11 o'clock news and now it's back to the 10 o'clock news - but when is it actually on at 10 o'clock? Mostly it seems to be on around 10.20 ish - sorry but then shouldn't it be renamed the 10.20 o'clock news? The format of the programme is poor, concentrating more on advertising the Tonight Programme with Trevor MacDonald and worrying about what will be read (briefly) after the ad break. I...

The BBC has got something right

Advantages: A very useful service, and well executed
Disadvantages: no page numbers - bring them back!

...If you've got Digital telly, flick a BBC channel on and press your text button. You'll see something that has not happened for years. You'll see the BBC finally getting something right. BBC Text is here...at last. And having to wait that little bit longer for it has made it so much more efficient than the equivalent Sky Text on digital that it is actually usuable. Sky Text's major problem was that whenever you accessed it, it took you away from the channel you were watching. So what was the point? If you wanted to see the sports headlines you could have turned to Sky Sports News. If you wanted to see the news you could have turned to Sky News. Advantages: Excellant Daytime Schedule
Disadvantages: Night Time Schedule

...It all started in 1967 a DJ called Tony Blackburn came on the air and said "and Good Morning everyone welcome to the exciting new sound of Radio 1". Noel Edmonds he was next, And taking us into the 80's was a man who spent the night before his very first show thinking of something prolific, Along came Simon Mayo he was gifted and single after 5 years on the air people only remember his jingle. Now though in the present days we get a very varied show listing. Would I Lie to You? BBC

Advantages: Funny, Good People, No adverts!
Disadvantages: Can sometimes be predictable, starting jokes have been heard before

...Would I Lie to You? in my opinion is one of the funniest BBC comedy panel shows that I've seen in a while; where every week you find out random things you may not know about the celebrities on the show. The statements the contestants are given to tell the other team are always outrageous, and it's fun to guess along at home to see whether you're right. Sometimes the lies can be downright stupid, and you can tell that the person can't possibly think up a story which can be disappointing as you can tell from the outset that it's a lie and takes the fun out of the guessing slightly; but the show makes up for it when there is an embarrassing truth which is equally as mad as the lies, and the other team is completely bemused by the fact that this actually happened. I have to praise Lee Mack and David Mitchell as the team captains...
