... BELGIAN CUISINE Poor little Belgium does get some very bad press. If most people were asked about Belgian food they would probably say chocolate and chips and mayonnaise!! Today I am here as an honoury ambassador of Belgian food and will try to show that there is more than frites and chocolate to Belgium. Belgium is sandwiched between France and Holland along the North Sea, It covers a strip of land almost 200 miles long and 100 miles wide. Belgian chocolate for we common people

...Sainsbury's Belgian Chocolate Spread is only £1 for a 400g jar; this was what initially led me to pick up a jar, I was short on funds, and my usual Nutella was about 25p more, with Milky Way and other branded spreads more again. I've never seen Sainsbury's own products on offer, but I have also not yet seen an offer which makes a brand better value than this. The jar isn't the most exciting looking on the shelves, but it's not important to me, I'm already sold. It has a bright blue plastic lid, and a label which covers about 2/3 of the jar itself, the rest shows the lovely dark chocolate. The jar is a nice shape, it's wider than it is deep, with an oval cylinder, narrowing for the neck, although this does create a slight lip on the inside of the jar. ...What! Only 10 foods? Of all the MILLIONS/ BILLIONS of food products out there we can only pick 10? Well, I suppose you'd get bored by my 100th or so one..or tenth... In no particular order; let's begin 1. Fish -Smoked Haddock, Salmon, Cod, sea bass or tuna. Haddock is delcious in a pitta bread with scrambled egg or haselback potatoes. Salmon fillet is divine if you top it with mayo, crushed seasoned cornflakes with garlic and then drizzled with a cheese sauce. Smoked salmon slices mixed into mash with cheese spread! emm. And tuna, mix it with onion and some chutney to get fish fruity. Make your own fish pie or chop it up into an omelete. Fish is sooo nutritional, versatile and delcious. Not a fan of sardines, herring; trout and the lark, or with heads and eyes still on! Prawns - league of there own. Nice just out the pack...

Belgian Waffles in Brussels

...When I was in Brussels I kept seeing loads of waffles places. I was trying to be healthy but the smell was so delicious. Finally I decided to try a Belgian waffle. I was first put of because the shops had waffles on display. I thought I would get one of the waffles that were displayed. To my surprise I got a fresh one that was made right in front of me. There was many topping to pick from fruit, cream, toffee sauce, chocolate sauce and so on. I decided to get the Belgian waffle with toffee sauce and cream. My friend picked the Belgian waffle with banana's and cream. Both of the Belgian waffles were around £2 each. The Belgian waffle was about the size of a slice of bread but maybe a bit more rectangle. Vacuum sealing food the easy way

...I love my gadgets and I am a complete sucker for the TV shopping channels so when I saw that JML had got their own channel I couldn't resist watching it one wet afternoon recently. They were doing a demonstration of the JML Vacuum Food Sealer and I was intrigued as I sat and watched. Basically it is a very simple machine which will either vacuum seal food into polythene bags or just seal (without vacuum). It looked pretty simple and effective and they were demonstrating a range of uses for it. Given that I cook a lot of meals for one and often 'batch cook' and weekends and make my own home made ready meals for one which I freeze down this looked like quite a useful machine. ...Cool Food is a very attractive little book, it has a very pretty aqua blue spine, and the front cover has a lovely looking tuna salad on. The book is only small, 18 cm tall by 15 cm wide, but it's a thick book (400 pages in all). I like cooking, and for a while found cook books hard to resist. I fell in love with this book in Sainsburys of all places, but once I got it home the love affair dwindled. The book is divided into Starters Mains Sides Sweets Drinks Index I like the fact that there is quite a large chapter on drinks, very few books are so comprehensive in this respect. The majority of the drinks are non-alcoholic which is great for families with kids, although I'd have quite liked either a section on cocktails as this book has a lot of ideas that are great for entertaining, or suggestions by the drinks of 'you could replace...
