Advantages: Speed and number of available ports
Disadvantages: Occupies one PCI slot, no USB2.0 driver yet!?

...Belkin - a name you can trust for quality hardware. That is enough justification for me, having struggled for ages (and failed miserably) to get the USB ports on my motherboard to work reliably (VIA Chipset - yuk!). So, I head straight for the shops to find a plug-and-play USB card so that I can add some working ports to my PC, and connect up my new digital camera without messing about with serial communications errors. Belkin seemed to have the answer, this four port USB card that plugs into one of my motherboard's spare PCI slots. As a bonus, it also claims to support the new USB 2.0 standard. Not that I need version 2.0 just yet, but it always pays to be ahead of the game if you can afford it. So the box arrives, and I eagerly unpack it - only to find that Belkin have pulled a rather mean trick. They haven't written the USB 2.0... Read review

...The Belkin 4 port USB hub is the ideal way to add additional usb ports to your computer. It plugs into 1 usb slot on your machine, and gives you 4 new ports. With it's own power supply, it can provide proper 500 mA per port power, and each port comes with it's own overload setting. As USB becomes more and more popular, this is an easy expansion method, enabling you to chain up to 127 devices together. Although a little bit more expensive than some rivals, it not only looks stylish, but can be linked together with the Busstation to give you lots of different component options. What this means, is that if I want to transfer photos from my camera to my laptop, I can't do it without an application to IT helpdesk in triplicate, a three week wait and a £25 call out charge on my cost centre. So the solution they proposed was the Belkin gizmo - to give it its full name the 'High speed USB 2.0 15-in-1 Media Reader and Writer'. What is it? *********** It's a little box with four differently shaped slots in the front and a cable running out the back with a USB fixture on the end. You just plug it into your USB port on your computer, put your memory card from your camera into the appropriate slot and 'hey presto' download/upload your photos and transfer the files. Dead simple. Presumably, you can also use it to put photos back onto your stick as well... Read review

...The Belkin SmartMedia Media reader does its job satisfactorily, but has a few minor problems and is a little expensive at around £20. Technology: This card reader simply connects to any USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 port and installs in under a minute with the included software. Transfer of files is very fast compared to a serial connection but is generally just the same as any other USB device. The device can transfer files to and from a card, delete files, create files and modify files and it shows up as a removable drive in Windows, allowing drag-and-drop functionality. One annoyance is that you have to remember to right click on the card reader's icon in Windows and press eject to eject your card, otherwise you can end up wiping it. ...a 7 port version, though this costs more. You can even connect these into each other giving anything up to a maximum of 127 devices per port! Now that would be a lot of wires! This hub is USB 1.1, operating at an impressive 12Mbps, though if you really need faster than this, Belkin also do a USB 2.0 version for a little more of your money which runs at 480Mbps. ...I bought this hub as an impulse purchase but based my decision on: (a) you can never have enough usb ports (b) belkin are a respected manufacturer (c) I liked the design It cost me £12 when I bought it but I think that was the stores mistake as I have seen it advertised at between £19 and £24. Even at that price though this is a good piece of kit. Bearing in mind you can get USB 2 hubs for about half the piece of this one made by companies you may have never heard of, the design and features on this device make it a very attractive and useful addition to your desktop. It has seven USB ports; five on the back and two placed nattily and very usefully on the top. The top ones are what make this great in my view. They are ideal for things you want to plug in and take out on a regular and irregular basis. I use them for usb memory sticks... Read review
