...When you hear the name "Ben Hur" what comes to your mind? The famous Chariot Race in the arena against the Roman Messala? Think you of the galley slave rescuing Quintus Arrius after the sea battle with pirates? Or do you think about the setting ~ the babe born to be "King of the Jews" worshipped by magi (such as Balthazar, the Egyptian), brought up as a carpenter's son; then, as a rabbi, speaking peace and healing; then crucified with that same title "King of the Jews" nailed above His head?
Of course, the story is All that ~ and MORE. When (American Civil War General) Lew Wallace wrote his tale "BEN HUR ~ A Tale Of The Christ" in the late nineteenth century, he was trying to place Jesus, Son of Mary and (as it seemed) Joseph, the carpenter from Nazareth, into the historical context of Roman Occupied Judea. How...

Review of Ben Hur (DVD)
Advantages: A good way of carrying things Disadvantages: None
...Ready for school? ~~~
Don?t forget your backpack full of those essential things.
There are so many backpacks around these days with pictures of favourite characters. I had to use a boring school satchel carried over 1 shoulder. So if your child is Hannah Montana mad or Ben 10 crazy you will find the back pack to suit them.
I know a child who is Ben 10 mad so his parents bought him a back pack featuring Ben. This back pack is available from several sources. ToysRus have it for £9.99 Amazon have it from £12.99.
Looks~
This is a black and green backpack. The main compartment is black with a green trim this closes with a long zip. This has the word Ben 10 written centre front .On the front of the bag there is a small zipped pocket this has Ben ten in an action shot .on it and is the green colour. On the sides of the bag there...

Review of Ben Hur (DVD)
Advantages: Ben, the two of us need look no more.......... Disadvantages: .......We both found what we were looking for
...Now I?m a big fan of Ben Sherman, I wear his shirts and T-shirts, I occasionally slip into his pants, and I always strap a watch of his onto my wrist and can be seen adorned with his sunglasses in the summer months. So when I heard tale that he had lent his good name to a range of deodorants and body sprays I was excited beyond compare. Now I could smell like my hero as well as wearing all of his quality clothing and accessories.
Hot foot, I race to my local Tesco store in search of the latest addition to the body care range and a quick scan of the deodorant and body spray aisle soon had me united with the product in question. And to be fair, you?d be hard pushed not to notice Ben Sherman body spray as it comes resplendent in a lime green canister. Both the body spray and deodorant come in three scents, all given cheeky little names...

Review of Ben Sherman
Advantages: fascinating, easy to read, Disadvantages: far too absorbing
...As I am currently not working I have plenty of time on my hands and am so far using a fairly large chunk of it reading and re-reading some of the heaps of books that litter my bedroom (I was meant to be tidying up, but you know how rude it is to pick up a book and not read it don't you?). This is one that for whatever reason had previously been overlooked so must have been languishing in book purgatory for over a year, given that I have always enjoyed Ben Eltons other books it was time to devote my eyes to this one.
It is well known that this book is about one of the hardest topics for any couple to come to terms with. The reasons behind infertility and the solutions to this problem. Of course it is also known that Ben Elton is writing from his own experiences as he and his wife had to get IVF treatment before they could become...
Advantages: Smart looking scooter. Sturdy and well made. My son loves his! Disadvantages: Secret fold out drawer and little alien figures are a little bit of a gimmick
...My six year old son is obsessed by the Ben 10 cartoon series, currently showing on the Cartoon Network TV channel. The programme itself features a boy (Ben) who can transform himself into alien super-heroes by using his omnitrix (a sort of watch) and defeats villians using his special powers. As with any successful children's programme, there is an abundance of spin-off products available designed to part parents from their cash - little figures (got them), DVDs (got them) and now even a scooter emblazoned with Ben 10 images.
As far as tv programme merchandise goes, this scooter is actually of surprisingly good quality and, to be fair, not badly priced. We did some price comparisons before buying this for our son's birthday last September and found the cheapest stockist then to be Argos (at £34.99 compared to the RRP of £39.99.) Yes...
Advantages: Tasty, fair amout of chunks and swirls, 10p goes to charity, helping the environment Disadvantages: Expensive, hard to get the lid when first opened, not the healthiest
...~~~~~~~~~~
Ben & Jerry's
~~~~~~~~~~
Ben & Jerry's ice cream was founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield and has now been brought by Unilever. They met in school and several years later after many unsuccessful and unenjoyed jobs they both attended a $5.00 course in ice cream making and after investing $12,000 they then opened their first 'scoop shop' in a gas station in Burlington, Vermont in 1978. It didn't take long for them to become very popular. Ben had no sense of taste so he relied on what he called 'mouth feel', and big chunks of all sorts of ingredients, especially chocolate became their signature, and it is still is to this day. In 1979 they began selling pints of ice cream out of the side of a VW camper van, they continued to grow and improve throughout the years and have now stand as one of the favourite brands...
...as few retro references but it is not necessary to have read these other books to enjoy 'Jupiter'.
The descriptive talents of Mr Bova are on full show here as he describes the stunning Jupiter in all its glory. The new life found here really is cleverly thought out and wonderfully visualised. The characters are rounded and fleshed out whilst the dialogue is fairly good.
The inevitable twists near the end of the book was not seen by me and it was a good 'ohhh' moment.
The book moves along at a brisk pace and you will enjoy it.
A very good read and highly recommended.
Written by Ben Bova....
Review of Jupiter - Ben Bova
Advantages: Sometimes very moving, occasional funny moments Disadvantages: Forgets that it's meant to be a novel
...About six years ago, I read a book called Gridlock. It was the first I had read by a man whose stand up comedy I had not been that keen on (probably too young), but who was also partly responsible for the hilarious Blackadder (probably a tad precocious). Gridlock was pretty good- unconventional, sharp, funny. So over the next six years, I read more of Ben Elton?s books. Some were better than others, all were imaginative, but unfortunately it was becoming ever more apparent that they were also getting increasingly tiresome. High Society has finally made me decide I probably won?t be reading any more.
First the plot. Elton structures his books as multi-dimensional approaches to a societal problem (not a bad thing, on the whole, but it can get exhausting), this time drug culture and the criminal justice system. It is an episodic...
...I can't believe this overblown, overwrought three-hour snorefest gets so much acclaim. It may have looked great back in 1959, and I must admit that the chariot race still looks pretty impressive, but it's just a single bright spot in the otherwise unmemorable film. The story itself is quite majestic and epic, but unfortunately brought down by the laughably dated visuals, sluggish pace and terrible acting. Charlton Heston, in particular, gives one of the most wooden performances I've ever seen, to the point where his "menacing" stares and bared teeth brought unintentional giggles on my part. Overall, Ben-Hur is a film that just doesn't stand the test of time....
