Ben & Jerry's Bohemian Raspberry
Advantages: Tasty, fair amout of chunks and swirls, 10p goes to charity, helping the environment
Disadvantages: Expensive, hard to get the lid when first opened, not the healthiest
...~~~~~~~~~~
Ben & Jerry's
~~~~~~~~~~
Ben & Jerry's ice cream was founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield and has now been brought by Unilever. They met in school and several years later after many unsuccessful and unenjoyed jobs they both attended a $5.00 course in ice cream making and after investing $12,000 they then opened their first 'scoop shop' in a gas station in Burlington, Vermont in 1978. It didn't take long for them to become very popular. Ben had no sense of taste so he relied on what he called 'mouth feel', and big chunks of all sorts of ingredients, especially chocolate became their signature, and it is still is to this day. In 1979 they began selling pints of ice cream out of the side of a VW camper van, they continued to grow and improve throughout the years and have now stand as one of the favourite brands...
When Ben Met Jerry
Advantages: Cheap way to spend a few hours; delicious ice cream
Disadvantages: Forget the diet
...There are a lot of cows in Vermont. Indeed, rumour has it that the cows outnumber the people in the Green Mountain State, so when you consider that according to US Census figures, there were 623,050 humans living in Vermont in 2005, that makes for an enormous number of cows. Yet unemployment in the bovine community is practically non-existent. Whether it's gracing an oversized dinner-plate in one of Vermont's numerous steakhouses, or producing the milk used to make some of the state's finest cheeses and yoghurts, a cow is bound to find work of some kind. The lucky ones, the crème de la crème, as it were, get to work for the hundreds of family farms which provide the milk used to make Ben & Jerry's ice cream; they're lucky, because Ben & Jerry's insists that its farmers pledge not to treat their cows with rBGH, or recombinant Bovine...
Ben & Jerry Fish Food - part II
Advantages: Rich and chocolatey
Disadvantages: Too chocolatey
...Anyone who read my recent op on Tetrafin will have come to the conclusion that, although I'm amazingly knowledgeable, I'm hardly an expert on fish food. But, in an ever-increasing thirst to discover the secrets of piscine nutrition, I am always willing do a little research and have been known to devour the slightest morsel of information on the subject.
With this in mind, today I will mostly be reviewing BEN & JERRY'S PHISH FOOD.
Part of the reason for this is that I was challenged by the delicious Yummy87 to write an op - the Bigyummyangel Challenge. The choices were: any ice-cream, advice on high blood pressure, or Babycham.
The choice was obvious.
But as I didn't come across any Babycham in Asda, I thought I'd scoff a tub of calorie-laden cold stuff and hopefully dramatically increase my blood pressure in the process...
The importance of Ben and Jerry
Advantages: Great Recipes
Disadvantages: Very Rich
...Ben and Jerry?s ice cream. Always coming up as one of the favourites in the Ciao challenge ?favourite ice cream? question, and I have to admit to being rather partial to a tub myself from time to time. So as my answer to that particular challenge question is ?the homemade variety? I was quite pleased when browsing through the recipe section of the bookshop I came across a Ben and Jerry?s recipe book. Fantastic, so for the princely sum of £7.99 the shop let me take it home, and 12 months later I finally got around to trying out some of the recipes and to writing a review.
The book is a good size for browsing it?s a small to medium size paperback book, so none of the struggling to fit it on the shelf, or the kitchen work top when you?re trying to use it, and as you can see from the picture at the top, it?s very brightly covered...
Eat Ben and Jerry's for charity!
Advantages: Too many to list! the flavour and charity donations are the biggest advantages
Disadvantages: the price, but its worth it!
...When I saw the product of the week was a new Ben and Jerry's ice cream I knew it was perfect for my very first product of the week review!
I have always loved Ben and Jerry's delicious flavours of ice cream and think I must have tried them all by now, so when I saw they had brought out a new flavour I headed to the shops. I found this new Bohemian Raspberry flavour in my local tesco.
A bit of history...
Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened their very first ice cream store back in 1978 in Burlington, Vermont, after a series of unsuccessful jobs and Jerry's failed attepmts at medical school. Their natural ice cream became increasingly popular in the community but found they were not making any money. The following year they learnt a bit more about book keeping and began selling thier fantastic ice creams out of Ben's VW campervan...
Ben and Jerry's Is Not Suitable For Children, Hide It!
Advantages: Fab taste and smell.
Disadvantages: Lots of fat, very moreish!
...It was 1986 when Ben and Jerry?s first came up with the idea of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream. It really was a brainwave. It took them another five years to perfect it and it first became available to the public in 1991. (Now how?s that for the perfect job: Ben and Jerry?s ice cream tester?)
It was, of course an instant success. What it basically is, is vanilla ice cream with lumps of chocolate chip cookie dough. The story behind its development features a group of sorority girls in Vermont who had gone into a grocery store and bought packs of chocolate chip cookie dough and taken the across the road to the Burlington Scoop Shop (Vermont). They had ordered plain vanilla ice cream and chopped the cookie dough into it.
Perhaps the thought of raw dough doesn?t sound appetising but it is delicious. The top scoring flavour...
Ben and Jerry Took My Cherry
Advantages: Tastes fabulous
Disadvantages: Expensive, moreish
...Up until last week I was a virgin ? a Ben and Jerry?s virgin that is! Although I?d read loads about how fabulous Ben and Jerry?s ice cream was I faithful to my first love Bailey?s Hagen Daaz.
But I have strayed. And it was so marvellous that I don?t even feel guilty (except about the horrific calorific content, of course!!)
Ben and Jerry?s, for those of you, like myself who are new to the novelty ice cream market was founded in 1978 by two friends (Ben and Jerry surprisingly enough!) in Vermont. Since it was founded it has gone on to create exciting flavoured ice creams with weird names by the bucket load ? according to the website the current number one flavour is Cherry Garcia ? the only ice cream ever to be named after a member of the Grateful Dead (I?m guessing here, correct me if I?m wrong!)
But onto the important bit...
My threesome with Ben and Jerry
Advantages: The nicest ice cream in the world
Disadvantages: Fattening...
...Ok, to start off - I'm not sitting with a tub of this in front of me and a spoon! Honest! Oh, alright I am, but who can blame me, this is the best ice cream ever!
Ben and Jerry's ice cream hails from Vermont, USA, where, in 1978 two guys called Ben and Jerry decided to make some yummy ice cream. I won't bore you all with the whole story (visit www.benjerry.co.uk/thisisus for the history of the company straight from the horse's mouth!), but all you need to know is that their business went from strength to strength and they're now world-famous ice cream megastars!
Ben and Jerry's ice cream is available from various places all over the country (most supermarkets, pizza delivery people, and garages (sorry, but who eats ice cream in the car?!) seem to sell it), so you won't have any trouble getting your hands on the stuff. A 500ml tub...
Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Stick
Advantages: Unique way of enjoying Phish fodd without being tempted to eat the whole tub
Disadvantages: still quite high in cals per stick and not avaliable in all supermarkets
...COST: £1.70
PLACE OF PURCHASE: Blockbuster Video Store
Size of Ice Cream: 4 inches
Weight: 87g
Most people will have heard of the wonderful ice cream from Ben and Jerry's. Not only are a large majority of their products Fair trade or have special donations to charities such as Glastonbury's water aid, 40p from each tub goes to water aid helping third world countries with water problems. But their ice cream is known to be one of the tastiest on the market!
Phish Food is a flavour which is my favourite and I usually indulge (of course when feeling flush with cash as usually around £4.00 for a 500ml tub), and end up eating the entire thing.
This, although tasting and feeling great. Due to my terrible sweet tooth and the fact that chocolate is know to release the same chemicals in the brain as experienced when having sex. It...
Save the Whirled Ben and Jerry style
Advantages: Fantastic tasting, quality icecream
Disadvantages: Hard to get out of the tub
...I have this theory. You?re either a B&J lover or a Haagen-Dazs lover (assuming that you like ice-cream). I fall (Bailey?s aside), firmly into the B&J camp.
Ben & Jerry?s ice-cream is one of those products that sells itself by being a little different. From the "don?t you feel sorry for them? histrionics of the company, to the natty flavours and unmistakable tub designs, B&J stand out from the crowd that is the luxury ice-cream market.
One of the things that B&J seem to try to do is to be topical ? they launch products with satirical names and often have limited editions backing a cause. One Sweet Whirled falls into this latter category.
