Hôtel Restaurant La Flambée -dine in style but bedrooms plain.
Advantages: Beautiful dining room
Disadvantages: Bedrooms adequate but not elegant.
...We stayed at the Hôtel Restaurant La Flambée in Bergerac in November 2008 for two nights and enjoyed breakfast and dinner. What follows is an honest account as possible about the hotel as I can provide. Hopefully this may help if you are planning to visit this part of the world.
We flew to Bordeaux but the most convenient airport for the hotel is actually in Bergerac as the hotel lies about 2 miles outside the town. Incase you are not familiar with this part of the world these places are in the main wine growing areas, and are in South West France. Flying time from the UK is about an hour and a half if you are flying from the London areas. Easyjet will take you to Bordeaux from Luton, likewise British Airways will fly you from Gatwick, and Ryanair will fly you from Stansted to Bergerac. This area is great as it is possible to use as...

My love affair with a Nasal Appendage
Advantages: Sumptuous Masterpiece
Disadvantages: Its has Subtitles
...very familiar?
Well my answer to that is yes it is very familiar you may have seen a film made in 1987 called Roxanne. Which starred Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah and is a very touching and tender romantic comedy. However Cyrano de Bergerac, for me, beats it hands down every single time.
THE FILM ITSELF
Starring Gerard Depardieu, Anne Brochet and Vincent Perez are simply stunning as the love triangle each contributing elemental level to passion going on between them. Depardieu is a perfect Cyrano loud and brash but at the same time hiding a hurt that fester within him. His love for Roxanne is like a diamond he treasures within a silk glove. Brochet?s Roxanne is ethereal in her beauty and her blindness to Cyrano?s love, because of her passion for Christian, totally believable. Perez as Christian is excellent portraying the 15th...

A bit of an institution
Advantages: Jersey, Nettles
Disadvantages: Run of the mill
...It's long gone now, but for a while Bergerac which starred John Nettles as Channel Islands cop Jim Bergerac was one of those series that became a bit of an institution.
This one had the fancy car (like Morse), the rich ex father in law who's a bit of a rogue (like Arthur Daley, even down to the cigars) and a cop who's just that bit non-establishment (like, oh well, all of them).
It was quite run of the mill and similar to all the others, but it was pleasant enough and Jersey made a nice change for a while.
Nettles was the only other distinguishing feature and he was okay but nothing special.
Summing up - cosy, nice enough but nothing special...

Beautiful Jersey
Advantages: Well though out police drama
Disadvantages: Stories lame towards the end
...This programme did more for the Jersey tourist industry than any thing else! John Nettles battled a constant stream of villans (most from aminland UK) and bedded all manner of ladies! The show gave the viewer a great view on the fantastic island of Jersey and made sure that each storyline had an outside broadcast of some sort. The storylines - although showing the island as crimeridden - were plausible and entertaining and the chracters believable to a certain extent. It was s hame that near the end of the run the writters obviously had a mental block, had Bergerac leave the island to become a Private Detective in France - yet somehow every French case led back to Jersey or to his former Father-in-law!...

The Delightful Dordogne!
Advantages: picturesque
Disadvantages: expensive
...The Dordogne is a picturesque region of France located in the south-west of the country. It is particularly famous for its foir-gras and duck. It is not one of the better wine growing regions.
The easiest way to get to the Dordogne is via Bergerac airport. This is a very small airport serviced by the low cost airlines only. If you drive it will take approx 9 hours from Calais.
I really enjoyed my stay in the Dordogne and would definately return. The region is lush and green with the meandering river never too far away for a quick swim. There are a range of safe swimming points along the river (some have lifeguards but most dont). Beware of the current on the river it is very strong in places.
My favourite Points of interest:
Limeuil - Lovely village where the Dordogne and Vezere rivers meet. Good restarant overlooking...

A load of trout
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: bland and unorigioonal
...I hate the concept of this show and the BBC must know I hate it because they reuse the formula so many times. You know, the eccentric copper/lawyer in this case, with a passion for classical music, living in the middle of nowhere, driving a vinatage motor etc. etc. a la bergerac and Morse. This guy drives an old Citroen and if it is successful series the car will be much sort after, he neglects his son who runs away and stuff. Its so bland I can't even write 90 words about it. Just dont watch it. They went out to waste our licnse fee on this....

Big Break - More like Big Broke
Advantages: Erm...... I suppose it's cheap
Disadvantages: Looks staid and dated
...What is it about BBC1 and Jim Davidson? Don't they realise that he's an annoying little man who's far too overexposed?
This programme has been on far too long and it's about time that it got axed. When it was first on, in about 1872, it was fairly new and refreshing, but nowadays with the influx of gameshows on television (thanks to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire), the show looks tedious and dated. Davidson and John Virgo are running out of jokes, seemingly having covered every comedy angle possible in their little introduction at the beginning. If the BBC must show programmes like this, why not show it during the daytime when there's nothing else on (surely anything is better than repeats of Bergerac!)....

Saint Helier - patron saint of pears?
Advantages: Fantastic taste - ideal for summer, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Too easy to drink!
...?)
I have only seen this in a few pubs, mostly independents, and have seen no advertising. Which is a shame really as I am sure the current trend for pear cider would boost their sales quite a bit as more people become aware of it.
Overall, if you have a sweet tooth when it comes to booze, St Helier will soon be top of your shopping list! (I am sure that Jersey's favourite son, Sergeant Jim Bergerac would be a fan, er, if he wasn't a recovering alcoholic that is)....
