A stylish Reid
Advantages: Readable, great characters
Disadvantages: Makes you want to go and spend a fortune on clothes!
...For some reason I have never come across Carmen Reid before, I don't know why. I suppose I read the authors I liked and didn't stray far from them. Now I have read all my favourites offerings and have been looking around for other authors. I was spending a voucher on Amazon and the pink cover caught my eye. I found that Carmen Reid has written quite a few books and she looked right up my street so I bought this book and its sequel 'Late Night Shopping' hoping that I liked the first!
~Carmen Reid~
Carmen Reid has written nine novels two of which are aimed at teenagers and the others for grown ups (urgh I suppose thats me then!) She has a lovely website www.carmenreid.com which I love looking at since I am very nosy and like to know as much about the author as I do about the book! Carmen lives in Glasgow with her husband and two...

Beryl Reid in leather - the stuff of nightmares...
Advantages: Superb story with a bit of a twist
Disadvantages: Looks a bit dated now. But then, don't all 80s shows?
...unknown to its crew, is transporting an invasion force of 15,000 Cybermen to take over the planet. With help from the freighter?s captain (played by a dreadfully miscast Beryl Reid) the Doctor defeats the Cybermen by sending the freighter back in time 65 million years (I?m embellishing slightly, but this is the result of his actions), where it will collide with Earth and cause the extinction of the dinosaurs (the ?Earth-Shock? of the title). Unfortunately, Adric is forced by the Cyberleader to remain on board, and is unable to prevent the destruction of the freighter, and dies as a result.
This extremely tense and at times gripping story showed the viewers that, as good and clever as he was, the Doctor was not infallible. And indeed, even though he ultimately defeats the Cybermen here, it can be argued that the death of Adric sees...

Carmen Reid - An OK Read
Advantages: Good for escapism, light-hearted, fun
Disadvantages: Not the best of it's kind, others do chick-lit better
...Annie Valentine is stylish, savvy, mulit-tasker extraordinaire and she is the central character in Carmen Reid's 'The Personal Shopper'. I've never read anything by Reid before and I nearly didn't read this after I noticed the appallingly cheesy tagline on the back of the book - 'A fabulous read. A sexy read. A Carmen Reid'. But I decided to overlook this minor 'flaw' and give it a go - after all, you should NEVER judge a book by its cover!
Annie Valentine is the single mother of a stroppy teenage girl and painfully shy eleven year old boy. She is a super-busy personal shopper in a super-swanky department store. She spends her days mentoring and re-inventing her clients through the medium of clothes and she's damn good at her job. It seems though, that she is so good at her job that she leaves no time for her personal life. Will she...

Turned into a good Reid!
Advantages: Main character Annie is a bit annoying
Disadvantages: Disappointed when it finished
...I read a book by Carmen Reid a few years ago called Three In A Bed and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't hear anything about the author's other work until recently when a friend gave me this book - Late Night Shopping - which according to said friend was "my Cup of tea".
I skimmed the blurb on the back of the book and thought it sounded okay, but as I was in the middle of reading a book already I put it to one side and sort of forgot about it for a while..Oops.
We were going away in the October half term break for a few days so thought what a good opportunity to take this book with me and get stuck into it..
The story~
Now unbeknown to me at the time I started reading this, this is actually the second book to the successful Personal Shopper following on where lead character Annie Valentine's story left us at the end of the first one...

Not just a Late Night Reid!
Advantages: Good story, more likeable than the first
Disadvantages: Annie's still annoying!
...Every week, I always pop into WH Smith to see the latest books that have been released and also the half price bargains of the week. Although I have a massively full bookshelf which I can't seem to stop from growing, I was pleased to see that they had the new Carmen Reid book on half price offer this week, and although I wasn't all that keen on the prequel to this book, I thought it was worth £3.49 and decided to buy it and give Ms Reid another read!
This book is a sequel to Carmen Reid's bestseller, The Personal Shopper. We return to the character of Annie Valentine who is where we left her at the end of the pevious book. She's loved up with Ed, a handsome teacher, and her 2 children Lana and Owen. Annie's job as personal shopper is still going well, but Annie is determined to branch out on her own, even though Ed isn't too keen...

CARMEN REID IS A FABULOUS READ!
Advantages: A feisty, funny, memorable heroine plus a great story
Disadvantages: It came to an end
...tries to fit in some kind of social life and, more importantly, would like to meet a special someone who she can settle down with.
I must applaud Ms Reid for describing Annie early on in the story for us. So often, when I'm usually halfway through a book, the author will decide to chuck in a random description of the heroine and you can bet she will be totally opposite to the one I've dreamed up, due to the lack of any clues.
Also, she gives Annie a definite voice. We know Annie is a Londoner born and bred and with the use of clever phrases and Annie-isms, every time she opens her mouth we know exactly how she speaks.
Each and every one of her other main characters, from her children (stroppy teen Lara and painfully shy Owen); to Annie's dragon of a female boss (so like one of my own recent employers, it was scary) are...

Afternoon tea at Reid's Palace Hotel
Advantages: Good service with a feel good ambience
Disadvantages: none - do it.
...Taking afternoon tea on the terrace at the historic Reid's Palace Hotel is a bit of a must do thing while on holiday in Madeira. We stayed at the Pestana Grand in September 2007 and they were happy to book a table for two for us at Reid's Palace hotel.
I was a little concerned about going to Reid's Palace because taking afternoon tea isn't really a regular holiday activity for me. I am more likely to be taking an afternoon hair of the dog!
We were a bit put off the idea by our guidebook which said that evening dress had to be worn in the dining rooms and that gentlemen had to be appropriately attired in other areas. Not being sure what appropriate attire was I wore the best I had available - a pair of chinos and a short sleeved linen shirt, my wife wore trousers and a neat top but we were far from looking posh. When we were shown...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

The Return of the Reid Twins
Advantages: A couple of decent tracks
Disadvantages: A distinct lack of passion displayed in the music
...Having enjoyed success earlier this year with the single "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" featuring 'Brian Potter' and 'Andy Pipkin', The Proclaimers are back with album 'Life With You' which contains 13 brand new songs. This is their seventh studio album to date, and is the first for two years having released 'Restless Soul' in 2005. The Proclaimers are of course a Scottish band comprising of identical twins Charlie and Craig Reid. The band actually formed in 1983, however it was not until the January of 1987 that the band came to fame when they made an appearance on the popular music programme 'The Tube' on Channel 4. Since then the band have never gone more than 6 years without the release of a new studio album, and even then they broke up the silence with the release of an EP halfway through this six year dry period. It is no surprise then...
