Advantages: Easily readable, light, non-intellectual, aimed at the more mature woman
Disadvantages: A tad old fashioned, but perhaps I am too?

...Yes, I?ll admit it! I?ve been reading rather a lot of magazines lately. Mainly by virtue of the fact that I went to Scotland for a week in August and travelled by train. It?s a five hour journey and whilst I can quite easily get my head stuck into a good book for such a duration, I do find that the density of the text combined with the motion of the train, makes me feel sick after a while. So, magazines, with their colours and layouts make a good alternative. That?s my excuse anyway. One of the magazines that I picked up was ?best?. Whilst doing a little research for this review, I was surprised to discover that this publication has been around since 1987. Apparently, it is aimed at female readers between the ages of 25-55, but has a median reader age of 40. Heh, that?s me! Certainly, as I flicked through it I was pleasantly...

Review of Best

"Best" isn't brilliant

Advantages: Not too hard for the brain
Disadvantages: Much of a muchness, same style as Bella, Woman etc.

...I was wandering into the local sainsbury's petrol station and studying the mags, knowing I didn't want to add too much onto my bill, I decided to buy Best Magazine. I bought issue 23/05 with date 14th June 2005 on the cover. At 70 pence and with the chance to win a trip to Paris, I just had to buy it. You can buy this on every newsagent's stand and every forecourt. It's as common as The Daily Mirror however I don't think you can take a subscription out on this, so you have to make that trip out each Friday. I used to buy Best regularly when it was just an unbelievably low 40 pence and it was fatter. Now its become skinny and I've spread out! I was surprised to find its only 67 pages long, it used to be a whopping 98 pages. So I don't mind if they condense the magazine but how can the publishers justify putting the price up...

Best Actresses

Advantages: Great Actresses
Disadvantages: Not to everyones tastes

...I love my films so I've got a long list of favourite actors & actresses but I'll try & narrow it down. 1) Reece Witherspoon Reece Witherspoon has been in everything from teen dramas (Cruel Intentions) to chick flicks (Legally Blonde) to Political thrillers (Rendition) to put it simply the girl can act & I think at the moment she's the highest paid actress in the world. Review of 10 Best Actresses

10 of the best.

Advantages: There are many good films to see them in.
Disadvantages: In a list of ten.... you can only pick ten.

...fame in "Public enemy" when he famously pushed a grapefruit in to Mae Clarke's face, which was not in the script. He really wanted to be a song and dance man though but it was tough for him to get the roles because of him being typecast as a gangster. He did get the chance though when he played George M. Cohan in the biography film "Yankee Doodle Dandy" I like this film because i like biography's films. Although i am probably guilty of typecasting him as well because i loved him in gangster movies. Out of all the gangster movie actors, Bogart, Raft, Robinson and the rest he was the best. My most favorite film of James Cagney is "Angels with dirty faces" Its just a shame that like in all of his gangster films, he dies in the end. I have enjoyed all the films i have watched of his and that is including the ones that were not gangster movies...

The Best Of The Best - Whitesnake

Advantages: Amazing Songs , Voices...
Disadvantages: -

...with a back tingling sensation makes the start of the song unique to the others. The voice starts of quite queitly , but later on the rock comes back into it with the powerful Whitesnake voice!... "Here I Go Again On My Own Here I Goooooo" Classic. As you can tell by the second "Go" in the lyrics qoute , the powerful voice of David Coverale returns back , completely different to the start of the song. This song reminds me of when i had to have the confidence of doing something hard , on my own! I learnt from this , and after i knew i could do it.... Another enjoyable song , but not the best.... Overall , this song gets a 6/10. It isn't the the best song , but it has some great lyrics , and backing use and the voices are sublime. Then again , it is a slower more boring song after you have listened to it a few times over... This...

Is Best Really Best?

Disadvantages: Tacky, non-challenging

...There are tons of women’s magazine on the market, all pretty much aiming at the same audience. There’s little to choose between the 60-odd pence weeklies, but most people who read them have one or two they just stick to. If you want a change though, or are new to the whole wafer thin paper mag set up, you need to know the answer to just one question: is Best best? BEST FOR TRASHY REAL LIFE STORIES? Probably, yes, if you want really and truly atrociously trashy tales to make you laugh / cry. A typical claim? “My flab saved my life”, “I’m 60, he’s 23, why I love my toy boy husband”, “How can I tell dad I’m a glamour model?” (not, I hasten to add, the same story). Yep, as far as trashy goes, Best’s pretty much got the edge over other more conservative magazines...

Best Of Billie

Advantages: Great tracks, loads of emotion packed inside!
Disadvantages: Not so much tracks from her first album

Best Is quite Good

...Best is a weekly magazine aimed at the female reader market. Whilst at 60 pages it is not a large magazine there is not an excess of advertising ( advertising makes up about 10 pages including self-advertising for the next issue) so it is filled with articles, stories and editorials. The mix within the magazine is very good. About 4 pages are devoted to fashion/clothing and this in Best this clothes for real women. We are not talking Milan cat-walk here and the clothes and accessories are all usable and accessible. A couple of photos of celebrities are used to illustrate what to wear (or not). It does show Best reflects real life and articles on real people are sensible and well balanced though occasionally the language grates as in ‘My mum gave me away in a Chip Shop’. I sometimes wonder what motivates people to sell...

...My mother-in-law recently went away on a boating holiday and, as usual, bought herself a pile of magazines to read. When she came back, she donated them to a worthy cause – me! I don’t usually buy or read many magazines at all. Any spare time I have is either spent on the computer, writing, doing housework or reading books. But, the magazines were free, so I thought I’d give them a go and let you know what I thought. There are oodles of women’s’ magazines out there. So for one to claim it is the ‘best’ is rather presumptuous of it. However, the front cover refines this to ‘Britain’s best weekly’. Well, I’m not sure exactly what the competition is like, but this is my opinion, based on the issues for May 15th and 22nd. The magazine costs 64p, but it looks cheap...
