Belize it or not!
Advantages: The Blue Hole, rich with history
Disadvantages: beggars following you around town asking for money
...I visited Belize in 2006 on a diving trip so this is a review of both Belize and the diving.
What Made me Choose Belize?
I am a keen diver and had just finished watching champion freediver, Tanya Streeter, in a programme about scuba diving and skin diving in Belize. I was so fascinated and taken by the place that I decided I must go and spent time researching my different options. I settled on a liveaboard experience (7 days at sea) and a week spent in Belize.
Getting to/from Belize
I live in Berkshire so I flew from London Heathrow to Belize City. There are no direct flights from the UK so I had to fly via Miami and stay in Miami overnight. It was Virgin from LHR to Miami and American to Belize.
Coming back I did not have to do an overnight but spent a lot of time waiting at Miami International...

Belize Barrier Reef "A World Heritage Site"
Advantages: Second largest mass of living coral in the World!
Disadvantages: For divers only
...of the seven World Heritage areas, the Half Moon Cay, an idyllic island sanctuary for the rare red-footed booby. Some 98 other species of birds have been recorded here as well. The dive off the Half Moon Cay Wall, which is covered with beautiful soft corals and drops to 1000, meters, is spectacular.
As seen from this brief visit to the Belize Barriers Reef, there is good reason to preserve this treasure for the wonderment of future generations. Its loss would truly constitute a harmful impoverishment
of the heritage of all nations.
Thanks for reading!...

Dead Birds
Advantages: creepy, good sound
Disadvantages: slow
...time goes on they come to realise that not all is as it seems in this innocuous looking shelter and they soon begin to think that staying there may not have been a good idea.
Dead Birds was recommended to me a little while ago and I decided to rent it out to see what it was like. And whilst its title is misleading I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the film, it is by no means perfect but it is far from being a complete lemon. On one side the film is fairly original in that it is set during the American Civil War, and in that whole setup looked good to me, the uniforms and the war-weary look in the people's faces all went to create a world that seemed believable and convincing, (to me at least). But it also follows standard genre conventions in that we have a creepy house, complete with a large cornfield that is spooky by...

"I hardly think a few birds are going to bring about the end of t
Advantages: Classic Hitchcock - I can say no more !!
Disadvantages: None
...I'm starting this review with a quote from the Master himself, Alfred Hitchcock:
"When a new Hitchcock film appears, the public and critics sit back at the start and say to themselves, 'Let's see him scare me.' My job is to get them up on the edge of their seats, and to keep them there. It gets more difficult all the time because one must find new ways to surprise an audience. Any time a viewer of one of my films can say to himself, 'I knew that was coming,' I've lost him."
THE BIRDS
After his groundbreaking 1960 shocker 'Psyco', Alfred Hitchcock re-emerged three years later with 'The Birds' - a story of a California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, attacks by ordinary birds.
'The Birds' was based on the story of the same name written by Daphne Du Maurier - this was Hitchcock's third...

The Soul Bird
Advantages: Simple, Genuine, Good for kids
Disadvantages: Simple, More for kids
..."Deep down,
inside our bodies,
lives the soul.
No one has ever seen it,
but we all know it's there.
Not only do we know it's there,
we know what's in it, too"
My grandfather was a religious correspondent for the BBC, he also wrote many books about religion, but after many years of searching he decided that he was a Quaker. My grandmother was also a Quaker and a few months before she died she gave me The Soul Bird, I read it quickly and then put it on my book case and forgot all about it. After she was gone I spent some more time reading this book, it can be quite powerful.
The Soul Bird is written by Michal Snunit, an Israeli author born in 1940. She has taken on many literary roles from editing a weekly magazine to being a journalist for a daily paper or writing lyrics for children's musicals. She is best known for her...

Birds Eye Potato Waffles
Advantages: Taste good, handy to keep in the freezer
Disadvantages: On a personal level I prefer home-made potato products
...Birds Eye Potato Waffles were first introduced on the market in 1981 and are still as popular to this day as they were back then. I always keep a pack in my freezer as they are a firm favourite of my children. They are really versatile in the sense that they can be used as an accompianment alongside most dishes.
Birds Eye Waffles are rectangular in shape with a criss/cross pattern throughout. When cooked they have a golden brown, quite crispy exterior with fluffy white potato in the centre.
They can be grilled, baked or fried, though I prefer grilling as this is quick to do and the healthier option in comparison to frying. I have tried frying them but I have found they taste more of grease than potato and this really spoilt it for me, so I tend to stick to grilling them as this maximises the taste.
They contain no artificial...

Disadvantages: Not for bird haters or claustraphobics or clubbers.
...wonder whether he had thought of cancellation insurance should I have refused his offer. Mind you, he obviously knew I needed snapping up fast?
Our trip to the Seychelles involved sampling four of the Seychelle islands. This review will concentrate on the remote Bird Island, the most northerly of the Seychelles archipelago, 60 miles north of Mahe (the largest island in the group). The Seychelles are located 1600km east of Africa and northeast of Madagascar. They are beautiful tropical islands renowned for unspoilt beaches, flora and fauna which have largely been preserved as a result of careful eco-tourism planning.
☼ Getting there ☼
Bird Island is not easily reached. You will need to fly to Mahe (we went with Air Seychelles from Gatwick) and then travel by light aircraft to Bird Island. This is quite an experience in...

BIRD TELLS WIFE OF HUSBAND'S AFFAIR
Advantages: Very entertaining imitator's
Disadvantages: Messy and noisy
...I once had a mynah bird called Keo, named after a Cypriot beer. Why he was named after a Cypriot beer is somewhat diffuse as I don't particularly like beer and have no connection with Cyprus other than a couple of holidays in Ayia Napa. I suppose I just liked the sound of it at the time.
As you probably know, mynah birds are amazing imitators. If you think a parrot?s good, trust me, compared to a mynah, they have the talking age of a foetus. Well, maybe not quite that young but compared to the less spectacular looking mynah bird, their imitation skills really are quite basic.
Ours could imitate both my ex husband and myself perfectly, even down getting the accents right. He had the sound of the telephone ringing down to a fine art, and as his cage was against the wall that connected with the bathroom, the sound of the toilet...

Bird lives!
Advantages: The music, the directing, the performances.
Disadvantages: Very depressing.
...I bought 'Bird', the Charlie Parker story from Amazon, for £5.99.
Though the film was released initially in 1988 it has been quite hard to get on DVD (even though it was released in this format in 2006), for some reason, and as a big Charlie Parker fan I was thrilled to see lots of copies now available. It carries a British '15' rating. and is a mammoth 154 minutes long (yep, that is nearly three hours).
Clint Eastwood directed this film, partly as a labour of love, as it was never going to be an all time best seller or break any box office records, though it did win best actor at Cannes film festival for Forest Whitaker who plays Charlie Parker. Deservedly so, as Forest Whitaker puts in a dark, moody and believable performance, even some of his sax' 'playing' looks convincing. On top of that the New York Film critics award...

The Soup Kitchen for Glasson Birds
Advantages: Looks lovely and is very pracical.
Disadvantages: The plastic tray can be a little light.
...My daughters call me sad!!!
But I just LOVE feeding the birds that come in our garden.
Before I moved here I lived in a town location and the most exotic birds we got visitng were sparrows and the dreaded starlings.
But now I live in a very rural area and my property has the River Lune at my front gate and The Lancaster Canal at my back gate so we are very lucky with our feathered visitors.
We joke that we spend more on feeding the wildlife ( we also have a hedgehog house were we feed our constant prickly friends and have a family of ducks who visit us daily for their meals!!) than we do ourselves - and we could just be right!!!
Last year for the first time we had a family of blur tits that hatched in our nesting box and they were so very friendly, they would land on our table while we were eating...
