Etap Birmingham Centre, Birmingham
Advantages: cheap, clean, friendly staff
Disadvantages: quite a walk from town centre
...Etap Hotels are another budget hotel chain created by Accor, the creators of hotel giants Ibis. This 250 room complex is situtaed in the centre of Birmingham and all rooms cost £35, whether its a weekday or the weekend. But for this price, don't expect luxury acommodation, as luxury is probably the worst word to describe this hotel.
The rooms are clean and modern and sleep up to 3 people. In most cases, this is either a double or twin beds with a single bunk on top - not very glamourous but good for the money. You do get a television (complete with an array of English and European channels), but I can't guarantee that you'll get coffee and tea making facilities, as some rooms seem to be missing these. There is also no hairdryer or anything like that, but you can get one if pay a £10 deposit at reception - you will get this returned to...

Best Hotel in Birmingham City
Advantages: Everything about this hotel
Disadvantages: Christmas time Parties
...The Thistle Birmingham City Hotel is situated a few miles away from Birmingham International Airport, easily accessible from the major motorway network and close to New Street Station. I stayed at the hotel for 8weeks on a business trip and really enjoyed my stay there.
The rooms are very clean, its well maintained. Staff very friendly and helpful. During Christmas time there are loads of parties and the in house guests have no flexibility in the food timings which was a major draw back. Food was very good and so is the bar always well stocked!
You can have a short walk for your shopping to the City centre, Bull Ring and the Convention Centre.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and would return again....

City Inn - a hidden gem.
Advantages: Price, features of room, location
Disadvantages: err... food is a bit bland and pricey
...I think I spend far too much time in hotels, and can be quite demanding. That said, it is with pleasure I report that the City Inn in Birmingham is a hidden gem.
Location
The hotel is located in the trendy Brindley Place development just off Broad Street in Birmingham, and as such is ideally situated for pubbing, clubbing and general merriment and yet being secluded (for a city) enough for a bit of peace and quiet. Brindley Place itself is home to a variety of trendy bars and restaurants including the (in)famous Bank and various luxury apartments. It's a mainly pedestrianised area, and is easily accessible by foot bus or train from New Street station. The majority of other hotels in the area are located directly on Broad Street, which can be quite noisy with the drunken hordes clamouring around after about 10pm. Mind you don't get...

Great value in Berlin city centre
Advantages: Value
Disadvantages: Nothing springs to mind
...My friend and I went to Berlin earlier on this month for a short break to get away from the bad Scottish weather. We were away for three days and four nights and were looking for somewhere cheap but comfortable to stay. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn Express City Centre West.
Cost
Cost is always my prime consideration when making any purchase so I was delighted with the price of £27 per person per night for a twin room at the Holiday Inn Express, especially given the poor Euro exchange rate for tourists. This was a special offer from one of the many websites that offers good deals on hotels. The special offer gave 25% off the standard price so the standard price would be £36 per night. This is still pretty good value I think, for the reasons listed below in my review?
Booking
As mentioned above I booked through...

Botanical Birmingham
Advantages: Plenty to see, a relaxing escape from the city.
Disadvantages: Expensive for a one-off visit. Disappointing restaurant.
...botanists could see exotic plant varieties brought back from around the world. The gardens opened in 1832 to members of the Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society. During the later part of the nineteenth century, glasshouses were added, but the basic layout of the gardens remains still very much as Loudon planned.
Arrival at the Gardens
The Botanical Gardens are located in Westbourne Road, Edgbaston. This is to the south-west of the city centre, approximately 1.5 miles away. The gardens are well signposted from the ring-road, with brown tourist attraction signs. If you are approaching the gardens by car along the main Westbourne Road, be aware that the entrance is immediately left after a set of traffic lights. It's very easy to miss the entrance when driving, which means you then have to go back round the block as this...

Delta Hotel 42 The Damrak Amsterdam City Centre
Advantages: Superb Central Location
Disadvantages: Strict on Room Checkout Times
...street, it is an excellent location to relax over a good breakfast whilst watching the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. If you just fancy a snack, a few doors down from the hotel is 'Pizza M Slice' serving the best (yep you've guessed it) pizza in the city. A must try.
If you are travelling to Amsterdam by car (not recommended) the hotel has arranged a 15% discount off parking fees at a car park a few minutes away. Parking is very expensive in the city, and as the public transport is excellent and the majority of attractions are close by, a car really is not needed.
For those of a sporty nature there is a modern fitness centre 20 meters from the hotel, where, in cooperation with the fitness centre, there is a discount for guests.
All in all, the Hotel Delta is an ideal choice for the budget-minded traveler, very reasonable rates...

STAR CITY PT 1 - Reclining Seats - Oohh Err Missus
Advantages: Leg Room, Surround Sound, Air Conditioning, Quick Box Office Service
Disadvantages: £5.50 for an adult ticket!
...I wasn't too sure where to stick this op, as there are two categories on Ciao about StarCity as a shopping centre and Star City as a Cinema, and I wanted to write about both! So, being the mercenary that I am, this is the first in a two part series - two lots of 10p's!! - and deals with one of the most impressive multiplexes I've ever been to.
Star City was opened in July 2000 and was touted as the largest cinema in Europe - the Warner Bros website (www.warnervillage.co.uk) now says it's the largest in the UK so some dratted Europeans must have beaten us - but it is still huge. The Cinema boasts 30 - yes, you did read that right - screens and is pretty impressive on first sight. Anyway, I'll take you through everything you need to know, step-by-step.
We were visiting Star City at Birmingham from Coventry and so it was simple to...

Birmingham National Sealife Centre
Advantages: Interesting, factual and a great one for the kids!
Disadvantages: None in particular
...Having been to the Sealife Centre a couple of times when I was younger and living at home, I found this to be an extremely interesting attraction. Now I have my own 7 month old daughter, I decided to take her to the centre at Birmingham when we were visiting family for a week. The price was very reasonable, £14.95 per adult and free for our little one as she is under 3. We wondered round for a good 2.5 hours, looking at a number of different fish, all in tanks with bright colours. It is very well designed to keep the attention of young children, even as young as 7 months. There is a feely pool for children who are able to get close to the creatures, including sea anemones and crabs.
There is also a seahorse breeding facility at this particular centre,
which provides and interesting look at these sea creatures. You can also see giant...

Birmingham from Cheap to Chic... The City lowdown
Advantages: Great shopping mecca for every shopoholic
Disadvantages: None
...to a cosmopolitan city with a new following of fashion concious people is the arrival of stores such as the very first stand alone store in England out side of London of Louis Vuitton located on Temple Street. Urban Outfitters have also taken a space on Birmingham's New Street which is due to open early nexy year plus other companies are all looking for prime retail space within Birmingham.
If Night Life is what your after too Birmingham does not disapoint, You can strole along the 1 mile stretch which is known as Broad Street - although this is usually prone to drunken fights. The best place is to head to China Town with bars such as SoBar and Indie Bar offering a cool place to meet new people, the gay quater on hurst street also offers a great selection of clubs such as Route2 and DV8.
SO You want to Visit - Where to Stay...
