Especially for those who have obtained a copy of the recent facsimile copy of George Bradshaw's tourist's handbook this pictorial treasure trove of visual historic mapping will enable armchair time travel at its very best, transporting you back to Victorian Britain. You can read the many railway journey guides so powerfully described in the handbook whilst using this atlas to follow the route and all of the stations along the way. Core to Bradshaw's Railway Atlas of Great Britain and Ireland is the very last detailed railway map produced by George Bradshaw, originally published in 1852 .and recently re-mastered and art worked . Published one year before the passing of George Bradshaw, his railway Map of Great Britain and Ireland is a visual record of when train travel was at its height - when railways were really golden - and his guides burst with pride about them. This atlas is a culmination of over two years work, bursting with Victorian imagery of vignette views and vistas from around Bygone Britain. Bradshaw's mapping of the railways across England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Channel area of France is magnificently supplemented with no less than twenty detailed British Town Plans. These exquisite maps were originally published in 1851 by John Tallis, enabling the time traveller to stop off at main line stations and explore the labyrinths of Victorian town Streets and public places. In addition the atlas presents a further eight "Environs" maps by George Bradshaw; Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dublin, followed by his railway map of London covering a full page spread. The atlas concludes with a full index of stations referenced to the page they appear in the atlas, many also cross referenced to the page they are referred to in the recently re-published facsimile - Bradshaw's tourist guide. ... less

The West Midlands in the early 1960s was a hive of activity with Stourbridge Junction yards handling large tonnage's of freight both into an out of the Birmingham area. To the northwest, Shrewsbury handled a constant flow of passenger traffic with the Western region running London to Birkenhead services, plus through trains to the Cambrian coast. In addition, routes had to be found for north/south expresses, local branch trains and stopping trains. The steelworks at Brymbo is visited en route way to Chester, where heavy North Wales Coast holiday traffic compteted with freight workings for a path through the station. Marsden Rail 22: The Lickey Incline DVD - Cinerail

The most famous gradient in England - over 2 miles at 1 in 37.5 - and lying between Birmingham and Gloucester, it posed major operating difficulties during the steam era when banking of northbound trains was required. The programme begins at Stourbridge with a steam-hauled 'Carpet Special' in the station, plus views of the climb from the Town Goods Yard to the junction; followed by scenes at Kidderminster, with gravity-shunting in the extensive yards. At Worcester, the practice of combining the Hereford and Worcester portions of Paddington expresses is seen and at Ashchurch Junction main line expresses speed through as the Tewkesbury Branch train engine, a Midland Railway 3F, shunts its solitary coach. The Lickey Incline poses few challenges to modern diesel traction, but in this programme - filmed between 1960 and 1966 - the most modern locomotives seen are British Railways Type 3 and 4 diesel designs! However, the banking of all but the lightest of trains is why the Lickey Incline was fascinating and a range of steam classes, from the humble Jinty to the mighty 9F, are seen carrying out this arduous work. A look at the Western Region of British Railways from 1958 to 1965 covering all the major classes of ex- GWR motive power. There is Paddington in all its steam glory with Kings, Castles, Halls and pannier tanks. It was the starting point for a unique railtour in 1963 to Swindon Works behind 72006 "Clan Mackenzie". We join the tour and see Swindon Works while it was still overhauling steam followed by a visit to the shed. A return to Paddington for lineside action through Westbourne Park in 1962, more Kings, Castles, County, Hall and a view of 4704 the ultimate 2-8-0 of the GWR. Westward via Southall in 1963 to Maidenhead and a nostalgic look at the Marlow branch and its "donkey". At Reading, also in 1963, more Castle action and a couple of SR engines pass through en-route to Moreton yards. Station pilot was 7817 "Garsington Manor". Didcot provides us with another County class and the last GWR Castle "Great Western". Sapperton for the Chalford auto trains lead on to the Birmingham route at Hatton and yet another rare event, Bulleid Pacifics on football specials at Handsworth & Smethwick. Farewell to the Kings with 6018 to Swindon, then Oxford and the last steam train to Fishguard with 6859. Returning to London there is a look at the Brentford and Windsor branches before 7029's last Farewell tour. Lots of copper caps and lower quadrants! Cab Ride No.45/55 Dvd - Plymouth to Bristol - Bristol to Gloucester via Oxford, 2 x Dvds - Railway Recollections

Cab Ride No. 45/55 Dvd, 2 x Dvds Plymouth to Bristol - The former Great Western Main Line to the West Country is one of the most famous railway routes of all - for many people throughout this century it has been the route that took them on holiday and its famous landmarks of Dartmoor and the sea wall at Dawlish and Teignmouth epitomise that feeling. The legacy of Brunel's "Atmospheric Railway" over the hills of South Devon is a line full of character, with fierce gradients and sinuous curves. The South Devon connected with the Bristol and Exeter Railway at Exeter and the latters' straight and level run through Somerset is a strong contrast. This cab ride enables you to view these two railways as they are today - just as the driver sees it! We travelled aboard an HST set as the 13.04 working from Plymouth which runs via Birmingham and Derby to York. Our driver was A. Ricketts and InterCity Great Western's Chief Traction Inspector John Barrett rode with us. We filmed from Power Car 43178 on 12th October 1992. Bristol-Temple Meads to Gloucester via Oxford - This cab ride takes us from the former Great Western station at Bristol-Temple Meads up the severe climb to Filton Junction and Bristol-Parkway. From here we go to the modern Westerleigh Junction where a spur enables us to join the former Midland Railway's Birmingham main line at Yate, up which we travel as far as Gloucester. We filmed from the cab of HST Power Car No. 43178, accompanied by the Western Region's Chief Traction Inspector John Barrett. Our thanks are due to Inter City Great Western for organising this ride, which was the 13.04 from Plymouth to York train, reversing at Gloucester. Please note: There is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds. Approximately 160 minutes © Railway Recollections 2007 ... less

North Star South West: 47840 Penzance - DVD - Locomaster Profiles

47840 North Star was the fifth and final Virgin Class 47 to be repainted into an historic livery to commemorate the end of Class 47 haulage on Cross Country services. Representing the corporate BR blue era, the locomotive was a regular performer on Western Region passenger duties during the 1970s and early 1980s when it was numbered 47077. On August 19th 2002 the loco reverted to this historic identity when, together with 47847, it departed from Penzance with Virgin's final loco-hauled 1M56 08.46 service to Manchester. Three days previous, North Star was given a final solo outing on the same train. This programme, which is introduced by Chris Green, combines cab and lineside footage from both journeys to provide a nostalgic record of Virgin's last long-distance Class 47-hauled service. To capture 47840 hard at work, the loco is 'Wired for Sound' to capture the famous 'Sulzer' sound. With a demanding set of timings, North Star is soon put through its paces as it tackles a series of Cornish gradients - the 10-mile climb from Hayle to Redruth, the 1 in 78 standing start from Truro, the short sharp climb from Par to Treverrin Tunnel and the impressive slog up Largin Bank. After crossing the spectacular Royal Albert Bridge, the 1M56 passes through the Plymouth suburbs before encountering the fearsome 'banks' of Hemerdon and Dainton. There's a brief respite for the 47 as the train skirts the coastline along the sea walls of Teignmouth and Dawlish before reaching Exeter, after which there's a spirited run up to Whiteball summit. Some fast running ensues to Bristol from where there's a rousing assent to Filton. At Westerleigh Junction, the 1M56 heads north through Yate and Cheltenham to Bromsgrove which marks the start of the most demanding part of the journey - the infamous Lickey Incline. After reaching the summit at 40 mph, the journey continues through the Birmingham suburbs to reach New Street Station via Proof House Junction. ... less

Dover Priory Train Station
Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town
...History
Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed.
