...The first sight people sometimes get when landing at Don Muang airport – code BKK - is the strange sight of people playing golf in between the runways. This is just the first of many quirks you will either love or hate about Thailand and Bangkok.
The golf course is actually owned by the Air Force which shares the airport. Depending on your taxi route to / from the runway you will see the military planes and hangers. The airport is actually due to be replaced by a new airport - Suvarnabhumi - being built to the north east of Bangkok which is due to open in 2004. Well, the Prime Minister said it would, so it must be true!
Transport
The airport itself is about 25km north from the “centre” of Bangkok. It is easily reached by car, bus or train. There is no link to the BTS Skytrain but the new one supposedly...
...Bangkok (Don Muang) airport is 23km outside of Bangkok, although the city itself is so sprawling these days that you will see no gaps or countryside. It is connected via a tollway to the city.
It is actually a quick and efficient airport although not one where you would wish to spend too many hours in a stopover. If you have three or more hours you can get a taxi into BKK - see below - and find food, rest and T-shirts a plenty!
English travellers will have no problems there; although Thai is a non-English script language English signs predominate and most people speak some English. Check-in facilities are quite good - they have a strange system where they scan your hold luggage on entry to the terminal and then seal it with a banding machine - and there are fewer queues in the International Terminal than most equivalents.

A little aprehensive about the Airline as we had never heard of them before and the price was almost too good to be true.
Fearing the worse, our experinece was not only good but outstanding .. not one single cause for complaint on a the fully booked flights. The service both on the ground and in the air was polite, efficient and highly professional. Everything was immaculate from the staff, plane facilities to the presentation of dinner. The onflight entertainment was great with a huge range of new and classic movies, language learning games, TV series shows, albums, a vast array of flight route maps and details - right though to live front and below viewing cameras ...
It was an absoulte pleaseure to fly with Etihad and I would suggest you give them a try...

Advantages: Five Star Service, Low Fares, Very New Aircraft, Generous Frequent Flyer Plan Disadvantages: Change of Plane at Doha...a very cramped Airport. Inconsistant Product.
...My experiences with this airline started in November 2004, when I managed to book a round trip to BKK for £380 including tax from Manchester.
I had heard great things about the airline, which had already been awarded 5* status by Skytrax, the Airline quality passenger forum.
When we boarded our flight, there was already someone sitting in our seats, but the Purser quickly came to our rescue and we were shown to Business Class for the 1st leg to Doha. Staff were wonderful throughout, and so keen to impress, I couldn't help but wonder how long they will be able to keep this up for. I hope they can maintain the high standards they have now.
I was so impressed that I have now paid to go Business Class ever since..... Qatar are a fraction of the cost of Thai or B.A. and I am pleased to have found them as I make the trip to BKK...

...contrast, calling Trailfinders was a lot less painful. They had been able to get me a flight from GLW > LHR > BKK > USM for a total of £666 return, including an upgraded seat type for the LHR > BKK sectors. This compared favourably with BA, who were a similar price for economy seating. I had never flown with the airline in question and was suitably apprehensive, but the trailfinders member I spoke to was very reassuring about the airline (one of the largest airlines you have never heard of apparently!).
My other trip was to Australia, again GLW > LHR > SIN > BNE > SYD > SIN > LHR > GLW, booked last minute for a competitive price, and included an upgrade to World Traveller Plus on the London - Singapore leg.
As with booking any trip independently, there are a lot of pieces that you need to organise, and Trailfinders are able to hold seats...

...LHR to BKK is approx 11.5 hours, while the return is an hour longer..
The seat pitch in Premium Economy is 38? which is a lot better than a 30-32? pitch which you would get in economy cabins, particularly at the price, which was comparable to the best BA deal I could get. If you really want to splash out, then the business and first cabins have pitches of around 62? and 71? respectively. The premium economy seats have separate TV?s with eight TV channels, plus audio channels to choose from.
My ticket in Premium economy cost £666 plus airport taxes of £83. This included the shuttle from GLW ? LHR and the Bangkok Airways flight from BKK ? Koh Samui.
So in summing up, all in all I think that Eva Air offer excellent value for money (especially if you book though a decent agent such as Trailfinders) and if you have booked, you have...

Advantages: Lovely hotel with Brilliant views of the river close to transport links. Disadvantages: The hotel is very high not good if your scared of heights. Restaurant pricey and not worth it.

Location.
The Lebua Hotel is an all suite hotel which is ideally centrally located on the Silom road in the business district near to the Chao Phraya River. Excellent views of the Chao Phraya River and Central Bangkok can be had from the hotel and the hotels distinctive gold Dome can be seen for miles around.
Getting there:
It is approximately 40 minutes by car from Bangkok?s new Suvarnabhumi International Airport. (BKK). It is 30 minutes by car from Bangkok?s original Dom Mueang airport (DMK) which mainly handles internal flights.
The nearest sky train station is Saphan Taksin which is approximately ten minute walk away which can whisk you off in air-conditioned comfort all over Bangkok. It is also near the Saphan Taksin pier where an abundance of water buses and water taxis ply...
