Upon Westminster Bridge-Wordsworth/London-Blake

Advantages: Memorable poem!
Disadvantages: N/A

...Compare and contrast Wordsworth's and Blake's poems. What do the poems tell you about the differing attitudes towards the city? The two poems tell us a lot about the poet's respective attitudes towards the city. We learn of their (occasionally) differing attitudes towards industrialisation, nature and the like. We can observe how the two poets have used different techniques such as structure, rhyme, imagery etc. to enhance their messages. The poet William Wordsworth was born in 1770 and by the time he died on Shakespeare day in 1850 he had influenced English poetry as a whole by producing some of the greatest works in history. He was educated at grammar school and lived much of his life in amongst the northern lakes in the heart of the Lake District. The poet, artist, and printmaker William Blake on the other hand was not...

London by Wordsworth and Blake

Advantages: Two great poets sentiments on the capital
Disadvantages: none, both great...

...A comparison of 'London' by William Blake and 'Composed upon Westminster Bridge' by William Wordsworth. These two poems were written within eight years of one another, the first being 'London' in 1794 and then 'Composed upon Westminster Bridge' in 1802. They are both Romantics and typical of the style, both have an emotional and expressive freedom in the way they are written and a seemingly honest view of real life. Both poems have an immediate link in the form of the mention of London or places related to London in the tittle, this means that even before reading the poem you would expect that London or some aspect of life in London would be a theme in both poems. London could be considered a major theme of both poems but for completely contrasting reasons; 'London's theme is more about the people of London and the conditions...

William Blake's works

Advantages: Beautifully written poems concerning the effects of innocence and experience
Disadvantages: The language is often hard to read without concentration

...In his poems, William Blake has a number of underlying messages riddled in them. He seems to agree and disagree with certain things in a number of his poems which I will now discuss. In Songs of Experience, the poem called The Garden of Love shows some of the things that Blake seems to disagree with. In The Garden of Love I believe Blake tries to convey that as a child grows up things change. He seems to think that these changes are bad, for example the chapel replaced his childhood green where he had played and instead of flowers on the green, tombstones in a graveyard. I think he is saying that childhood was a happier, carefree time and as adulthood abruptly arises, you lose the innocence of your childhood. In William Blake?s case, things become darker. He seems to disagree with this. Also he puts across the feeling of being...

Review of William Blake

PLEASE READ BLAKE. HE IS AN AMAZING POET.

Advantages: A masterpiece, which speaks to everyone.
Disadvantages: None.

...against. Coleridge and Wordsworth said that poets must echo the natural rhythms of English and write directly and simply so that they spoke to everyone. However, even their wonderful "Lyrical Ballads" is predated by Blake in England and by Burns in Scotland. Revolution was in the air and it was time to cast off the "Mind-forg'd manacles" of Latin and Greek. I will take Blake's "The Sick Rose" from Songs of Experience as an example: O rose, thou art sick! The invisible worm That flies in the night, In the howling storm, Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy, And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy. Immediately you can see Blake's individual poetic voice - direct and simple, without any embellishment or adornment. In eight short lines it speaks volumes - and is much more interesting than the guff spouted by Pope...

Review of Songs Of Innocence and Experience - William Blake

Poet, Painter, Prophet. Blake, A Great Man.

Advantages: Fantastic Poetry, True Visionary, 18th Century Surrealism, Strong Belief and Opinions, Insight into 18th century early Romantic Poetry
Disadvantages: Sometimes Confusing

...also, his works are very moving, very mystical, he was torn between his religious beliefs, as he worshipped God, but he hated the church. He was of the lower class in London, and lived a harsh life, yet he called himself a "mental prince" composing songs and writing poetry in the last days of his life, when he knew he was dying. I think Blake is an insight into a mind so unique, so creative - pure genius, and he's completely under-rated. He paved the way for poets such as Wordsworth, and yet in many circle's his greatness is unrecognised. Some people disregard him as a surrealist, a babbling prophet.. but it is these qualities that make him so unique. He wrote several books of poetry. "Songs of Innocence and Experience" celebrates life and growth from childhood to adulthood. "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" is profoundly mystical...

Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey, a beautiful poem by Wordsworth

Advantages: A beautifully written poem that can be read over and over to bring the reader a sense of peace
Disadvantages: A rather long poem that can be tedious to get through

...Romantic poetry often concerns itself with the power of nature. This theme is also especially predominant in Samuel Coleridge?s poetry. This love of the natural world is often linked with rural imagery from the British countryside. Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey contains many images illustrating the beauty of the countryside and the peaceful lives of its inhabitants. This is emphasized when put in contrast with the dark and foreboding nature of the urbanisation of the countryside. It begins with Wordsworth reminiscing about the beauty of the abbey and its continued beauty even after 5 years. Wordsworth uses beautiful imagery to describe the surrounding cliffs and sea. The murmur of sound allows for an undertone of isolation and peace. This creates the image of a sanctuary for reflection for the abbey itself. By using the word...

Review of Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey - William Wordsworth

The unsung genius of William Blake

Advantages: beautiful, prophetic and soul/ life enhancing
Disadvantages: no

...The work of William Blake is just heartbreakingly beautiful. If the concept of God revolves around the presence of love and happiness and joy and passion then the poetry and mythology of this man is holy. Indeed his work is so astonishing that the interpretation of his poetry has been a reference point for my development as a human being for the last year: The Blossom Merry Merry Sparrow, Under leaves so green, A happy Blossom Sees you swift as arrow Seek your cradle narrow Near my Bosom. Pretty Pretty Robin, Under leaves so green, A happy Blossom Hears you sobbing, sobbing. Pretty Pretty Robin Near my Bosom. Where can one begin? Why would someone want to start picking this entity apart? Its seems so pure and untouchable- the perfect metaphor for the little sparrow, the singular rhyming couplet in both verses...

Blake 7 Servalan 0

Advantages: Was an exciting series
Disadvantages: Showing it's age

...Blake's 7 first hit our screens some 20 years ago and the opening logo promised a lot. After all if they can produce such a smart emblem the programme had to be well made. Well the story lines were good but some of the acting was, to be kind, hardly worthy of an oscar. The BBC had excelled themselves in the making of this series but were unable to sustain the standard and the series quietly petered out. Maybe it was money or ratings but whatever it was the series ended without an end. Viewed twenty years later the sets do seem to be wooden and cheap but at the time the thrill of seeing a decent sci fi programme blinded us to the deficiencies. The story in essence was Blake, a wrongly convicted felon was being transported to a penal colony off world when the opportunity arose to escape with a handful of like...

Blakes 7 the orginal Star Trek

Advantages: characters, deaths, special effects
Disadvantages: Bit dated now

...Have you ever noticed how if you turn the Blake's 7 logo on the side it become they Star Trek logo?? Well I have although I actually watched all the Star Trek series far before Blake's 7, Blake's 7 was the original and as always the best. Not to mention far less predictable. I wasn't born when it first came out but Skt tv filled me in, I mean in Star Trek none of the main characers ever dies (Bar Tasha Yarr) whereas Blake's 7 was a changing cast all the time, people dies people moved on, far more believable. In Star Trek the only people to die were ensigns and Crew men. Strange that!! Basically Blake's 7 had excellent characters esspecially Sevalan and Travis and the main characters changed from time to time but still allowed you to become familiar with them and they all interacted well. Even the computers Slave and Orac have...
