Alicante Airport
Advantages: Good location, decent amenities
Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...I use Alicante airport for my annual break in Spain and find it is convenient and fairly easy to use.
It is situated just outside Alicante on the Costa Blanca, around 46.5km from Benidorm. It is within driving distance of Valencia, around two hours and 179km.
Arrivals
You would probably fly to Alicante if you were staying in Benidorm, Torrevieja, Altea, Calpe, Moraira or Teulada. It is popular with budget airlines such as Easyjet and Bmibaby and there are flights from many regional airports in the UK such as East Midlands, Liverpool, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted to name a few.
There are around ten car hire companies who operate out of the airport including the big names like Avis, Europcar and Hertz, these desks are located in the arrivals hall and can get busy at peak times. There are also local car hire companies who...

Alicante
Advantages: Beautiful,Clean city
Disadvantages: Expensive,hilly,hardly any English spoken
...After having a day trip to Alicante a couple of years ago (Well actually 2 hours on a Thomson excursion) while staying in Benidorm,my wife & myself decided to use my last 4 days holiday entitlement to have a short break in Spain & found a really good value holiday in Alicante courtesy of Easyjet.
The idea was that 4 days would give us plenty of time to have a good look around the city & as we are into that sort of thing, the castle.
The flight went OK but on the Alicante newsletter which I am subscribed to It recommended getting an excellent free map of the city from the information desk at the airport.
Well this is where things started to go wrong - I could not find an information desk so we decided to catch the bus & get one in Alicante.
As it was Sunday all the information places were closed so we finished up having to pay 5 euros...

Alicante city is a wonderful gap in this winter
Advantages: Excellent weather, warming sun, gorgeous seaside, awesome nightlife
Disadvantages: Beaches might be too crowded in the summer, no winter sports to do
...Let's go and do a bit of Alicante travel. The first place to visit is the gorgeous beachfront by the harbour, then along the main pedestrian walkway, the ´Explanada de España´, a stunning promenade by the sea decorated with black, red and cream marble and surrounded by beautiful palm trees nearby the street shops and cafes. This is a striking place where you can enjoy an outdoor seafront concert in the balmy summery Sunday mornings and bank holidays.
Touring towards the center, northwest of the ´Explanada´, we can find the impressive Cathedral of Saint Nicholas surrounded by the narrow streets of the old quarter of ´El Barro´, where the best nightlife and some of the cheapest accommodation can be found. Walking towards the southwest by ´Calle de Italia´ we bump into the main tourist information and post offices as well as the central bus...

Blaupunkt Canberra C31
Advantages: Excellent radio both at FM & AM
Disadvantages: Tape player (No CD)
...this blaupunkt car radio has an excellent radio front end at both FM & (mostly) AM! Its ability to receive AM (MW) radio broadcasts with the usual very short FM whip antennas that are commonly found at newer cars, is a real plus! And the sound on AM isn't bad at all. It does have a good AM IF bandwidth filter probably, that allow you to listen good sounded AM stations, with a quality (at least an AM quality that most newer radios doesn't provide for the forgotten ? MW band), while keeping the selectivity needed for first adjacent channel intereference out. A better noise blanker filter, or a faster AGC wil help a little at city terrains where the manmade static noises are higher!
For FM the sound is good (take in account the overcompressed FM modulated signals that most stations have now) and its sensitivity is good enough to get...

Blaupunkt TravelPilot in Fords
Advantages: An idea if you really don't know the area.
Disadvantages: Limited, outdated mapping, not so easy to use
...In our brand new Fiesta, delivered this month, the Blaupunkt TravelPilot comes fitted in a unit combined with the radio.
To try this system out, over a period of three weeks, and a total of about 600 miles, entirely within my home county of West Yorkshire, i ran the TravelPilot alongside my own local knowledge of the area built up over 17 years of driving around the area.
To enter a destination it is necessary to go through a menu and a series of entries not wholly unlike entering a text message on a mobile phone. There is a form of predictive texting, which can be quite useful.
The problem I found, though, was that before I could find the way to, say, Huddersfield Police Station I needed to know what road it is in. There seems to be no provision for places like hospitals or police stations as destinations.
Back to the Ato...

LEAVE THE RAIN 4 SUNSHINE IN SPAIN
Advantages: Climate ... Pretty cheap ...Breathtaking places
Disadvantages: Can get very hot in peak season & high traffic congestion
...Alicante (Spain) is like my second home , although I have recently bought an apartment in Guardamar Del Segura (Alicante), thirty minutes drive from Alicante city . I have been visiting this part of Southern Spain for more than twenty years. During my twenty year visit , I have seen Alicante & its surrounding towns turn from shabby non-existent places into bustling and vibrant resorts. Anybody visiting Alicante & its surrounding resorts today , would not believe the dramatic changes that have taken place over the last 20 years or so. The scale of growth & expansion in the Alicante province is truly amazing - it no longer plays second fiddle to cities such as Barcelona & Madrid. This beautiful city & its neighbouring resorts all of which lie on the Costa Blanca coastline are growing not only in size but in popularity. So much so , that...

Costa Blanca landing strip
Advantages: Cool, Clean, Plenty of seats in departures, Ideal size.
Disadvantages: Cramped Car Park can be like a Maze!
...No matter how many times I fly to Spain, my first impression of Alicante airport is always "I didn't expect it to be this warm" as inevitably disembarking from the aircraft involves walking accross the tarmac to the arrivals hall and I start to peel off the layers that have protected me from the in-flight air-con on the way from the UK!
The arrivals hall at Alicante is fairly simple with about 6 luggage belts, loos, plenty of trolleys and an bureau de change. Baggage arrival time seems on a par with most tourist airports to me.
About a dozen car rental desks are located along the corridor that you pass through from the arrivals hall to the main part of the airport. Car's can be hired on spec, however it is always much cheaper to research prices on-line prior to your trip and book in advance, even if it's just 48 hours before...
