Lucca revisited

...Ah, holiday memories. We stayed just outside Lucca in a lovely converted farmhouse with a beautiful pool surrounded by olive and oleader trees and stunning views of the mountains. Lucca itself has the beautiful circular Piazza Anfiteatro at its centre, where 4 or 5 storey terracota and yellow painted buildings curve around enclosing you in another world. Cafe tables around the edge let you sit and watch the world go by. The whole city is surrounded by a huge, very wide 16 th century city wall. We hired bicycles and cycled around the tree-lined pathway that runs along the top. From here you can catch glimpses of the narrow little streets within where much of it is pedestrianised, apart from the obligatory mad moped riders! Lucca also has a tower with a large tree growing from the top and another even taller tower next...

HOME COMFORTS or NOT IN LUCCA

Advantages: Cheap and Location
Disadvantages: Not Onsuite and no breakfast

You can also see photos of the Rooms on that site) Now I have said it is Cheap and no breakfast ,DONT TURN OFF JUST YET, it does have other attributes. First you have to find the place. We arrived as most do by Train from Pisa where we had flown into. The Airport at Pisa is only 3 miles from the Railway station, then about 35 mins on train to Lucca. You come out of the station at Lucca and are faced with what they call the Meadow. This is a grassy park area that lies outside the WALLS, yes WALLS. These you have to either Get over or walk round to one of the main gates. Lucca is a BEAUTIFUL WALLED TOWN...

Advantages: Excellent radio both at FM & AM

...this blaupunkt car radio has an excellent radio front end at both FM & (mostly) AM! Its ability to receive AM (MW) radio broadcasts with the usual very short FM whip antennas that are commonly found at newer cars, is a real plus! And the sound on AM isn't bad at all. It does have a good AM IF bandwidth filter probably, that allow you to listen good sounded AM stations, with a quality (at least an AM quality that most newer radios doesn't provide for the forgotten ? MW band), while keeping the selectivity needed for first adjacent channel intereference out. A better noise blanker filter, or a faster AGC wil help a little at city terrains where the manmade static noises are higher! For FM the sound is good (take in account the overcompressed FM modulated signals that most stations have now) and its sensitivity is good enough to get...

To try this system out, over a period of three weeks, and a total of about 600 miles, entirely within my home county of West Yorkshire, i ran the TravelPilot alongside my own local knowledge of the area built up over 17 years of driving around the area. To enter a destination it is necessary to go through a menu and a series of entries not wholly unlike entering a text message on a mobile phone. There is a form of predictive texting, which can be quite useful. The problem I found, though, was that before I could find the way to, say, Huddersfield Police Station I needed to know what road it is in. Advantages: Large, roomy and clean with wonderful staff.

...Having stayed in Lucca a few years back we decided to go again this December for a short break before Christmas. Our hotel this time was outside the old walls, so asked the hotel to recommend somewhere to eat our first night. Mauricio told us he had booked us into ALEA, just 500 yards from the hotel. We where not disappointed. ALEA, is a just 1 mile from the historical centre of Lucca on the main road to Pescia. You cannot miss it as it is on the left hand side going out of town, with plenty of parking, full glass frontage, with a very warm welcome from the staff. We where booked in for 8-30pm, so arrived a little before but where shown directly to our table. San Remo CD34 - Style, Performance AND subtlety?

...purchased a small cable from Blaupunkt for about £5, which plugs into the rear of the unit. Simply tuck the cable carefully around your dashboard so it pops out the front somewhere and plug in to your MP3 player. Although it doesn't support changing tracks from the front panel of the unit, it offers an inexpensive and uncomplicated solution to releasing your iPod in your car! The slot at the rear of the unit for the MP3 cable can also be used to cable up a CD changer if you decide to add one later! As mentioned above, the only possible downside to this unit is the glare in the sun. If the sun shines directly on the front panel, the white display becomes hard to read, although I'm sure this is the same for other white-on-black head units! All in all, a superb CD Head-Unit for your car - Looks great, sounds great and with minimum fuss...

...Blaupunkt - a name to get your teeth round !! I bought this about 2 years ago as I knew the Company produced superb ICE units. I wanted DAB and the ability to play MP3 tracks - this unit gave me all this and a lot more besides. Appearance - pleanty of bright lights and a permanently moving graphic equaliser on the display sit between the two main control clusters. The graphic EQ can be turned off in Menu options and the whole display has different brightness levels so you will always find one to suit. The top of the display gives information about the audio source. For radio broadcasts, that means radio channel for FM/MW/LM (yes...all three wavebands) or the DAB channel name and the scrolling information feed if you are using the DAB channel.
