Advantages: The Ramones first album... Perfect Punk Pop

...This album lasts about 30 minutes and came out around late 1975. There's fourteen tracks all clocking around two minutes or less. It's a historic album coz it's their debut, and in todays CD orientated socuiety , "It's Alive" may be a better purchase, being longer , live and Ramones. It opens with "Blitzkrieg Bop", which was a single, minimal chords and lyrics and lots of repetition and no guitar solos ,just bits where the Joey the singer doesn't sing. It also contains the complete story of Troilus and Cressida (or substitute any other pair of lovers names there) in two minutes in the sublime "I don't wanna walk around with you". Titles like "Judy is a Punk","Beat on the Brat (with a baseball bat)", make this a superb album. They're a wonderfully funny cartoon rock'nroll band. Advantages: Features including 'Making Of...', subtitles and plenty of content
Disadvantages: Not so interesting for fans of more recent Rammstein material

..."Herzeleid" at the 100 Jahre Rammstein Arena in Berlin (1996). To someone who expects a show full of explosions, fireballs and flamethrowers, I expect Rammstein's forthcoming Live DVD (expected around September 2006) may be more to your liking. The other part of the DVD is the TV trailer: "Achtung Blitzkrieg!" which is worth watching. It contains a mixture of clips of live Rammstein performances, TV commercials, interviews, awards speeches, videos and more. The section gets its name from an awards acceptance speech by Paul (one of the guitarists), simply: "Achtung Achtung, schnell schnell, Blitzkrieg, auf Wiedersehen" - an amusing moment as he basically makes a sentence ("Warning warning, quickly quickly, Blitzkrieg [Lightning War], goodbye") of German words recognised by foreigners. Advantages: Just a stunning live album - perfect in every respect
Disadvantages: None whatsoever

...of the classics are included, such as "Beat on the Brat", "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from which the legendary "Hey Ho, Let's Go" chant derives), "Rockaway Beach" and Sheena is a Headbanger". But it's the sheer quality of the recording that is so amazing. There are dozens of Ramones live bootlegs to be had these days but none come even close to the superb sound quality on this album. Advantages: The best album in the world ever

...island disc this would be it. From the opening "Rockaway Beach" to the closing "We're a Happy Family" you have twenty eight pieces of brilliance. This is one CD that you will never program, as ever track is as good as each other. Your treated to "Surfin' Bird" (the first ever Surf Song which was nothing to do with surfing , orginally by the Trashmen and later covered by The Cramps) one of the longer tracks at 2.19. It's got "Lets Dance", "Sheena is A Punk Rocker" , "Blitzkrieg Bop" , in fact all of the hits and lots more. In fact this is probably the best album ever made....probably It's on mid price so you've no excuse for not buying it...so just buy it. You may have gathered that I think it's quite good I've deliberately put that it's completely unoriginal, it is , but no one does the Ramones as good as the Ramones, and this them... Read review

Advantages: 30 classic songs from the best US punk band ever... for a fiver!!!
Disadvantages: The possibility of doing yourself an injury while leaping around to this!

...Hey Ho Lets Go... well that's one way to start a Ramones review! So, how to define the sound of this seminal New York punk band? To me, they're a sort of new wave Beach Boys, with a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound and elements of early rock'n'rollers such as Eddie Cochran can be heard in the simple structure of the songs. To the album... what do you get? One CD, 30 songs, averaging around the 2 minute to 2:30 mark in length. No 15 minute prog rock epics here! The tracks are from 1976 to 1987, and include many classics such as I Wanna Be Sedated, Teenage Lobotomy, Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?, Sheena Is a Punk Rocker, Blitzkrieg Bop, Rockaway Beach, Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, Psycho Therapy, Wart Hog, Somebody Put Something in My Drink, KKK Took My Baby Away and Rock 'N' Roll High School. Advantages: Excellent Summarisation of the history of the Ramones
Disadvantages: Some great tracks are missing

...where species of tiliobites bear the names: Mackenziurus johnnyi, Mackenziurus joeyi, Mackenziurus deedeei, and Mackenziurus ceejayi. This CD contains 18 of the best Ramones tracks (Surfin' Bird, Blitzkrieg Bop) but in my opinion, that is not enough, tracks such as "The KKK took my baby away" are missing. However, this CD would be ideal for people who are looking for an introduction into the New York Punk scene as it summarises the Ramones well but for fans like me, more would be needed for me to buy it. The lyrics aren't thought provoking but then again the Ramones were more known for their sound rather than thier lyrics. Be warned: if you thinks that this will sound like any of today's "punk" bands, you couldn't be more wrong.... Read review

Advantages: Funny, moving, insightful

...the biggest buzz was recognising the different areas and schools that he talks about with great fondness. I personally found his thoughts on stand up comedy to be very insightful towards an industry that does not get enough publicity. I should point out that the sections on his punk rock youth and football were the parts that especially rang true for me. It is very rare that somebody explains how they felt the first time they heard the Ramones song 'Blitzkrieg Bop', and even rarer to see it done as well as Frank did it. Similary, I can not point to a better example of an explanation as to why people are in love with football. Frank does this exquisitely. In short, if you have any interest in Frank, football, punk, Birmingham, oh, and drinking, then buy this book, you'll find yourselves nodding with agreement all the way through.... Read review

Advantages: Twelve varied songs
Disadvantages: It was only last year you gave the South a tenner for 'Gaze'!

You'll be hearing some for the first time, and then of course the chances are that at least one of the twelve is already a favourite and you're just itching to see what the band have done to it. 'Rebel Prince' and 'Blitzkrieg Bop' are next up. The album has just hit its peak in this reviewer's opinion with 'Can't Take It Anymore', and these songs suffer from their sequence in the play list more than for any other reason. I suppose the whole point of the record is to do clever, quirky South style versions of old classics, but the concept seems to be wearing a little thin on 'Blitzkrieg Bop'! Luckily 'I'm Stone In Love With You' is perfectly placed and perfectly performed. I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but I was woken in the middle of the night during the US elections by next door's radio playing the original of this song... Read review
