A big blue.

Advantages: Kyle - in a seedy sort of way.
Disadvantages: Nope.

..., the same set designers and the same musicians working on many of his projects. This is obviously a subject matter that lies deep in his heart, otherwise he would have left it here, at Blue Velvet, as the film realises its intent extremely well. The film is grey in a middle class sort of way; there are still blue skies and the birds still sing, but the foreboding ordinariness of Lumberton is heavy on your shoulders. The sets are uninspiringly sparse and driveling bad American taste; nothing detracts from the characters and the storyline, and only a few props help along the way (Dorothy's son's hat). Lynch has his own sort of stereo typing going on: There is always the innocent stuck in the middle of the filth fest, there is always the rabid madman. Take a walk on the dark side

Advantages: Powerful, slightly surreal, interesting, brilliant performance from Dennis Hopper
Disadvantages: A bit far-fetched in parts

Prior to my viewing, I was warned about some of the sex and violence content, so was interested to see if it outstripped a lot of other similar movies I?ve become familiar with. Straight away, my interest was held?.but, I found myself becoming a bit irritated by the musical score; for instance, I can?t abide the song Blue Velvet! For me, it didn?t meld well with what was happening on screen and wasn?t subtle enough ? although, later in the film some popular standards are used which appear to have been chosen as an atmosphere-enhancing tool down the route of all things sinister, contrasting the innocence of the songs with the evil which was happening on the screen?.maybe the choice of the song Blue Velvet was for the same reason.
