Advantages: Plenty. Residual values are also truely astonishing!
Disadvantages: The rear doors - they don't open very wide and it's hard to manage getting very young children and the elderly in and out

...My wife and I have had our fair share of cars over the past 5 years or so - about 12 in total - and each one was very different to its predecessor. For example, we went from a Ford Escort to a Peugeot 206; a BMW Z3 to a VW Golf; from a LandRover Discovery to Porsche 911; and from a BMW 330d Sport to a Fiant Punto Mia (1.2). Most recent ly we changed from a BMW X3 to a BMW 116i Sport. If asked to choose which of all the cars we have owned I would recommend the most, I would say that depended to whom the recommendation was being made; however, if like us you have a young family and an active lifestyle, although you might imagine the versatility of a 4x4 such as the Discovery would be a good bet to get my vote, I would honestly have to say that, pound for pound, the 1 series has been the best buy by far. ...A nice man in a white van decided to go into the back of my little Renault Clio and wrote it off, therefore having children, I needed a car pretty quickly, as their school was too far to go by bus or train. A friend that wasn't using his BMW any more said that I could have his. So I test drove it and decided there and then this was the car for me. Price? The price of a BMW 316i compact differs to whether you buy this car new or second hand. The prices range from £14,500 new to £1500 second hand in poor condition. I paid £2,500 for my 1998 BMW from a friend, which was in great condition, however had high mileage. The car I got had a full BMW service history. As it did have a full service, I decided that the price was good for the car. I am sure you can get some great car for about this price if you were buying new, however... Read review

...This review is meant to focus more on the car's performance on the road, and not so much on the financial aspects and inusrance details. The BMW 1 Series, is BMW's 2nd attempt to create a small, hatchback car, the previous one being the 3-Series Compact, which accroding to popular opinion was definetely not one of BMW's best. My family were in the market for a new car, and my father was looking to buy a small practical city car, and had practically settled on the VW Golf 5. However when we both attended a car exhibition, I completely fell in love with the looks of the 1 series. After constant haggling on my part, I managed to persuade him to take the 1 series for a test drive. And that was when he too fell in love with it and settled on it. ...As a qualified mechanic and the owner of god knows how many cars over the years I have decided the time has come to do an automobile review and what better to review than my one time pride and joy sadly no longer with me my BMW 320i convertible. I bought my BMW in 2003 it was 2 years old and set me back around 12 thousand pounds which was roughly half the cost of buying a new one and was at the time a very good deal. I fell in love with the car after one test drive and just had to have it. Although there have been many different versions of the 320i over the years with very different specs the one I bought was pretty top of the range and had the majority of extras available. I am of course reviewing the car from my own personal opinion so this review will contain information on the extras my BMW had but do not expect to find... Read review

Advantages: Good car
Disadvantages: ill Manners, and a lack of care

...I bought a 325i here early part of the year and thought great the very car i was after though a j reg and 14 year old it was immaculate and had full service history. It even had the original first aid kit still in wrappers and original torch in the glove box. A kind neighbour decided to reverse his stinky big black volvo into the side front wing and steering parts, so after much barging i finnally got his insurance to accept me having it repaired at BMW Ocean at Falmouth Cornwall, after this all took 4 weks to setup. It needed a new wing and full lazer wheel and steering setup and test to see if anything was bent or twisted. After all the hassle with the assessor and insurance i finally got a repair date, so i booked the car in and waited. The day i dropped the car off i was told "it wasn't today it was tomorrow" so ileft... Read review

...My first taste of the BMW experience was behind the wheel of a 1999 BMW 323iSE. I immediately became addicted! The car was bought second hand from a franchise dealer, as a replacement for my tired Peugeot 405. The BMW had previously been used as a company car, and as such, had a high mileage (it was less than 3 years old, but had covered 67,000 miles). However, the BMW service history was complete, and as it had just received a major service, it would not need to visit the garage again for 15,000 miles. The specification on the car was good, though it did lack some desirable items - instead of leather (a 'must have' on a BMW) there was Anthracite cloth and the car had a manual transmission, rather than the sought after automatic. ...My first BMW was an old shape 12 year old 728i, even for its age it drove like a dream. I fell in love with BMW engineering. The second was a new shape 318i, this was my first out of the showroom BMW and it was great fun to drive. At the end of March the 318i went back to the lease company an I decide to buy my own and take the company car allowance I get from work. I saw a beautiful diamond black 330D Sport priced at 33K in the local BMW showroom in Doncaster. The only drawback I thought wrongly was the Automatic gearbox. Well it had been a while since having an automatic and I wanted this car there and then as the lease on my old car was near expiring, ( took 2 weeks )I gave it a go and bought it. ...My wife and I have owned a 3 series BMW since 1974. The first one was a 316i (1596cc)with manual gearbox. The car was completely reliable and very well made, and the paint finish was faultless. Servicing was every 6,000 miles, although perhaps more frequent than other cars at that time, the cost of the service was as cheap, perhaps cheaper than that of other foreign cars. The second BMW we bought, in August 1997, was a 318iSE (1796cc)with automatic gearbox, again completely reliable but the paint finish was showing signs of not being as well finished off as the previous model, especially around the wheel acrches, inner boot lid bonnet etc. The servicing intervals however were longer, every 8,000 miles and again the servicing price was competative, the BMW labour costs seemingly cheaper than those of a Ford garage.
