...I used to go to Barcelona at least four times a year but just lately I've not been going as often as I'd like to and I was well overdue to visit my colleagues there when I rolled into town earlier this week. Maybe they'd missed me just a little bit because they decided we should go out for dinner - a nice dinner - this time. I'd spent the previous evening burning the roof of my mouth on a rather unpleasant cheese pizza in the hotel bar, so I was definitely in the mood to go out. The restaurant they chose was La Bodega on Plaza Molina in the Sant Gervasi area of the city. This district lies to the north of the Diagonal so not really in a typical tourist area. Include the Peter Arnold winery in your Spanish travels

Advantages: Delicious wines
Disadvantages: Need a car

...This super little boutique winery is tucked away in the Jalon Valley of the Alicante region of Spain and is well worth seeking out. Run by German-born Arnold and his English wife Helen, the Bodega del Garroferal is a tiny, relatively new winery which grows the grapes just across the road from the bodega and, after handpicking, ferments them in open topped tanks. Although grapes have been grown in the region since Roman times, the bodega was only set up in 2002 when the Arnolds relocated to Spain from South Africa where they were involved in wine growing. They offer a small range of delicious wines - three reds, three whites and one rose. My favourite was Rhapsody, a cabernet sauvignon/merlot blend with depth and complexity. The wines are not currently available outside Spain so if you are on tour, make sure you bring some home...

Review of Bodega Hotel, Hanoi

Refined urbanity

Advantages: The smoothest album you'll ever hear
Disadvantages: None!

...This can be summed up with a few well-chosen words: smooth, suave, sophisticated, polished, the album is all of these and much more. Singer Huey's gravelly voice complements the laid-back nature of the tracks perfectly, and the musicianship is immaculate. The singles chosen from this album perhaps didn't really do justice to it, in terms of giving the wrong impression: certainly 'Korean Bodega' is one of the most mainstream-sounding tracks on it, and this band isn't about mainstream at all. Taken in the context of the album the track works well but as a single it fails to give the real sense of the album: mean New York streets, shady deals, that sort of thing - which is what this album is all about. If you like Come Find Yourself then you'll love this, a natural progression from that album's more raw sounds. Here's to the next release!...

...Fun Lovin' Criminals, 100% Columbian The American trio are not liked nearly as much in the states as they are here in good old blighty, and I have no Idea why. This album is sheer quality from start to finish. Sublime lyrics, great rock riffs and some rocking drum beats to get your granny dancing in the moonlight. This is a wonderful album and with Christmas just around the corner it is time to pop down to your local HMV and slap this down on the counter, alongside your flexible friend. ...customer (Alfred Hitchcock in his customary cameo role) being pulled along by a pair of terriers (Hitchcock's own dogs Geoffrey and Stanley) A chance meeting with solicitor Mitch Brenner (portrayed by Rod Taylor) in this shop, where he pretends not to know her (the part she is playing is a 60's Paris Hilton type character) leaves her eager play a trick on him. She orders two lovebirds and sets out to deliver them to the coastal town of Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends the weekends with his young sister and mother (Jessica Tandy). Shortly after she arrives, Melanie is attacked by a gull, but this is just the start of a series of attacks by an increasing number of birds. The way that Hitchcock keeps the viewer engrossed with playful little hints even though the first real attack doesn't come until around the film's halfway point is wonderful...

Fear of Flying

Advantages: Suspenseful, Scary, Superb Acting, Hitchcock

...The Birds (1963) was Alfred Hitchcock's first film for Universal Pictures, and it's my personal favourite of all the master's movies. I remember first watching it as a child and being absolutely terrified. I honestly don't know if it's related or not, but as an adult I have a bad phobia of birds, and I'm often to be found screaming at pigeons in city centres. Nevertheless, I still watch this movie periodically and - either because or in spite of my irrational fear - find it as creepy, suspenseful and scary as ever. THE PLOT: The Birds is loosely based on a collection of short stories by Daphne du Maurier, in which the English countryside is terrorized by violent, frenzied birds. If Carlsberg did hotels....

Advantages: Great price, free mini-bar, good service, free footie!
Disadvantages: some distance from the centre

..., we didn't like the idea of people getting out of the lift and admiring our dinner, so we didn't opt to eat in the hotel. Also, it's in a fairly residential area quite a walk from the bodegas and old town of Jerez. We did work out a route which took about 20 minutes. This is more direct than the bus route which doesn't take you through the nicest areas of Jerez. It is a little quicker though and costs less than 1 Euro. There is a Champion hypermarket 10 minutes walk from the hotel which is handy for supplies and the Gonzalez Byass Bodega provide free delivery of your sherry to your hotel if you spend enough! (20 Euros,I think) The hotel has an underground car park (which you pay for) and a free car park in front of the hotel which is barrier-controlled. This hotel was the cheapest of our holiday and excellent value for money...

Review of AC Hotel Jerez

An Ordinary Arora...

Advantages: Convenient Gatwick Parking
Disadvantages: Pretty Poor For a 4 Star Hotel...

...with Multimap & PowerPoint. We eventually found a delightful little restaurant in Crawley, although it wasn't mentioned on the Arora's map. In any case, I can heartily recommend the La Bodega tapas bar on the Crawley High Street. Great atmosphere, excellent value, and some of the best tapas I've had anywhere. We had an early start the following morning & the hotel's shuttle-bus to the airport ran on time. The trip to Gatwick took 10 minutes at most. Upon our return to the UK there wasn't a shuttle available, so the hotel dispatched a taxi, which arrived promptly & took us directly to our car. This seems a fairly good point to conclude on. It is by no means the worst place I have ever stayed at, but I probably wouldn't recommend the Arora as a hotel per se, and am slightly incredulous at its 4 stars.
